Got rear ended. The guy had State Farm and filed a claim. Not a ton of damage, but my wife and I have pretty bad neck, shoulder and back pain. We went to the local First Choice ER and got X-rays. Everything looks good, but we're both extremely sore this morning. I'm going to call the claims adjuster today. Anyone have any insight? Not my first auto accident, but it's the first time I've been injured.

It's all about your morals and whether you try to sue knowing you're not really hurt.

That's the thing. I don't want any cash, but want to protect myself if the pain doesn't go away. The ER doctor said that there could be some soft tissue injuries that won't really come to light until a week or so. I just want my car fixed and medical bills paid for.

He rear ended you. Do what you need to do but exercise integrity.

He's at fault regardless. Let the insurance companies battle it out.

And DON'T pay any bills the hospital sends you.......the insurance companies will handle that as well.

Sticky situation, as well, since we both have State Farm.

Consumers. What's your point? We should help these companies save money?

Because maybe it help keep your auto insurance from going up?

Insurance may not be a complete "zero sum" game, but it's not far removed.

And when insurance companies get nicked, that cost eventually is born by their customers/clients.

To think the consumer isn't ultimately responsible for the bill is wrong.

Insurgence companies make billions of dollars annually by paying the least amount possible on claims. They'll charge the highest premiums they are able regardless to to make the most profit they can. I don't feel bad in the least if I were to take try and take the most amount of money from a claim just like they try to pay the least amount.

Wonder how that works?

You guys shake hands and call it a wash?

Good luck and take care of yourselves. Don't let things linger.

Of course you wouldn't feel bad.

It's understanding how all of this works combined with moral character.

He has to sue himself... He'll in turn get a big check and then his rates will go up. :D

I understand how it works. Your fooling yourself if you think for profit complies like this will lower your rates if their cost go down. The only reason they would do this is to obtain greater market share for economies of scale.

And if you want to talk about morality, I can give you some anecdotes about insurance companies totally screwing people based on technicalities. But morality does not apply to corporations, right? They're just maximizing their profit to comply with the fiduciary duty to their stockholders.

Morals? You're getting paid by the issuance company, not the people.

Has nothing to do about who pays. If you can sleep at night knowing you took money when you weren't hurt then bad for you. I couldn't. Now if he's hurt then he should get reimbursed for any medical bills. Of course his vehicle needs repaired regardless.

So just because a company is immoral that gives you the right to be immoral?

He already said he was hurt. I'm not talking about fraud here, but he should maximize the amount he gets paid without feeling guilty just as the insurance company minimizes the amount they pay off.
