LANDOVER, Md. -- No matter how well Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott plays, owner Jerry Jones said that as soon as Tony Romo is ready to play he’ll be in the lineup.

Prescott, who completed 22 of 30 passes for 292 yards in the Cowboys’ 27-23 win over Washington, is starting while Romo recovers from a broken bone in his back.

“Not necessarily, not necessarily,” said Jones, when asked if Prescott’s performance would let him be patient with Romo's return.

Tough spot IMO.

If Prescott continues to play well and continues to improve, would be tough to take him off the field. But this still is Romo's team so I can't fault the team for turning the reins back to him.

My fear is that it takes Romo a game or two to get up to speed and we lose one or two of them and that costs us the division down the road.

He doesn't need to be rushed back too soon. I think everyone except those who hate Romo understands he'll be back in the saddle. The concern many have, however, is whether he'll be fully healthy when he returns.

However, if he's not, there's no reason why we should disrupt Dak's learning process. I honestly believe with the rate Dak is playing, if we had the type defense Seattle has, we'd be playoff-bound (definitely) and Super Bowl-bound (likely).

He fits the grinding, methodical, occasional big play offense that the Seahawks played a few years ago.

But we don't have the defense right now. I think in about two years that's going to change with the 2017 draft, the hopeful healing of Jaylon Smith, and a potless Randy Gregory.

Nevertheless, this is Romo's team, even though we think we've found his replacement. I think with this experience, Dak will be ready to take over in two to three years.

I understand your fear. I fear that Romo will come in, forget he's a 36-year-old quarterback (age?), hang in the pocket until the last minute again and then get hit and get injured.

I think it's too late for him to relearn a different style of play. And I believe the next injury he takes will be his last.

We get to the target date for Romo's return and the team is 5-2 and in the race with NYG for the division is on, this will get very interesting. Romo could be on the spot for his future with the team if he doesn't perform as well as Dak and in most cases, better.

The facts are Dak played well enough to win the first game, the run game has not been what we anticipated, the defense has been what we anticipated and Dak is effectively spreading the ball around including getting WR1 back in the game. And he played better in game 2 than 1 and I expect more improvement.

If we do get to that 5-2 and mark and Romo is pronounced healthy, I will have mixed feelings about which should be QB1 and in my most recent memory was Romo's performance when he did play in 2015. Not close to how he looked in 2014.

The real key to this is the D's are still focused on shutting down the run and Dak has played well enough to win both games. What if they back off and start to treat him as a QB that is not a rookie? Or a backup?

This could take a turn that I never thought could happen and instead of those years we spent trying to find QB1, we could have 2 QB1's.

That's a pretty good point. We've seen it take time for Tony to come around. Although he won the Miami game last year he wasn't right, nor was he right against Carolina the following week.

I think he'll be fine and if he isn't - we have the lottery ticket ready to go.

I think if Jerry can sell high on Prescott, he would. Romo for 5 more years!

No matter how much we want to deny it, I think part of the reason that our running game hasn't been successful is because our opponents don't fear Dak as a passer. They are willing to let us put 12-15 play drives together because they know chances are there will be some sort of breakdown.

Basically, we continue to run from run formations and pass from pass formations. The opposing teams don't have to guess. They don't have to play both. With Romo, we would be changing plays to take advantage of what the defense is doing. There would be bigger plays in both the passing and run games with Romo out there.

That being said, Dak has been better than we could have ever imagined and deserves to keep running the team until Romo is 100%. We don't need to rush Romo out there before he is ready.

I felt that way about this injury and agree about the next one and will agree about the next one. I think the only way to be sure is to see his body at the 5 yard line and his head at the 10.

I envision Romo sitting on the porch with his grand kids and going over break by break, complete with the date and defensive player, for each injury. Booger should create a t-shirt with Romo's skeleton and all the injuries with dates and locations.

I am all for let the best player QB the team but there's that part of me, the human part, not the fan part, that pulls for Romo just because of the man's courage and determination. The man just has no quit in him.

Romo turned the ball over 8 times in 4 games last year. (7 int's, 1 fumble) Let's hope he's significantly better this year.

Me too. :)

I really want to see him win a Super Bowl. But I'm thinking the more likely scenario is Romo won't see a Super Bowl due to injuries, and Dak (if we get the defense fixed and presuming Dak continues his progress) will likely be the quarterback who takes us there.

IMO, the criticism, directed at Garrett's opinion concerning who should be his starting quarterback at given time during the season, is valid. He's the head coach. His opinion should matter most. It would be proper for the media to pose the question to Garrett, regardless what anyone thinks of his answer.

However, no one familiar with Jones should be surprised by his reply. He has stated many times in the past how much he believes in Romo. Only a career-ending injury to Romo will change his opinion. Or if Prescott develops rapidly into a mirror image of Aikman. Neither has happened yet. Both are highly unlikely to happen before Romo returns to active status.

I am very excited about Dak....
But the reality is that defenses are going all in to stop the run. Of course everyone knows that we have this monster offensive line, a 4th pick in the draft RB, and a rookie QB that some thought (us included) was a 4th round draft pick. Now none of this takes anything away from what Dak has done. He has played better than almost anyone hoped. Its early, but I don't think I have seen a rookie QB look this good. We have CZ arguments over Alfred Morris vs Zeke because our RB's are paying the early price for playing with a rookie QB combined with a ultra conservative HC/OC.
Jerry says some strange things so far....but he is right that teams will not be able to play us with Romo the way they play us with Dak and that just opens up all sorts of hurt for defensive coordinators.

Dak is our future. And the future looks bright. But this year we need Romo back.

While I might agree about Jerry selling high. It is this five more years of Romo that is both scary and laughable when I read it.

Scary because someone can look at his increasing injuries and think he can play up to his peak level for five more years.

The laughable part should be evident.

i'll be surprised if when tony comes back he doesn't get injured again in that same game. i dont think he can take hits anymore. it likes playing with a broken, glued action figure, may look fine but when it comes time to play something is going to get broken again. i think its over. hope im wrong though.

Jerry is right, but that shouldn't be him saying it.

Zeke is changing the defense a lot. Romo can pull them out of that by DESTROYING them with audibles at the line. In fact, with Romo in, they won't run those defenses much.

But can Romo take a hit? We'll see.
