Lol! at least somebody's not worried about that chronic back injury, I see.

Seriously, though, these two guys are pretty cool dudes. I would love to kick back over a beer with both of them and hear what really went on during those Bennett years.

I was going to reply to the first part but dont wanna get banned LOL

I doubt you could get either to say much. I could totally see Tony "Eh, he was an ok dude *smirk*"

I'd rather not hear those real thoughts. Not publicly anyway. I like how Witten chose to stay above the fray and in the process, quietly make MB look more the fool. But here's my guess at it.

"...Marty is a good player. He really is. He enjoys entertaining, but I'm glad he's in a good place now and he's having a good year so far. He is, he's a good football player."
Translation: His childish comments aren't really worth my attention. He's more about flash than substance, and he's good. Not great. Good.

"Hey look, I've always taken a lot of pride in that I want to play and play at a high level,"
Translation: If he's not good enough to play at a high enough level to beat me out, he won't get to play. He wanted it handed to him.

"I'm always communicating and helping and all of that stuff. And there is a part of the business that I get. Martellus probably wanted his opportunity and to be able to go play and I get that. I don't know where all that really kind of stems from. So that's why I said I know he's in a good place."

Translation: I communicated and he was too dense and entitled to listen. Opportunities are earned, not gift-wrapped and if he decided to hate me because I wouldn't roll over for him, that's not worth wasting my time. Now he's a 2nd TE where he belongs and with a coach who won't take his crap for long.

"For me, every day you've got to go prove it and you've got to go earn it and that's something I have a chip on my shoulder and it really gives me confidence because that's the way I approach it."
Translation: I work hard and I'm not giving my job to someone who wouldn't work as hard as I do.

"...I'm a better player because of that [competition] and I think hopefully other people would say the same things."
Translation: MB was a whiny child who couldn't understand that he had to earn the job and was too lazy do it. I hoped he might one day understand what it takes to be great, but he obviously doesn't.

How was that?
Perfect... lol

I'm sure Witten will break down during his HoF speech over all the mean things "what's his name" said about him.

As a completely-straight male father of two in a loving and committed relationship, I'd be hard pressed not to leave my wife and marry Jason Witten if he and Tony ever broke up and he for some reason wanted me to.
I'm not gonna lie, I have professed my love of Jason Witten to my girlfriend in the past, and she still isn't 100% sure I wasn't being serious.

What's not to love? Other than the comb-over, maybe.

I can't blame Witten for not going out of his way to help train someone who may replace him. It would be strange for someone to actually do that. Especially when Witten still planned to play for so many years.

There is a reason Martelus Bennett has been on several teams and has burned bridges everywhere he has played. It had nothing to do with Witten and everything to do with the brain in Marty B.'s head.
It sounds like Romo is doing that with Dak.
But he's a lot further along in his career than Witten was at the time.

I wouldn't be surprised if those are his real thoughts. He's just a classy competitor, he knows that competition can often lead to one guy feeling miffed, and I'm sure he doesn't take any of it personal or feel any sort of way about Bennett.

Not so sure about the "classy" part. I've heard tell of Witten talking lots of smack out there. There was one preseason where a safety was brought in for a look. They wanted Witten's opinion of the safety's cover skills and had Jason run a route against him. After ONE play, Witten caught the ball on the kid and he said "He's garbage. Get rid of him."

Calling someone 'garbage' is in no way classy. I like Witten as a player but his doo-doo stinks just like everyone else.

You mean sounds like what you hope Romo is doing with Dak. You hope he's giving Dak the cold shoulder and not doing anything to get him ready to play.

Which is the exact opposite of what I've heard so far, with so many people gushing over how well Romo is mentoring him, so if you have any sources for this belief, I'd like to know what they are.

If I watched the E:60 I might come away thinking Jason Witten was at fault too,,

I'm not going to fully disagree with you. But as a Cowboys fan, it's hard to side with Marty B. But I loved Marty B's attitude regarding his time with the Bears. Talkin about how they had a bunch of B's on the team, and no dogs.

I honestly never heard that one. Did he really say it like that? Ouch.

Don't tell me what I hope. I want Romo helping dak, and from what I've heard he's doing just that.
Reports are that he has been spending a lot of time in the film room with him after hours.

His comments on the Bears were funny,,, and for what it's worth, Martellus was (is) a favorite of mine. I could see the potential in that monster frame and I like quirky people just being themselves, let your freak flag fly! But the guy was hard to coach and unreliable,,, I'm glad things might have finally worked out for him but I'm disappointed we couldn't get more out of him early in his career.

Bennett was the anti-Witten in just about every regard. I couldn't tell you how hard Bennett did or did not work, but he was such a goofball publicly that it fed into the perception that he didn't take the job seriously. He very well could have been working his tail off. More importantly, imagine he and Witten coexisting in the tight ends room. Talk about the Odd Couple.

Witten likely struggled to relate with and/or mentor a player who approached things like Bennett, and Bennett likely struggled to take advice from a player who was so different.

I think there have been other articles quoting Bennett about how he hated always being told to "be like Witten!" Bennett could have undoubtedly learned a lot about the game by trying to be like Bennett, but that's also likely a difficult message to live by when you're a 22-year-old.

When he disrespected his position coach as a rookie on Hard Knocks that was all I needed to see. Of course my opinion on him then didn't go over very well with the Josephs but it's been proven right over time. He's a major league idiot.

It's like with Randy Gregory and the failed combine drug test. There are certain things a player can do that tells you all you need to know about him. Rolling your eyes behind your position coach's back and in front of the camera as a rookie is one of those things. Moron 4 Life.

Hearsay has never been admissible.
