Yeah T Rock should've had better success (promotion) and is among a long list of former 36 members due to DJ Paul either bc tries to f em over, or their talent is a threat to his ego, etc. Esp talents like Koopsta and T Rock. DJ Paul is known to rip a lot of artists off tbh; T Rock, Gangsta Boo, Lord Infamous, Koopsta Knicca, Playa Fly (that other Memphis rapper you said you liked...smoother), La Chat, and the list I'm sure goes on and on. I support Project Pat a hell of a lot more than modern 36. Old 36 is just in my blood bc of the nostalgia effect (and did have some sick tracks).

I've went through a bunch of periods of contemplating the GOAT. Honestly, I didn't realize who I thought the GOAT was (Black Thought) until I stopped trying to find one. I admit, I haven't followed hip hop (music at all) much since my early 20s (I'm 30 now). There was a period I thought Jay-Z was based on Reasonable Doubt and some early material, but so much of his music and his rhymes just haven't done it for me in about 15 years. On talent and originality alone, I could've made a strong argument that Eminem was after his first two albums and some of Eminem Show, but his music and how he rhymes just have turned me off the past 10+ years. Biggie is excellent but I don't know if he has the catalog that other rappers have, plus he died before we got a chance to see if his flow could evolve and adapt to the modern days. I wouldn't say the same about Pac. He has a lot of material and his flow and voice were ahead of their time. My only knock would be a lot of his music didn't do it for me and I hated that he featured 5 rappers on every song. But I don't think I've ever heard a bad Pac verse. Then there are guys who had so much talent but never broke through and died before their time, like Big L (and Pun, you could say, but I'm not a huge Pun fan). I guess if I had to go the traditional route, I'd say Nas. He always stayed true to himself, he evolved and adapted over the years, he has decades worth of material, and he's one of the greatest lyricists of all time.

All that being said, Black Thought has been the GOAT for me for a few years now and I just can't see that changing. Not only has his flow adapted throughout the years, but everything about him is still ahead of its time. Guys like Rakim have dropped albums years after they first came out and they still sounded outdated. They sounded like they were trying to sound current. Black Thought just evolves at a rate beyond anyone else. Everything about him is top notch I think: his voice is up there with Pac's, rhymes up there with Nas, flow up there with Jay/Em/Big. I can see why people wouldn't consider him the GOAT. He never had a solo album. He's part of a "band". And many young cats probably don't know him as anything more than the guy on the Jimmy Fallon show. To me, Black Thought is like the Louis CK of rap. He's your favorite rapper's favorite rapper.

Great post! I agree that Pac is one of the greatest and had better sample size to prove his obvious talent; he wrote like a fiend. Biggie never did have a chance to show if he could evolve/incorporate so you got a point there. The one thing that bothered me about Pac (not to the point of not listening obv.) was that his flow always made him sound like he was out of breath; if that makes any sense Black Thought should definitely release a solo rap album and get away from what people associate the Roots (Conan/Social Media)

Really Big?? Even Lord Infamous?? They're brothers. Why would he do that to his own brother? Well, I sure hope they settled their differences before Ricky died. Makes me sad. I had no idea DJ Paul was like that.

Juicy J and Project Pat are half brothers. But no relations otherwise within the group. But you're VERY correct in that Lord Infamous was part of the original Three Six Mafia group; ug tapes and all. DJ Paul sounds like the Memphis version of Suge Knight unfortunately as I hear interviews from former members. They were my favorite group growing up and it explains a lot of the hate sent 36's way by UG Memphis tbh (esp T Rock and Playa Fly). I was wrong and you're correct that Lord Infamous was DJ Paul's half brother as well. Feel a little ashamed I didn't know that tbh. I always knew of Juicy and Pat being related, but didn't know of the other half. So thanks for the schooling Kim
