That has never stopped the NFL, nobody will be surprised if they put him in the program and he will get tested regularly.
He asked for it visiting that dispensary, that was really stupid. Players in the legal markets don't do that, they send somebody.

Where is his pappy with the famous "Elliott Honor Code" now? Tweet that about your son, Tracy, Stacy, Lacy Elliott, or whatever your name is.

Look at his lips and gums people....does NOT take a rocket scientist
I cut most of the rocket science classes to play shuffleboard and drink beer but this one whizzed right over my head. Do lips and gums have anything to do with overall skin pigmentation? I was unaware of the lips and gums giveaway and have been freakin' out in front of the mirror.

Pot is a killer test-wise, lasts forever & masking detection is pretty sophisticated now. Unfortunately, it should be a bright line disqualification for any future candidate until the rules become more in-line with societal norms, IMO.
This.
It's almost like the NFL enables them to break this rule. If the NFL really wants players to stop smoking weed or doing rec drugs, they could make the rules a lot harsher. Right now it's 4 strikes and your only out for a short period of time along with tons of rehab programs which is way too easy for players to try to manipulate.
Either hammer them (the players) with larger fines and game suspensions and also the teams with these players with even larger fines and draft penalties so the teams/ownership will be much more involved. That or do away with that rule to let them all smoke and snort at their own risk and move on.
The NFL is so hypocritical it's ridiculous.

I think most fans vastly underestimate how many NFL players smoke pot. It's not just the young kids either. Heck, Mark Stepnoski was not only an avid pot smoker, he has always been a legalized pot advocate.

You get the purple lips if ya smoke too much (from the heat of the joint/blunt/bowl, etc. exposure over a long period of time; similar to "construction hands"). Just tell folks you have chapped lips. I know many professionals that smoke on their lunch breaks...don't worry yourself about it.

Way too much over-reaction. Right now it is not justified to freak out, feel free to do so once he FAILS a drug test. At this point in time, it's all speculation and moot.

They should ban alcohol for all players too; sure that would fly with our sponsors and the players. Dumb laws w little sense aren't meant to be followed in such a fundamental fashion; BS. Let them smoke, who cares? Oh yeah, the alcohol sponsors ($). Money has justified a lot of willful ignorance in the past and today is no different.

Dumb or not, they are the laws and players know what happens when they don't follow them.

So? I still don't blame the players, I blame the DUMB rule; their money, what do I care. Are we going to ban alcohol too or only stick with the established and outdated dumb rules?

That has never stopped the NFL, nobody will be surprised if they put him in the program and he will get tested regularly.

According to the league’s policy on substances of abuse, which was agreed upon with the NFLPA, players are subject to enter the program based on “behavior.”
The policy states: “Behavior (including but not limited to an arrest or conduct related to an alleged misuse of Substances of Abuse occurring up to two (2) football seasons prior to the Player’s applicable scouting combine) which, in the judgment of the Medical Director, exhibits physical, behavioral, or psychological signs or symptoms of misuse of Substances of Abuse.”

Policy dictates what type of behavior would constitute a player being compelled to enroll in the league's substance abuse program.

Visiting a legal marijuana store does not constitute
"physical, behavioral, or psychological signs or symptoms of misuse of Substances of Abuse.”

Texting about a drug test doesn't either.

The league can't just "make up" a reason. It must follow the rules it agreed upon. Otherwise, the NFL Players Union will get involved.

It's logical to me to be a little gun shy in todays climate. Smoke --> fire.

Why speak with such vitriol? Zeke's father moved to Ohio to help his son stay on the straight and narrow. If (a big if) Zeke has wandered down the wrong path, it is his own fault. His father tried. And I don't blame him for defending his son against apparently false allegations.

Alcohol isn't going to be banned because it is legal. We lost that battle in the early 20th Century.

Marijuana is not legal nationally and, so, the NFL isn't going to change its position until it is.

It doesn't really matter what people feel about whether athletes should be allowed to smoke or not (unless you're going to lobby for laws to decriminalize marijuana). The bottom line right now is that it is a federal crime to possess marijuana, and the NFL follows the law of the land in this regard.

So a player KNOWING what the requirements are can:

1. Not smoke
2. Smoke but be "smart" enough not to get caught
3. Smoke, get caught and suffer the consequences

I feel you. Pick 3 if you want but would prefer 2. Federally they can't do it bc of political reasons; makes Law enforcement/DEA/courts/jails/prisons/pharmaceutical industry tons of money. But yeah, they are deemed addicts (losers) because of govt. greed on the position. 4 states and counting, the Fed will have to give eventually (in 3 decades or so:D). Need to keep milkin that cow! We lost Prohibition but turn around and double down on marijuana? Makes total sense...unless profits are to be made by the govt.

You can blame whomever you want and rail all day about the merit of rules, but the facts are that they are the rules and players are choosing to disregard them knowing the possible consequences. When given the options of playing football and making millions of dollars or blazing a doobie, the choice seems fairly simple to me.

The texts were not leaked. They were found on his ex-girlfriend's phone as part of the investigation into the domestic abuse claims made by his ex-girlfriend against Elliott. They became part of public record at that point.
Was just gonna say that. Thank you.

2. ABUSE OF ALCOHOL AND VIOLATIONS OF LAW RELATED TO SUBSTANCES OF ABUSE
2.3 Violations of Law Involving Other Substances of Abuse

Apart from and in addition to any other provisions of this Policy, Players convicted of or admitting to a violation of law (including, within the context of a diversionary program, deferred adjudication, disposition of supervision, or similar arrangement including but not limited to nolo contendere) relating to use, possession, acquisition, sale, or distribution of Substances of Abuse other than alcohol, or conspiring to do so, are subject to appropriate discipline as determined by the Commissioner.

Absent aggravating circumstances, discipline for a first offense will be a suspension without pay for up to four (4) regular and/or post-season games. Discipline for a second or subsequent offense, absent aggravating circumstances, will be a suspension without pay for a minimum of six (6) up to ten (10) regular and/or post-season games. A Player’s treatment history may be considered by the Commissioner in determining the appropriate level of discipline.

I'm not an illegal drug user, and I don't support drug use beyond what may be required medically. I have a spiritual reason why I don't partake in alcohol or drugs.

Having said this, I do believe that the decriminalization of marijuana will happen within 20 to 30 years.
