Collins has been a pleasant surprise

He really has. Haven't expected anything from him but he looks like a player.

With the bears so beat up we've got a good shot at being in decent shape when Lawrence comes back. Excitement creeping back in.

Rather than comment on the players to me it's about the concept. If you are not getting what you want from who you have then you try someone else. People talk about competition in camp and this is the same thing. You perform or you will be watching. I love it and think it could spark something in this team. I still think our problem on D is talent not desire but competition even makes less talented players play harder

Thornton and Mayowa combined have a cap hit less than Barry Church or Scandrick this year. They weren't "prized FA", they were always role players.

So because we overpaid (as usual) for mediocre 1 year wonders, suddenly other bad deals are a bargain? Good to know

I am not ready to throw in the towel on Thornton yet. He's been disappointing but again he's playing a totally different position now than he played much of his career in Philly.

What other actual facts are there to go on? That's what we have, two games. Two games of poor performances, leading to shuffling the deck chairs.

And is "DLaw" some savior who will suddenly make all of these mediocre players better? I'm not sure about that. Even his sacks last year were with the benefit of the attention Hardy was getting last year. The defensive coordinator himself even pointed out that fact. There's no guarantee he'll even match last year's level of productivity.

Two games in, this thing looks as bad as we feared. That's what we have to go on in any assessment.

I'm really not so sure about Smith at Mike

If we are assuming Smith gets healthy and returns to his college form, I might consider moving Lee back to MLB and Smith at WLB.

I know, I know, Lee struggles with healthy at the MLB position but I think if Smith is really healthy and as good as the Cowboys think, then he's a perfect, dominant WLB type......... he can cover, blitz, operate in space, etc.

Yep, but no doubt all the castoff FA's and rookies they bring in will be "just fine" next year in the off season. Draft and sign Talent. Its the only way to fix this defense.

None of these guys would start for a playoff caliber defense
Mediocre players being replaced by other mediocre players does not improve anything. It is just window dressing to give the impression of 'trying'

Gotta love the guys that say you cant buy a defense just because the Cowboys cant and arent doing it. Early, but Giants early returns are promising.

I remember all the snickers I heard from these same guys that the Giants were overpaying for FAs. Well those FAs helped the Giants beat us and that is what counts.....winning.

Our FO continues to make bad decisions and these guys keep applauding them

Anybody saying you "can't buy a defense" obviously didn't watch this year's Super Bowl, because that's exactly what Elway and the Broncos did.

And yeah, so far, so good for the Giants. But man, those defensive tackles are FAT! Marinelli would never go for that around here...

Not really. They knew he was light against the run when they got him. He should be OK as a situational pass rusher.

As you said, he doesn't really hold up against the run well and to date, he's shown very little in terms of being a legit situational pass rusher. So no, I wouldn't say he's trending to being a good situational pass rusher. That was a C graded signing right there.

I read an article that went over teams that had pushed the most money into the future on the salary cap. And it was the Cowboys by a long long margin. Basically saying that they have mismanaged the cap more than any other team by a long shot. To some dagree mortgaging our future.

Oh no question at the heart of it is a talent-issue or lack there of.

They need another DE another CB and another safety.

And depending what happens with Smith another LB.
