As Dak Prescott has solidified his hold on the starting quarterback role with the Dallas Cowboys, it’s left Tony Romo’s future up in the air. While Jerry Jones has made it clear that he would like to keep Romo in Dallas, Romo still wants to play, and he could be in the market for a new team this offseason. Romo should be a hot commodity for quarterback-needy teams, but his value may be lower than expected.

General managers around the league project that the Cowboys could get “some sort of mid to late-round conditional pick” for Romo, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter and Chris Mortenson.

Quarterback market watch
As holiday shoppers make out their shopping lists, NFL teams already have theirs waiting, especially at the eclectic quarterback position, where teams have any number of ways in which they can spend their money.

The list of quarterbacks who could or will be available in the coming offseason is of a much higher profile than in the past, but each quarterback comes with his own questions. Still, the following is a list of QBs that teams such as the Bears, Jets, 49ers and others will be sifting through:

Tony Romo, Dallas Cowboys
Though Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has no plans to move on from Romo, many people around the league believe Dallas will end up doing so.

Do we play AFC West next year. I can't think that Elway isn't licking his chops at the moment unless they think Lynch will be ready next season .

Who care what teams value Romo at. He's under contract as a Cowboy and Jerry isn't giving him away. Dak needs a backup, and if Romo is that next year, then more the merrier. Fans are so obsessed with his salary. We always find ways to manage the cap. Next year will be no different if Romo stays.

Who would have ever thought Sam Bradford with 1 year left on his deal could fetch a 1st rounder plus? It's all about being in position to capitalize. They need to free up the cap room that will allow them to keep him and then wait for an injury or other desperate team to come calling. We're talking about a top tier qb. You don't give them away for free or let them go to your competition.

Scuttlebutt puts him in Denver but whatever the pick(hoping for a second) it will be conditional. Just be glad to dump the salary.

I think Romo only gets a 3rd rounder due to his ailing back and I would take it rather than just cut him.

Vikings only did that trade right before the season because of injury, I don't think teams will give up anything high for Romo. At this point I'm just expecting him to be cut.

Imo age and injury concerns are the biggest obstacles. Bradford is at least "young" for QBS and the Vikings thought they were good enough elsewhere that it would be worth giving up a first for him

The biggest value is trading his salary no?

Trade or release, the Cowboys would reap the same benefit cap wise (I've heard the same $5 mil figure bandied about).

What would make it better for the Cowboys as @bkight13 has pointed out is getting Romo to take even less in exchange for a guaranteed amount. There is no more guaranteed money left on Romo's contract as it now reads.

Then the Cowboys would get some kind of trade-compensation for him and even more savings on the salary cap.

My guess is 2nd round, conditional to 1st round if he plays 15 games and/or gets to championship game or better.

He won't be here next year. Not as a backup.
After the season, I foresee Romo going to Jerry Jones and saying he wants to play again and wants to be traded (or released) to a team that will give him that shot.
A teary-eyed Jerry Jones will tell the press that he truly wants Romo to remain a Cowboy, doesn't care if he's the highest paid backup in history but respects Romo enough to let him finish his career as a starter elsewhere.
They will both hug and cry with Jones lamenting that Romo never got the chance to win a championship with the Cowboys.
He'll likely get traded for a third-round pick with conditions attached to it should he get a team to the playoffs/championship/Super Bowl or a third and a conditional pick under the same circumstances.
He won't fetch a first. He's 37 and too fragile for his age.
Unfortunately for him (barring a debilitating injury to Dez that keeps him out a year), the Romo era is over in Dallas.
