Help me understand why Garrett survives this season. If Payton is available/former Superbowl coach with history of coaching Romo, why not? More proven coaching resume than the clapper... Serious question.

Because Payton will demand 5+ mill a year and Jerry won't pay that.

Especially after he just gave Garrett a new deal.

We are stuck with this clown unfortunately.

He survives because the Jones family is too invested in Garrett. It goes back years to when Jones overpaid Garrett just to keep him as the team's OC when other teams were sniffing around him.

They will use Romo being out as an excuse and we'll continue into another offseason with the Clapper as our head coach.

The Jones family will not make a change until it's clearly obvious. And at this point, to them, it's not obvious at all.

Why would that matter? It doesn't count against the cap.

How well would Payton do with Weeden and Cassel?

Coaching changes mean starting over. Starting over means that you probably waste another two seasons of Tony's career.

Garrett isn't going anywhere people. Move on.

I don't think that's true at all if you hire the right guy.

By keeping Garrett, they are absolutely wasting Romo's last few good years.

Every team has issues. But Romo out is the sort of problem that means you can't overcome those other issues

Romo being out is a huge issue. No doubt. But there are issues with this team that I think would be a stretch to blame on Romo's absence.

It will take losing 3 or more of the last 7 with Romo playing for them to even consider firing Garrett. Or a situation where it's evident that he's lost the team,a lot of grumbling from within the lockeroom, etc. The same could be said if they had any other owner. So it's not just a Jones thing. No team is going to fire a coach coming off a 12-4 season, when you can point to injuries being such a big factor.
Let's face it. If they go on to win 5 or 6 out of the next 7 it would be clearly obvious that had Romo played. We'd have ended up being 11-5 or better. So it would be hard to make a reasonable case for firing Garrett. If they lose 3 or more. Then firing Garrett would be a fair argument.
Stephen seems to be more in charge now days. And he seems to be pretty cool headed and logical about things when making decisions. So I'm sure he'll let the rest of the season play out before deciding to hire or fire anyone. Which is exactly what he should do.

I don't but it. Wade came here and went 13-3 his first season, and coaches have that great year a lot in the first season, Atlanta is doing that this year, Kubiak, etc. It's time!

It is absolutely true. A new coach means a new scheme, it means a new coaching staff, it means personnel changes, it also probably means change in the management and in the scouting staff. Payton is not Garrett or Wade or any number of other coaches. Payton has skins on the wall and I do not believe that he would be a yes man coach who just goes along with whatever Jerry says. He doesn't have to. He will have options.
