What happened to great music?

Back in the days before pro tools and auto tune when bands and musicianship were tighter than a drum, and the songwriting /composition was stellar.

Am I old and cranky or was the older stuff just all around better? Or am I just not looking in the right place?
 
you mean like a fan talk forum vs. off topic? :)

since this is going to get moved, my answer is rock in itself is pretty sick. you just don't hear new rock at the rate we used to. it does make me wonder what will happen in 10-15 years when "classic rock stations" play the crap out of things that generation grew up with.

Scary isn't it........I can imagine 20 years from now.....on radio station Ksuxx, we play all the greatest hits by Foster the People, Mumford and Sons and the Black Keys as well as Fallout Boy.

i LOOK for rock stations these days and really can't find near the options we used to have. most are "classic rock" and a few will sprinkle in some otherwise, disturbed and so forth for new music but it simply is not coming out nearly as fast as it did through the 90s and into the 2000's. even on sat radio you only have a few options and OCTANE is the closest, but still nothing i want to hear 24x7.

so when you can't find one, become one. :) working on that still and loving the music we find to play.
 
R&B, Rap and New Country

I think old country was starting to wain a little there for a while. Not saying the old country style stations every went away, I just think it was not as popular there for a bit. But new country came along and it has gathered a pretty good following. To me some of the new country sounds a little like old rock a billy. I know at one time you would never have heard of a rock musician becoming country but now you have as it has picked up.

R&B is still going strong as it was.

Rap...at one time people scoffed at it and said it was just a fad....well it has lasted and It doesn't matter if people like it or not, it is not a fad like disco was.

So There might not be as much rock stations out there...but there are more of the other. My neck of the woods you have a variety of Country stations (old and new). Some RB that mix some rap and dance and of the Rock stations....most are Classic mixed with a few of todays bands.
 
Music is so crappy today that I've had to change genres. I'm a rock guy who listens to more bluegrass like Old Crow Medicine Show, The Steedrivers, and The Devil Makes Three than rock these days. The closest I can get on a descent current rock band is The Black Keys.

And just because you saw some teenager wearing an ac/dc shirt at Walmart doesn't mean they like them.
 
When you get an hour and a half, click on some of this and restore your faith in some straight up rock and roll. A little of southern flavor but these boys straight up rock!

 
There is GREAT music in nearly every single genre out there if you dig deep. Some are full of great music in mainstream and underground, while some genres are still producing great music from the indie scene.

Folk music right now is peaking, in my personal opinion. Bon Iver's sophomore album in 2011 is one of the best folk albums I've ever heard. Post-rock is still going strong, Swan's "The Seer" garnered universal acclaim and is a modern classic. Hip-hop just had a juggernaut rise from the underground in Death Grips, a group that took hip-hop and fused it with an industrial sound and punk messages.

Great music is still out there, more than ever actually.

Those are some great songs posted and agree with your general sentiment even while liking the new stuff as well. I think the major difference bw the two eras is that the passion/meaning of songs took a turn into meaning something different and some could argue less meaningful based on whatever content/taste/background, due to simple personal preference, etc.. The investment and effort by the artists/bands are undeniably more present in older music than the current gen (in all genres); and just not solely due to better/accessible technology.

This is unfortunately true and a part of life no matter what genre you like. Having said that, we all know we're right and they just don't get it!:D

Look no further than when they hire acts for a big event or charity concert. They don't look to these here today and gone tomorrow acts, they bring in the big guns, the legends.

Heyyyyyy lol

I remember my parents driving us kids around in the 70s and I was 6-7 years old.

These songs and other 50s, 60s and 70s songs are instilled in my being.

So.... I have been listening to these songs as a teenager. It's not always "old as dirt"
