Per Mickey Spagnola, the fracture in Tony Romo's L1 vertebrae is so small, it wasn't detected with a x-ray and only showed up on the MRI.

That said, it still has to heal, but I'll take a small back fracture over a large one every time.

Wonder if there's any Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy the trainers could utilize to speed up the healing process, seeing as how the fracture is so small

I've seen at least three people here make the comment that there are "tired of his act". I've never seen a player that has done what he's done for us get disrespected so much

Lol, what act is that? It's ******* football, people get hurt.

I'm with you.

ok than. what is it? what makes Romo an outlier? is he an outlier?

i havent seen anyone discuss what makes Romo so special. Is he only one extending plays this much? If its a lack of support for romo (oline/defense) do other QBs who extend plays have good support or not and what is their injury frequency? wish i could see an article or a diagram on this but i havent heard anyone go in depth about it.

i come across a lot of folks saying Romo is injury prone. But than the counter is well not so from you all in this board. The counter to that is than what makes Romo different if its not his bones (which is logical by the way)?

i dont expect anyone to have a solution or answer to this. just would like some further dialogue on it if possible. as objective as possible.
The Doctor is saying how many 36 year old QBs are still trying to extend plays? He's not saying it's because of the way he plays, he's saying it's because he now lacks the ability to do it correctly. Making something out of nothing is for young guys like Wilson and Newton. Do you see Brady and Palmer running around like chickens with their heads cut off trying to get a few extra yards? No.

I bet romo misses two games. three games maxs. I really believe he will be back sooner.
The fact that JG says they have received multiple timelines makes me think that it may be an incomplete fracture. In that scenario the dilemma would be that he can tolerate stressing it it earlier vs the risk of it turning into a complete fracture.

Thanks for posting. I actually think Romo probably won't feel that much pain but the time will be in.getting his throwing strength up. David Carr actually fractured TWO vertrebrae

What did he do to protect against hits if it is so critical to wait for them to heal according to Chao?

Steven mostly talked about confidence in Dak, but he also said Tony is 100% working toward getting back on the field. He talked about Zeke's physical play in Seattle and said he thinks the pass rush is going to be much better than people expect. The much more interesting segment came afterward with Dr. David Chao who explained that the difference between Tony's transverse process injury and the compression fracture he just suffered is that the former was painful because he broke exterior bones connected to muscle and that the latter takes more healing because a compression fracture is structural damage at the core of the spine. Kirwan asked about what we've all been assuming: Romo is 36 with a wife and two kids and a whole lot of life ahead of him. He needs to be thinking about retirement, right? The doctor said no more than any other football player. He said Tony is 36, which may be old in football years but not in human years, so Tony is not fragile and doesn't have brittle bones. He said He'll be able to go back to practice in a red jersey in a few weeks. He just can't take hits until six weeks or so, which is the general minimum amount of time it takes human bones to heal. He mentioned though that David Carr had the same injury some years ago and he was back on the field a lot sooner than six weeks.
Good reporting........Great reporting. Need more like this on the Zone.

Hard to follow since it was cut and pasted, is that Chao saying Jaylon is a long shot to make it back because I havent seen one comment about it in this thread. Or is everybody ignoring an extremely unpleasant thought?
He was answering tweets, and Helman asked about Jaylon Smith. That was his response.

so doing it at his age is doing it wrong?

so i guess there is no one near his age extending plays huh? he is the only doing it? Maybe Ruthless Burger too?

Sometimes you are just unlucky. In all my years watching football I've never seen a player take a hit like he took last week.

that begs the question who vodood Romo? starting with the holding football/field goal incident to his many interceptions in the worst moments to his injuries etc.

but i don't know its a combination of luck and unluck.

being undrafted/small school now QB for the premier football sports franchise in america/globe and doing it as a starter for several years is pretty lucky. if luck is something you respect. if not than its either a blessing or a result of ambition and determination or all of it.

It's almost certain to come down to how we perform without him. If we start 0-3 there will be so much pressure to play. But they made the mistake last year of bringing him back too early so that plays a factor as well.
yes this is how I see it, if dak does good and wins enough, they will take time getting back to tony, if he doesnt win, then the pressure
will be on to play tony.

I think tony needs to take at least 8 weeks off, maybe 10 and if dak does good, take the season off.
and he needs to learn how to slide better, and go down safely when he needs to, and get rid of the ball, not run.

This is what I said , Tony needs to adjust his game to his age and lack of mobility. get rid of the ball quicker, and sometimes just throw it away.

I laugh at the whole brittle bones argument. The guy just had a part of his scapula/collarbone sawed off by a doctor. If he had brittle bones, I think that doctor would have figured it out and Romo would have retired.

The other thing that people are missing is that they only found this because they sent him for the precautionary MRI and they only did that because he is a QB making a zillion dollars in salary. If this was a WR or DB or RB, they wouldn't have ever detected it and the player would have played through it. And no doubt, many have.

Palmer, just this past weekend.
Looked almost identical with short run to an open area, then going into slide. But he didn't have a guy looping around Doug Free and pouncing on his back as he went into his slide.

Tony blew it, but really, he wasn't trying to be a hero there.

The doctor also stated that if came back before the bone is healed and took another hit...it most likely will cause long term nerve damage. Have to believe this is more serious injury then the Jones are telling everyone. Stephen Jones supported Tony Romo but it sure sounded like he see's the righting on the wall....

Ouch -- sounds like it might entail possible crippling effects if great caution isn't exercised. It's very serious business. It's not something anyone would want to rush back into action with, despite all cost. The implications could possibly be far too serious for that.

Romo has the rest of his life and his family to think about. He'd be well-advised to allow a return to full health and not put himself at any highly unnecessary risks -- not when doing so could conceivably involve life-changing disabilities. Maybe the writing IS on the wall.

The last thing any of us would want to see would be Romo getting himself around in a wheelchair. It's a far too sobering thought, to be sure. Let's just hope it doesn't come to that. I'd much prefer to see Romo sitting in a booth at AT&T Stadium with his wife & family, rooting for his old team.

He will miss four. Daks success will be determined by the divisional games. If he wins those 2 and goes 2-2, then everyone will be fine with that.
