The market right now for a "younger" RT is probably what Derek Newton signed for:
5-Year, $26.5M Deal With $10M guaranteed.

Anyone feel like marrying Parnell like that?

Not really that far off if you add two years to Free's deal. It would be 5-year, $25 million with $10 million guaranteed.

That may be a big factor at the end of the day. Free is a better player (at the moment) and is the team leader, but Parnell may very well get a bigger contract soon.

I'm not sure how much of a factor it was. Dallas has shown a preference for Free (because he is the better player at the moment) so I think he was higher on the list than Parnell, even though Parnell has age/wear and tear advantage.

....I'm probably late to the party on this. Oh well, was busy with other things today. Glad we re upped him or not? I think it's good, because I suspect Parnell is on his way to DC after the way Callahan talked about him. I will say that Doug is solid and well respected in our locker room BUT his injury history concerns me greatly. Surprised they gave him six mil guaranteed. I think we should look for another young tackle to develop in the mid rounds OR sign a solid FA at that position as insurance.

And really that's how it is with any player.

But much more so with Free. Martin, Smith and Fred are a fraction of the injury concern you have with Free. Leadership or not, he missed 40% of the team starts last season.

Only 6M guaranteed is great news. Enough to get a deal done but not so much that Free could become complacent (IE 2012 season)

This was my appreciation for the contract too in that it gives them many outs going forward. Hell, the team could still draft a Tackle in top 3 if BPA is held to standard even with this hole covered for the time being. Great swing tackle, take over next year, etc. I like the signing bc believe Parnell will end up fetching more. Parnell's major hindrance is that he just started football too late and didn't know how to manage that immense strength with the more complicated aspects to playing tackle; assignments being changed on the fly, pass rush angles, lunging, etc.

Great job FO!

think Free was a "must sign". This deal is good for both sides. I think it also sets us up to potentially target a OT in the draft if there's a good one that falls to us, as drafting one this year would mean the guy sits for a year as a quality backup and if he's good enough in year 2, he takes over as a starter.
Certainly if not this year, next year RT will be a draft priority.

Or maybe Parnell wanted more money. It will be interesting to see who signs for more: Free or Parnell.

Doug Free: 3 years, $15M, $6M guaranteed.

Jermey Parnell: 5 years, $32M, $13M guaranteed offer expected from Jacksonville.

The Jaguars are betting on Parnell's upside and I'm happy to see him get paid while not going to a division rival.

Depending on how free agency shakes out, Parnell currently qualifies the Cowboys to get a 4th round compensatory selection in 2016.
