What about Dak should really excite us

It's a single preseason game and his performance is likely meaningless. He will have ups and downs like any young quarterback. He may or may not have a longterm future as a backup much less a starter. (I'm one of those who thinks Tony has a longer career ahead than most think) However, Dak 's performance is exciting because we have a better chance today than yesterday of preserving resources.

By resources, I mean: cap money, draft picks, QB reps, and roster spots. We have a real chance to create a virtuous cycle just like we started on the OLine with the drafting Tyron Smith and cleaning out the aging line. Dak's performance means the front office will be more willing to take a gamble with the backup QB position. That gamble can save us anywhere between 2-10 million on a veteran backup. That gamble allows us to use our limited reps to evaluate our draft pick. It keeps us from throwing 5th round picks for a security blanket. It allows us to use both the 2nd and 3rd roster spots on long term QB development prospects (Showers or someone in next years draft) It lets us have a lot more information before we sacrifice multiple drafts like LA and Philly on a 1st round projection. Finally, if Dak or a future draft pick is a long term starter, it gives us time to develop him in our system.

All of these things require us to gamble on a young quarterback. In this risk averse league, this may give the team enough confidence rightly or wrongly to gamble on youth and this gamble no matter how the player turns out can start a virtuous cycle. We all are focused on a win now window but making long term gambles is how you create a competitive program, year after year.

In order:

1. He has the poise and gonads to stand in the pocket and deliver the ball downfield.

2. He is following Romo around soaking up mind vitamins. Eager to learn.

3. Natural leader. Can't teach it. Like Romo.

4. Has the physical tools to work with, including mobility.

5. Looks like he wants to throw first, run second.

Maybe we found our Aaron Rodgers to sit for three years, learn, then take over.

I think what should also excite us about having Dak Prescott is that we can start allocating those high picks elsewhere if he pans out. We can finally start getting that defense shored up or even pair Dez with another top notch receiver.

I honestly didn't know how quick of a release he had. Accurate too. Romo helps a lot too.

Absolutely. If the team has secured it's future franchise QB while the current franchise QB is still playing lights-out, and they accomplished this by spending a measly 4th round pick, the ramifications would reverberate through this franchise for over a decade. It would be a complete game changer.

It's so early, and of course ridiculously hasty to draw these kind of conclusions from 1 little preseason game. But still, this is the dream scenario that every Cowboy fan secretly harbors in his heart but never really believes will happen that we are looking square in the eyes of. It is beyond exciting.

I don't want to put the cart before the horse, but boy, how huge would it be if this kid pans out. We're all worried (rightfully so) about life after Romo (and honestly, all teams with a legit franchise QB who's in their mid to late 30's have similar worries), but if this kid can sit for a couple years and then slide in as starter, wow. How crazy would that be.

Can we go from UDFA franchise QB to 4th round draft pick franchise QB? I can't see the future but damn that would be awesome.

I do think both Dez and Tony are high on him.
Dez even mentioned the back shoulder throw that Romo has been showing him every day in practice. Said they were really proud and "he threw that one just like 9 does" every day.
Des said he knew he was a player and he's really lucky to have a great leader like Romo to follow.

Stay humble but confident, Dak.
Who knows where this can go:flagwave:

I like the way he handled the blitz. That's HUGE for a rookie because they thing that a rookie is going to see is the blitz and packages to get a defender in his face.
But I'm tempering my excitement because it aint going to be this easy for him.
Fortunately, he will have more time to sit and learn with a healthy Romo leading the way.
Win-win!

Excited, yes, chaps. First exhibition ... er ... preseason game, blokes. Would rugby be owed to the rough oaks of the Westbury fest?
I say not!
Rot, rot, rot I say.
The first preseason game, started by the perpetual golden boy Tony Romo, will have an NFL veteran backing him and not Dak or Hit The Showers

I see an NFL READY VET. COMPETENT OR NOT.

Sincerely

1. He doesn't make the game more complicated than it should be

2. Every pre snap isn't a fire drill

3. He has an aura about him that his teammates will believe in and follow

4. He threw a deep ball right on the money

5

He already manages the game better than Romo. If he looks good vs Miami and Seattle, I would start him opening day. In modern NFL, if a guy has it he has it. The days of he needs time learning are over.
