If you take the best player available, and that turns out to be a qb, then that's great, but need has to also line up with opportunity. Otherwise you end up drafting a QB and gaining nothing.
Who is to say that the Cowboys have been neglecting anything? We wanted and needed a running back last year, and didn't take one in the draft. The problem was that need didn't line up with available talent so we passed on several running backs, in part, because a better player was on the board at another position when we picked.
It would be nice if we are perceived to not need another QB because of Romo and Dak, and have a can't miss QB prospect fall in our laps, and we take him. Acquiring overall talent generally means more wins over time.
I disagree with you assessment. Dallas was stubborn about not drafting a running back last year and passed up opportunity after opportunity in a running back deep draft. If the team had done what was logical, it likely could have spent that early first-round pick this year on another position of need.
They neglected it and cycled through running backs last year because of it, being fortunate that McFadden didn't end up following his injury history.
Was Gregory with his drug history a better pick than Tevin Coleman would have been? Or David Johnson? We went for the risk rather than taking advantage of the depth of the RB class.
The draft is equal parts drafting the best player available and picking the player who best fits your needs. Dallas didn't draft Prescott because he was the better than any other player available at that point this year. The team took him because it was set on drafting a QB and his value equaled the range of the pick.
If they go into the 2016 draft with the same plan, then at some point, the value and the position will line up. If your mind-set is we're going to take a QB in this draft, then that desire and the value will match at some point. In the past, it hasn't been Dallas mind-set to get a QB,
In 2014, if it had been, then maybe we have Derek Carr in the fold. Now, I'm happy to have DeMarcus Lawrence, but there would have been nothing wrong with Dallas having a QB mind-set there and taking advantage of that opportunity (and who knows how 2015 would have turned out if they had). Or maybe if we had had a QB mind-set we end up with AJ McCarron instead of Devin Street in that draft.
In other words, there is always opportunity, but the team has to be oriented to take advantage of it.
