Romo’s trade value may not be worth as much as you think

Romo will renegotiate his deal to get traded. I think we'll get a conditional draft pick for him. Probably a 2nd rounder that will fall to a 3rd or 4th if he plays less than half the teams snaps or something. Any team trading for him has to protect themselves against another injury.
Why would he need to renegotiate his contract to be traded?

ANd that would be the dumbest thing Dallas could do. Who cares what Romo wants? If a team offers a pick for him then take it, and screw what Romo thinks about it.
He has the option to retire which would kill the trade.

This. That's why unless a team gives us a 1st or 2nd, Tony is arguably more valuable to the team being released rather than traded.
It does not really matter. The June 1st cut just pushes more money into the 2018 cap instead of absorbing everything in 2017. The total amount is the same.

They can easily restructure other contracts to get cap space in 2017 if needed.

Trade or release, the Cowboys would reap the same benefit cap wise (I've heard the same $5 mil figure bandied about).

What would make it better for the Cowboys as @bkight13 has pointed out is getting Romo to take even less in exchange for a guaranteed amount. There is no more guaranteed money left on Romo's contract as it now reads.

Then the Cowboys would get some kind of trade-compensation for him and even more savings on the salary cap.

Why would they need to give him guaranteed money to do a trade?

0% chance of that happening. NONE.

I wouldn't give that a zero percent chance. Romo has some good reasons to retire. He's rich. He's got a family. He keeps getting hurt while playing. I wouldn't blame him one bit if he decided to hang up his cleats and enjoy time with his family. A career as a sportscaster is probably available if he wants one. Life got really good for Jimmy Johnson after football and it can for Romo as well.

Do I think it's more likely he'll play on rather than retire? Sure, I do. I just wouldn't give retirement a zero percent chance. There's definitely a higher percentage than that.

According to @bkight13 the Cowboys would lower their cap hit in exchange for giving Romo guaranteed money, which he's not entitled to any in '17. Then the Cowboys would trade Romo, with the new contract to another team. Romo would get guaranteed money in '17, the Cowboys would get a smaller cap hit and the team Romo is traded to would get a slightly smaller contract than the $14 mil Romo is due in '17. $14 mil is probably a bit much for a guy who hasn't played in two years and has become injury prone.

One thing about him retiring is that the Cowboys could ask for a portion of the signing bonus back, ala Barry Sanders.

They are in the last year of his SB pro-ration so the most they could get back is 5m

For those saying Romo could retire that means he can't play anymore for anyone but DAL still keeps his rights....not really leverage

The idea of the new contract is that it helps both sides........DAL lowers its cap hit in March when they need they need the space instead of June 1st.......it helps Romo with more guaranteed money no matter where he plays......if traded as is the new team could cut him Sept 1st and owe him nothing

-My opinion is that if he stays with DAL as a back-up he does it for 7m a year
-If he wants to play he is traded for a 1st with a new 3/42m deal 24m guaranteed
-If he retires he does it in a way to help DAL and they don't go after the 5m SB money

Tony Dorsett was traded to Denver to clear the way for Walker to start.

Craig Morton was traded for the first round pick we used on Randy White. Though not a legend he did lead us to our first super bowl and was a starter for several years before Staubach. He had a 32-14 record as a starter.

Umm. Jerry Jones was digging holes for oil when that happened.

Show me the cowboys player in this era who they have traded instead of released.

The OL drafted who couldn't play in the league because of his short arms.

Remember that, copy and paste error boy?
Don't remember but he couldn't play OT.

Don't know what to tell you Eagles fan boy.
