“I don’t anticipate anything major [adjustment-wise],” Linehan said, via the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. “Obviously, we’re working to improve in some areas wefell short, so we’ll do that here in the upcoming months. We really have to get ourselves back to where we really started and where we were in training camp. I think we have to start by everyone looking in the mirror and saying, ‘This is what we’ve got to do individually. Then collectively as a group, and then as a team.’ So it’s pretty cut and dry that way.”

There’s not much question that better health would make a world of difference for the Dallas offense, although 2015’s results also illustrated the need to upgrade the overall depth of the unit because no one can guarantee that Romo, Bryant or anyone else will be in the lineup for 16 games the next time around.

So basically still the old must beat your man on every play offensive system. Looks like we're still going to play the old must have elite people across the board or the offense will sputter unless Romo magic can save it every now and again. Then hope Romo can stay healthy.

For those advocating defense with our top #4 pick, please note the offensive system we are keeping. If we don't go for the future with a QB, we need to at least get more elite offensive skill position talent and still, at that, cross our fingers on Romo's health.

So, that elite "beat you man mantra" doesn't apply to the #4 pick? He's good enough to overcome this putrid scheme? That's laughable

At least a QB drafted #4 overall has a chance to be elite enough to function in his offense given time ( or hopefully another HC if Garrett keeps flopping down enough even Jerry concedes we need to move on ). At least that QB would offer hope, unlike a QB drafted in the late rounds or a scrap heap vet QB in FA would.

Or are you advocating not getting a QB/Offense early so we'll continue to be mediocre/awful whenever Romo gets hurt again or starts to just decline so Garrett WILL get fired? If so, that's not a bad thought - except it might take Jerry another 4-8 years of Garrett before he does it regardless of the results anyway.

We poured quite a few resources into defense last year and it got us a heaping cup of jack squat because mainly one reason (Romo out). Dez and Scrandrick lost hurt some but even with them we would not have done anything this year because we lost our QB. So yeah, I'm for drafting a QB at #4 so our future might have a good enough QB to be elite enough to function in a Garrett offense. If the Cowboys just will not do that because they believe Romo will remain healthy from now on, then at least give him more elite weapons on offense to keep one side of the ball filled with players who have a chance to beat their opponents man to man. Defense is still in sponge mode - sopping up resources left and right with little effect. Especially since the biggest effect would probably be at 1 tech which the don't feel is important.

Enough of my stream of consciousness rambling - just take a QB at #4 Jerry.

Which offense does not require you to beat your man?

Linehan's game plan going into 2016: cross his fingers and pray Romo stays healthy.

It's pretty clear no one on our coaching staff is capable of coaching players up or coming up with a game plan to beat the opposing D coordinator so it's going to once again come down to how many games can Romo win us despite them.

What are these things called "adjustments"?

The off season quotes from Jerry on down just reek of the same old sticking your head in the sand philosophy that has hindered this franchise for 20 years.

I didn't say that it did not. In fact the #4 pick SHOULD be good enough to beat his own man, whether offense or defense. With Romo or with another elite or near-elite QB in the future, our offense can transcend the limitations put on it through Red's offense -without them it falls flat on it's face and dooms the whole season. No one defensive player does that at any position. That's why I want QB at #4. If the QB can't "beat his man" in Garrett's offense, the whole team is doomed. You MUST have an elite/near elite QB to function AT ALL. No one position on defense means so much. If you can't understand that or refuse to, then I can't help you.

In case I'm the one not understanding properly and you mean ALL offenses must beat their own man and ours is nothing unique?

If that's what you are talking about - then to an extent you are correct. But there are wrinkles, matchups and other tricks other teams use to help out their offenses that we seem way too reluctant or not imaginative to try. Seems like plain vanilla is our coaches favorite ice cream. Not expecting that to change, so while other teams have hope for victory if their QB can't beat their counterpart, we do not.

Both our O and D are so boring, must be the least fun offense to watch and without Romo it's nails on the chalk board bad.

2014 - 29.2 ppg/383.6 ypg
2015 - 17.2 ppg/335 ypg

When everybody is healthy, everything was fine. When folks got hurt, it wasn't. Not too complicated. Even the ground game was still ok without Romo (only 4 games under 100 yards).

sure there are wrinkles you can put in and things you can do. I also agree you need a good QB one that makes defense have to honor you not a situation where the defense goes in saying your QB will have to beat us because we don't think he can and they will lock down on running attack which I feel teams did because our QB were inaccurate and hesitant. Heck Dallas has gone into games in the past with Philly knowing if we shut down McCoy that we would win because their QB were not that good.

Because we had an elite or darn near elite QB in Romo running it in 2014. Last year proved our offense can't function without one. That's why I'm so gung-ho to draft QB at #4. It at least gives us a chance with this offense in the future after Romo is done. If we go the scraps route ( mid or low level draft pick or average at best FA vet ), our offense will flop and I doubt our defense will ever get good enough to compensate for it. Don't think we'll ever become the 85 bears on defense no matter how many resources we throw at it.

Now maybe some are right and no QB coming out this year will ever turn out to be elite or even come close to that. But nobody knows that right now and the big 3 ( Goff, Wentz, and Lynch ) at least offer various levels of hope and potential to do so. Any other is a pipe dream/fools chance at best.

It doesn't matter what scheme Wentz is in. He'll excel in them all. Probably from the first game of his rookie year.

Supporting cast doesn't matter either. Just give him a field, a football and 10 other schmucks. Grab a seat. Film it for the grandkids.
