Romo’s trade value may not be worth as much as you think

A second rounder would be great - 3 day one picks to bolster our defense.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but if I'm not mistaken, the cap savings for releasing him are more than if we trade him, so anything other than a 1st or 2nd round pick probably isn't as beneficial as releasing him.

He won't be here next year. Not as a backup.
After the season, I foresee Romo going to Jerry Jones and saying he wants to play again and wants to be traded (or released) to a team that will give him that shot.
A teary-eyed Jerry Jones will tell the press that he truly wants Romo to remain a Cowboy, doesn't care if he's the highest paid backup in history but respects Romo enough to let him finish his career as a starter elsewhere.
They will both hug and cry with Jones lamenting that Romo never got the chance to win a championship with the Cowboys.
He'll likely get traded for a third-round pick with conditions attached to it should he get a team to the playoffs/championship/Super Bowl or a third and a conditional pick under the same circumstances.
He won't fetch a first. He's 37 and too fragile for his age.
Unfortunately for him (barring a debilitating injury to Dez that keeps him out a year), the Romo era is over in Dallas.

Agreed. He won't be here as a backup in '17.

I'd say it will be Sanchez.

As Dak Prescott has solidified his hold on the starting quarterback role with the Dallas Cowboys, it’s left Tony Romo’s future up in the air. While Jerry Jones has made it clear that he would like to keep Romo in Dallas, Romo still wants to play, and he could be in the market for a new team this offseason. Romo should be a hot commodity for quarterback-needy teams, but his value may be lower than expected.

General managers around the league project that the Cowboys could get “some sort of mid to late-round conditional pick” for Romo, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter and Chris Mortenson.

Quarterback market watch
As holiday shoppers make out their shopping lists, NFL teams already have theirs waiting, especially at the eclectic quarterback position, where teams have any number of ways in which they can spend their money.

The list of quarterbacks who could or will be available in the coming offseason is of a much higher profile than in the past, but each quarterback comes with his own questions. Still, the following is a list of QBs that teams such as the Bears, Jets, 49ers and others will be sifting through:

i

Tony Romo, Dallas Cowboys
Though Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has no plans to move on from Romo, many people around the league believe Dallas will end up doing so.

If Bradford got a rd1 pick theres no doubt Romo will get one for Dallas and probably even more. As bad as QB play is right now in the NFL there will be a team that will give Dallas what it wants.

Ummm, yeah. Bradford is about 10 years younger than Romo and doesn't have injury issues. No one is giving us a 1st for Romo ... we'll be lucky to get a 4th.

The two situations are like comparing apples to oranges. Folks really need to stop bringing up the Bradford trade.

He is not getting traded. No way they would trade him and not let him pick his own team if he wants to continue playing. If he wants to continue playing he will be released.

While I agree to a point, I feel it's also a bit of a fallacy. If a bad team offers a 1st round pick, and nobody else offers anything close, he's likely getting traded to that bad team.

Well yeah. There is that. I think Romo retires. All that left is the salary cap ramifications. He'll wait til June 1st.

I have the feeling we are going to lose a fringe element of the fanbase the first day Romo is not a Cowboy
