Adrian Peterson threatening retirement

If you mean they have backed themselves into paying 13m for a 30 yr old RB they tried to walk away from last year, yeah they won.

Next thing you know they will guarantee next year's 15m deal to really stick it to him.

What does that have to do with anything?

The Vikings wanted Adrian Peterson back. They could have easily cut him if they didn't want to pay him, but they didn't.

It's the same reason why Dallas fans were clamoring for AP - they see he still has something left in the tank.

So tell me what leverage AP had?

The only leverage he had was to sit out for the season, forcing the Vikings to do something. But we knew he wasn't going to do that.

Again, the Vikings had all the leverage. AP had none, or wasn't willing to exercise the only leverage he had, giving up $13 million in the process.

He aint THAT stupid.

And he wanted to get his workout bonus.

All that shows to demonstrate is what people have failed to recognize around here.

It was about money. He wants more guaranteed money.

It was never ever about "he wants to be a Cowboy!".

I think he did want out. When he saw he couldn't get out, he was trying to force the Vikings to guarantee his contract, thinking that would loosen their hold on him.

I don't know what he was thinking. He wasn't going to utilize the only leverage he had, which was to sit the season. So when he started changing his tune, the Vikings knew they had him.

And then AP, like the Prodigal Son, came to his senses. $13 million will do that for you. ;)

No one should believe that MINN's plan all along was to bring back Peterson at 13m.

They wanted to reserve the right to keep him, but they also wanted to see if the suspension trouble still posed a PR problem.

They wanted to trade him when it became apparent he wanted out. That obviously didn't work out.

So they are left with paying him 13m, well North of any other RB. They can try to sell it as some kind of hardball win, but in reality they were painted into a corner and played it the best they could. It still isn't over as OTAs in June is a long way from a happy team and player in Sept.

I am still convinced there is a serious divide in the MINN FO and coaching staff about whether to bring him back or not. Coming back to MINN was not Peterson's first choice, but getting 13m is a great consolation prize.

That is your take, I'm sure Minn could have moved him for a 3rd rd pick if they wanted to but they said from the get go they wanted him, they have not changed that stance one bit. Only AP side has changed their tune, wanted out, really wanted guaranteed now he was not sure what he wanted and loves his teammates and coaches. Minn made no move to draft a RB or bring in any RB, to me that tells me they had their RB and unless someone is willing to give up a lot he will remain in Minn

They already had McKinnon and Asiata so they didn't to draft anyone.

Peterson showing up at OTAs in June to collect 250k is a long way from a full resolution.

Do you think Dez is all but signed since he showed up last week?

I think Dez situation is completely different. As for Minn they have said from the get go they are not getting rid of AP they plan on keeping him. They did leave the door open to anyone willing to give them a kings ransom for him. If Minn wanted to move him they could have done so. Cap wise they are in good shape even with AP contract. Bottom line they are not trading him, Dallas is not getting him. AP will play in Minn period. People are reaching like crazy but the Vikes as I said have not changed their stance 1 single bit. They are not giving AP any guaranteed money because they don't have to they paid him already. He pouted but he is not going to walk away from 13 mill dollar contract, that would be stupid on his part. Ranked as the 28 leading RB of all time, he is not a shoe in for the HOF to reach that goal, AP can't afford to go half hearted into this season so I fully expect him to play to his best ability

Obviously our takes are polar opposites.

I have never felt that MINN actually wanted him back, at least some high ranking execs.

They have said the right things, but words are free.

It may be over, but I doubt Peterson is actually content.

words are free and action speak louder, they said they want him and where is he? They are not shopping him around. So how are their words not being backup by their actions? Only one changing their tune is AP his actions and words do not match. Oh I'm going to retire? BS he is so full of it, he is not retiring and he has no clout whatso ever to force Minn to do anything. They want him and he is there and it is costing Minn nothing more than they were willing to pay

Their words would be backed by restructuring his deal to give him more of his salary up front. Failing to do so shows a lack of commitment or 'empty words'.

BUFF did this when McCoy was traded for Alonso and expressed his anger. BUFF's gesture shut up McCoy instantly.

And Peterson actually gets an additional 250k for showing up to these OTAs. So that might explain his attendence more than anything else.

why they paid him and he can't go anywhere, why would they now then turn around and guarantee him more money putting the organization on the hook when fact is they don't have to. They own his rights. He loved the deal when he got it and is still the highest paid RB in the NFL.
AP has no choice, he can retire or he can play. If he retires any hope of HOF are out the window. Meantime if someone want to offer Minn a large package deal to get AP I'm sure they will listen, any team would. The 250K in NFL terms is chump change.

Not cutting or trading AP backs up there words. They said they want him in 2015. At this time they being true to their words by maintaining the agreed upon deal. They do not have to change the contract to show commitment.

I don't make the rules. Re-doing contracts is how it is done in the NFL.

DAL didn't have to do anything with OScan but they did anyways, to appease a star player.

Jay Ratliff and Desean Jackson also showed what a disgruntled star can do a team and locker room.

Yes Dallas choose to then again Scandrick is not the highest paid CB in the NFL. AP is getting paid, Minn does not need to hand over any more than they have. He is under contract to Minn. He has a choice sit or play and Minn is not budging and they do not have to. They have said they are keeping him this year< could that chance next year? or the year after sure it could that is their choice.

AP want to play halfhearted fine his chance at the HOF will go down the tubes, he is not a shoe in for the Hall he will still have to put up some big numbers to ensure himself a spot. That is on him

They didn't have to, but treating their players right, especially the stars, can help out later.

Playing hardball like the Bidwells of the league can hurt recruiting and retaining players.

We got Collins in large part because of JJones' reputation of treating his players well and being a man of his word.

was it treating him right to give him a 36 mill gaurnteed deal? that was for 6 years not 3, you don't get to turn around and say well that was great but now I want more. For what 1,266 yard in 2013? Missing the entire 2014 season? for turning 30 years old? Minn would be off their friken rockers to turn around and pay out more up front money.

Peterson deserved that contract. MINN wasn't handing out charity. Superstars get paid big bucks. That doesn't mean MINN never has to step up again.

They wanted the best RB and paid top dollar for him. Beside tearing his ACL he has lived up to his deal. And he worked his tail off to get back as soon as possible and better than ever.

If they would have stood by him last year he would have missed 2 games tops and earned most of his money. Instead they helped trick him onto the Commissioner's List so they could wash their hands of the situation. Peterson felt betrayed by the team and those feelings are real.

He got a contract and Minn has paid that contract and will pay out another 13 mill this year. Once the season is underway that 13 mill belongs to him no matter what.
AP got himself in hot water you want blame someone start with him and his own personal responsibility. You are right Minn is not handing out charity, they paid him the largest contract ever paid to an NFL RB

And he has provided 12,000 yards and 91 TDs
