Likely last year was the beginning of end. This was just a reminder of it. Age and injuries have been accumulating. Eventually they take a toll.

Romo has looked increasingly stiff since 2014. This is the 3rd DIFFERENT back injury that will have knocked him out since 2013.

Breaking a collarbone isn't that concerning but like you mentioned this is the 3rd different back injury he's had since 2013. He does look stiff you can see it when he runs out onto the field to start a series.

That's a valid point.

If he can't hurt that part of his back further and a shot before the game reduces the pain...

Well he could play.
I would like to see Romo back in the game as soon as is feasible if he is not in great danger of debilitating injury. The optimal situation would be for Dak to have a minimum of a year to sit and learn while being Romo's protege.
I shouldn't be, but I am astounded at the number of posters in this thread that seem tickled pink that Romo is likely out. Shame, shame, shame on them! As for me, I'll wait for more official word. If it happens that Dak is the starter for half or more of the season, then I'll root for him to succeed the same as I would for Tony. No matter the outcome, I'll always be proud of Romo and proud that he was my team's QB! The man has never done anything but be a model citizen off the field and give all he had for this team on the field. I hope those that are happy that he's down hold themselves to the same standards that they obviously like to hold others to. Long story short (I know...it's too late for that), some people simply make me sick to my stomach.

This doesn't look a dirty hit to me. Yes maybe it should have been flagged, but I don't believe it was malicious.

I agree, I don't think it was dirty. Romo chose to run instead of slide, so the rules of being a runner apply to him, period.

And thats the double standard its ok for a team cut or threaten to cut a player if he wont renegotiate but its not ok for a player to hold out or want to collect the agreed upon contract. He got payed for the games he was injured sure but he was injured because he played the game. Again though if he did stay as a back up I personally think it would be less about money and more about one more shot. Heck I think hes the type of guy thay would give some back anyways. But truth is the whole scenario is far fetched. I think its jumping the gun to talk about losing respect for the guy that fought so hard to earn it.

I'm not saying I've lost respect for him, but that I would of that cash grab came to pass.

He was paid to play football. If he can't do that, he's nit honoring his end of the contract either.

What you guys aren't understanding is its 4-6 weeks from today . NOT 4-6 weeks from week 1. That mean there's 2 weeks before the season and he'll likely miss 2-3 regular season games. He should be ready by the Bears Sunday night game.

We've seen two different estimates: 6-10 weeks and 4-6 weeks.

Even if it is 4-6 weeks, you have to assume with Tony's age and injury history that it will likely be 6 weeks.

When he was out last year with his shoulder injury he came at the end conservative end of the estimate and still wasn't fully healed -- and got knocked out for the year vs Carolina.

They only owe him for 2016 which is 8.5M salary.

Dead-money is not owed to him.

In 2017 they free up 5.1M in cap space without him on the team.

2017 cap hit:
Romo on the team - 24.7M
Romo cut - 19.6M

Is this for certain?

I understand how disheartening it is to see Tony in this same situation again, but, what's even more disheartening... is the lack of support everyone seems to have here for him now.

I get that everyone does want to see him on the field for us, but, in all actuality, can we not lose sight of what it is that really happened? Whether or not the case is that he is getting older and more fragile (while I do see this), the fact of that matter is, is that I'm pretty sure none of us have ever seen a specific hit like that...

Try having 250lbs of Cliff Avril jamming your back directly into the ground while sliding at full speed, and I'm pretty sure any normal being should have at least something wrong with their back. It's nearly a miracle it's not anything even more than a minor compression fracture.

For Christ's sake, people, he doesn't even need surgery on this injury, and it's completely unrelated to the previous injuries he's had.

While I do understand it's easy to see how this could be the beginning of the end - I don't like to see it that way.

For everyone who doubts Tony out there, I'd like to keep faith in our boy, knowing that he's one of toughest in the game and once he does come back (which he will), he's going to be better than ever. If there was never a fluke hit such as this, and he went through a full season this year and took us into the playoffs, we would all be saying he does most likely have another 3 years in him - And I still believe that to be true. Quit saying Romo's going to retire, because he's not.

As long he lets it heal properly, our O-line protects him as they should, and there aren't any mortifying, ridiculous plays that somehow take him out for the season again... We (He) will be fine.

I say Dak goes 3-3, Romo comes back, goes 7-3, and we win the NFC East to get back into the playoffs again above the Commanders at 9-7.

Have a little faith, people!

Go Cowboys.

Great post. For me id just rather see the guy move on with his life. Hes brought me alot of good times and has been a blast to watch. I loved Aikman too but Tony will probably be my favorite. I just liked the way he handles the crap and always kept fighting. Never blamed anyone but himself either. So I look at the beating his body has taken and think man save yourself brother theres life after football. Go be a husband and a father. Dont sacrifice your health to prove morons wrong, they will always be morons.

Several things occur.

1. The team treads water during what appears to be an easier portion of the schedule and Romo comes back when it starts to get interesting.
2. Dak gets playing time and begins his learning under fire.
3. The coaches game plan with Dak in mind and he has ALL the weapons.
4. The value of Zeke and Morris protects the new QB and defense.

or...

Tony doesn't come back quickly and the season is now a tutorial for Dak and a draft pick. And with Romo's salary, it will require the FO to build wisely instead of wild cat.
Tony does come back, and once again goes down and Dak is no longer a puppy.

We have youth on offense at almost every position but Free and Romo. So a solid off-season and draft and the defense could have teeth.

I hate losing Romo. But there will be a day when he no longer is the answer. That sucks, but that is life.

That day may have come sooner than we like. And don't misunderstand, I am in favor of Romo still having a career here.

But with the youth on this team, this quite possibly could be a blessing in disguise Because this team will still be young when Dak is fully ready.

If Romo played two to three more years Dak would be inheriting a team much longer in the teeth.

It's two separate injuries you can't really compare them. The doctor on 105.3 the fan said that he could play after 4 weeks with this injury. With a collar bone Romo missed less time than Rodgers did with same injury. Romo has become injury prone but he's actually a quick healer. We'll see what happens. I don't trust the national media's 6-10 weeks. I trust the DR and Cowboys media more , and they are saying 4-6.

Yep, but again, that fight that we've always loved so much about him is still in him - So with that, I don't think he's going to be going anywhere :)

Can't wait to see him get back on the field, and in accordance with what you're saying, I do pray to god he doesn't get injured again, because I feel the same way.

IMO Romo will play this year as part of a crappy 6 win season or something like that. He will come back next year too proclaiming what great shape he's in and Jerry and Stephen will blow more Romo smoke into fans. I don't think The Romo injury matters because I anticipated him getting hurt early in season.

Hoping Dak can start fast so there is at least a threat of the pass. Likely though, my cynicism tells me the defense will blow chunks and we will enjoy the hollow production of Zeke and Dez as bright spots to a wretched season.

I can't understand why anyone thinks Garrett's job is in jeopardy with or without Romo injured. He stays as long as Romo is on the roster. We are looking at this for another 2-3 years minimum I think and it makes me want to vomit.

I don't know why you'd trust them. Sure Romo could be back sooner but it doesn't mean he's totally healed. Same as last year. Dez came back early last year too and didn't look right either.

This is not how I envisioned the Romo era ending. It makes me sick to think he might not get a ring.

Bloke, how would he get a ring at his advanced age and being more fragile than an over-toasted bunuelo?
How are things on Planet Optimism?
Romo is lucky to get out with 2 career playoff wins and 40 mil. That figures out to about 20 million for each playoff win.
He is our Danny White but Romo is more prone to smile and has
10 fewer playoffs wins.
