Steven mostly talked about confidence in Dak, but he also said Tony is 100% working toward getting back on the field. He talked about Zeke's physical play in Seattle and said he thinks the pass rush is going to be much better than people expect. The much more interesting segment came afterward with Dr. David Chao who explained that the difference between Tony's transverse process injury and the compression fracture he just suffered is that the former was painful because he broke exterior bones connected to muscle and that the latter takes more healing because a compression fracture is structural damage at the core of the spine. Kirwan asked about what we've all been assuming: Romo is 36 with a wife and two kids and a whole lot of life ahead of him. He needs to be thinking about retirement, right? The doctor said no more than any other football player. He said Tony is 36, which may be old in football years but not in human years, so Tony is not fragile and doesn't have brittle bones. He said He'll be able to go back to practice in a red jersey in a few weeks. He just can't take hits until six weeks or so, which is the general minimum amount of time it takes human bones to heal. He mentioned though that David Carr had the same injury some years ago and he was back on the field a lot sooner than six weeks.
Thanks for this.

Does he know just how bad I expect our pass rush to be? I would be surprised to hear it would be worse than people expect.

If Dak can hold the fort to let's say 4-2 or even 3-3 we will still be in this thing to make a run. Anything less and it becomes very tough.

I bet romo misses two games. three games maxs. I really believe he will be back sooner.

Same here Erod. I see wk 3. Could be wrong, but JG not saying how long he's going to be out says more about him thinking he will be back sooner than later.

It's almost certain to come down to how we perform without him. If we start 0-3 there will be so much pressure to play. But they made the mistake last year of bringing him back too early so that plays a factor as well.

Same.. He tried to get back in the Seattle pre-season game. He'll be back soon. I've thought this all along.

I'm thinking week 3 if we start 1-1.

Those 2 or 3 losses cannot be to the Giants and Skins. This race looks to be tight and tie breakers could easily come into play.

I could be looking into preseason performances a little too much here, but the Giants have looked awful. I mean down right, worst record in the league kind of awful. We should beat them with Showers in at QB.

You mean all those bleeding hearts who only care about Romo's well being or those folks who've always disliked the guy and will hold a small party whenever he retires?
Just because you are projecting your lack of empathy for others, doesn't mean others really don't care. I wanted Aikman to retire, Irvin to retire.

No matter how hard it is to understand, some people actually do care what happens to the players. There's guts and there is being smart about your future.

I'm my opinion, Tony Romo is a HOF QB regardless of his postseason record. How about you guys?

51% want him back next season. What a story it would be if he came back and we won a Superbowl then rides off into the sunset getting some respect as a Superbowl winning, QB that was statically one of the great all-rime (passer rating) . Might get him some consideration for the Hall.

That's right.
36 year old males do not have "brittle" bones, unless they have some unusual calcium deficiency

Maybe 66, not 36.
Not other thing besides the bones, maybe. Joints, tendons, muscle mass, etc.

Romo is almost certain to be in a hurry to return to the game day lineup and Jerry is more than likely to encourage it. Nevertheless, the doctors should rightfully be entitled to a strong influence upon when Tony's return is permissible. I'm betting it'll more than likely be ASAP, like it or not.

The doctor also stated that if came back before the bone is healed and took another hit...it most likely will cause long term nerve damage. Have to believe this is more serious injury then the Jones are telling everyone. Stephen Jones supported Tony Romo but it sure sounded like he see's the righting on the wall....

So David carr was back quick.......Last year aikman had to point out he was back quicker. When romo broke his finger in 08 siragusa had to point out how quick he played with that injury as if he were a qb with a broken finger on his throwing hand..

I guess they are all saying Tony isn't tough. Pretty Insulting. I give Romo a ton of credit for how nice he is to everyone, almost nobody has good things to say about him for some reason whether its his play, his salary, his personal life, his haircut, his weight, his golf etc....Yet he always smiles and answers every question.

Going to miss him when he is gone. Just like when the morons boo'd Emmitt for an honest factually correct comment when he signed in Arizona in 03.

Hey up yours man your old and stuff and we got a new guy, Troy Hambrick..so there.

Wish this wasn't case but that is #JaylonSmith reality. Only hope is for 2017 & that is longshot. Hope he makes it.

Jaylon Smith is a lock to start the season on the NFI. After those 6 weeks are up, my guess is he'll move to IR.

Tony Romo’s Back Injury w/@ProFootballDoc, Dr.Chao: http://goo.gl/WPTsUX Likely to be mild, w/no nerve damage&likely wont require surgery

It's not @tonyromo fragility leading to injuries. More likely continued desire to extend plays vs decreasing ability to dodge big hits.

Could throw soon (couple weeks), but @tonyromo needs to avoid contact for minimum 6 weeks.

Pre-season play means nothing. The Cardinals have looked awful, but everyone knows they are a Super Bowl contender.

I'm not sure why you're putting so much on Romo's willingness to go back into the game as an indicator of what is structurally wrong in his back.

Romo also said post game he didn't get X-rays because they didn't think it warranted it at the time. Following day they do run an MRI and discover his vertebrae was crushed/fractured. The vertebrae provides protection to the spinal cord. You don't wanna rush back when the bone is compromised ..

Seems to be a common theme going around the NFL today. Sirius NFL was talking about why even have preseason, talked about Jim Harbaugh not wanting to play preseason at all and the rise in injuries due to preseason games....to many star players are missing time due to injuries and player issues (suspensions).....

Great article summing up Dr. Chao's thoughts. Puts things in perspective.
