Rico Gathers

really what is wrong with you what has he shown to say anything else. the first two preseason games the backups and players fighting for rosters spots play alot Gathers has done squat...

As others have said, maybe the staff knew he was destined for the PS from day one. Did it or have it crossed your mind that they knew exactly where his skill set was when they drafted him? Some of you have said it looked like he couldn't extend his arms or was handled pretty easily. Having played both football and basketball and with a two sons that played both, I can assure you that it will take a year for his strength to be on the same level as some of his football peers. Give him a year on the PS and then let's see what we got.

I hope he makes it onto the practice squad. I would like to see how he looks a year from now. While he didn't play hs football his brother was one of the better players at Georgia Tech as a defensive end.

If he is serious and wants to be a professional player let him prove this on the practice squad and hopefully in a year from now he is ready to compete for a spot on the team.

Because you are guaranteed his rights.

You're guaranteed the rights of somebody who has next to no chance to play in the NFL.

I'd rather pay him $20k for a UDFA contract or get him a UDFA deal similar to the one that Leary got.

I'd much rather have the guaranteed rights to somebody that has a better chance of making it in this league.

They found out with Gates that other teams can outbid you and that raw athletes can excel in the nfl.

Again,

Gates was an All-State football player in high school.

Gaithers didn't even play HS football.

The most you can pay a UDFA is $20k unless you sign the player to a deal like Leary received. So, if they wanted Gaithers THAT badly, they could have done that and chances are...nobody is going to match that offer.

The issue is that Gaithers is simply not worth a 6th round pick. Even if 6th rounders don't make the NFL that often, he's simply below that value. They could have drafted a ST specialist or found some diamond in the rough that actually has a chance of making the team...even making the team this season.

He was drafted as a project. Projects take time. If you quit a few weeks into a project that was known to take years, you accomplish nothing. I can't imagine what your expectations much have been.
enough with the projects....dont waste a PS on this guy

The probability is low for any 6th round pick to become a starter.

Other players might have a better chance to be a backup and ST player as rookies, but with less potential upside.

I thought we were discussing Rico Gathers. I don't know this Gaithers.

This smells of the English dude DE from last year that had off the charts measurements. How did that work out?

A typical 6th rounder has less than a 5% chance of ever becoming a starter, and that's more need than not.

Ironically, TE's drafted in the 6th actually have the highest success rate of any position group, with around 25% of them reaching "starter" status for some length of time (starting half of career is the criteria they used). So, Dallas actually hedged pretty impressively here.

24 teams actually showed up for Gathers pro day. There was no guarantee he'd last to UDFA.

Efe Obada. They re-signed him to a futures contract in Jan and released him in March. That almost always means the player did something wrong. They can't fail on the field in March. He is with Atlanta now. Meanwhile some 6th round picks like Ken Bishop are not with an NFL team.

Most NFL players selected in the 6th round meet that description. The success rate after the 5th round is less than 10%. He has athletic tools.

I can understand why you are so invested in coaching from levels lower than the pro ranks and all but deify it but I believe that it is possible that he learn how to block, run routes, and the like without it. Difficult certainly but I am not going to discount it out of hand.
