Rico Gathers

From the fourth quarter at 12:09 left is when I think he gets in the game for his first snap. Take a look at the link.

Calling it after a few weeks? What is wrong with you?

really what is wrong with you what has he shown to say anything else. the first two preseason games the backups and players fighting for rosters spots play alot Gathers has done squat...

I agree that he has always been viewed by the Dallas coaches as a project and a PS guy. He really does need to learn the position. He will not be utilized much in the preseason. I think it will be until next year for us to see what kind of player he is. Hopefully he learns from Witten what it takes to be a great TE in the NFL.

He was drafted as a project. Projects take time. If you quit a few weeks into a project that was known to take years, you accomplish nothing. I can't imagine what your expectations much have been.

Rico Gathers – I honestly thought the coaches would give Gathers a few more opportunities after they barely utilized him in Los Angeles. That didn’t prove to be the case, as the rookie only appeared in a handful of snaps and didn’t register a reception for the second-straight game. Gathers did have an opportunity to throw some blocks in the running game, and he appeared to do a decent job sealing the edge for Darius Jackson on a couple of runs to his side of the formation. It was still hard to make much of a judgment on this appearance, and it’s hard to imagine Gathers will play much in the “dress rehearsal” game. He’s going to need to make the most of the opportunity he gets in the preseason finale in two more weeks.
Looks to me like they like his potential but don't think he will be ready to make the roster so they are not giving other teams film on him so that he will be easier to get on the PS.

He's not getting any touches right now. My tin foil hat self thinks they're hiding his athletic ability so they can sneak him on the practice squad. My realistic side says no other team is interested in a guy that's just learning how to play TE at the professional level.

The coaching staff had to know he was this raw, so if they weren't willing to give him time to develop on the PS, why draft him?
Some people learn faster than others and you can't measure heart, you have to see that for yourself. He just looks too lost.

Anytime I got to see him on training camp live I always cringed at how raw he really is.

The guy is a longterm project... Just forget about him and hope that maybe we have something 2 years from now.

I saw garrett spending some time with him showing him some stuff during warmups last night. Looked like he was showing him how to turn his hips and go after catching the ball.

Seems like a practice squad guy that you hope can make a big leap into next summer.
If,at this level, he's being schooled on hip movement....he ain't making the practice squad. Lost cause......IMO.

I can almost guarantee you he makes it easily onto our PS if we wish to keep him.

I focused on him blocking on a couple of second half runs and his technique was all wrong. It looked like he was trying to turn and seal his man without using his arms enough. Obviously wasn't very effective. I was hoping a dude his size might have some natural blocking instincts, but he's a total project.

I saw same thing....he couldn't properly extend his arms or doesn't have strength to keep them extended while engaged. He is just so raw who ever he plays for will have to be very patient.

Maybe with a year of NFL strength and conditioning and coaching they'll start molding this big piece of clay they got. I'd put him on the PS and hope he develops. If someone claims him, oh well...

Sure but does anyone really think we drafted him for 2016?

I expect there were discussions with his agent about being on the PS for the year pretty early on

I think they drafted him because they assumed some other team was going to take a gamble on talent before he got to UDFA. I could see the Hanna injury open a spot of him for a few weeks to get him into the season and be more likely to clear waivers to get to the PS.

I think they could have used the pick better, and signed him as a FA. Sometimes, more than not, this team out think themselves by trying to think they outsmarted all the other teams with these late round projects / injured picks. Even though they may have hit on one in Nzeocha. But still need to see more of course.
I look at Gathers the same way the took a chance on Efe Obada. But at least he was a FA when signed.
I hope Gathers will work out in a few years. But that is a ways off. Stick him on the PS and see how he develops.
