Let's pump the brakes on Irving

He needs to be in there more. I don't care about him 'disappearing' for games, because there is not one guy that is consistent on the D-line that just make game-changing plays every game.
maybe we can play him more at DE vs. DT

While I agree he dominates the game last night and deserves a lot of credit in the win, his play is too inconsistent for me to anoint him the "Pass Rusher Supreme" just yet.

I hope he builds on this game, especially this time of year. Man it would be awesome if one of the DL, or the whole DL TBH, caught fire right before the playoffs. Irving just hasn't been the consistent threat we need yet. His good games are random right now, but I truly hope he turns the corner.
You have to remember that he was playing tackle and got switched to DE for this game. This should have made him more productive and it did, when Lawrence comes back to DE then will see if the tackle position slows him down. It would be nice to see him doing the same thing at tackle that he did last night.

Think Vinny Curry when it comes to Irving. Sometimes there's a reason players are better with limited snaps. Would love to see more playing time at LDE though

My problem with this thread is that it's making too many assumptions.

I, nor any post I've seen suggested that Irving is von miller. Or some other elite DE. Or a elite player at all.

He had a good game. Why does it have to be more then that?
Because pass rush is this teams biggest weakness. And fans will grasp any positive play from any d-line player that flashes in the hopes that he solves...or at least contributes to....solving the teams largest deficiency.

Irving is too inconsistent to say he is the answer. But I do think he has earned more snaps.

Sounds like a personal problem.

The fans you are describing are going to be the same ones who will be calling Irving a waste of a roster spot if he has an average game next time.

That's why I said to take his performance at Face value and acknowledge for what it was, a good game. Nothing more, nothing less.

Maliek Collins says otherwise. He was disruptive tonight also. Him and Irving next to each other were creating problems

Collins had another good game. His recovery of Winston's fumble was one of the big plays of the game.

He was playing vs a backup RT last night

Yup. Buc starting tackle was out w/injury. I could be wrong but I think the Packer starting line opposite Irving was also out injured when we played in Green Bay.

Can Irving do it against starters?

I was totally stoked to see his play last night but there are still big questions, IMO.

Why are people always telling us to "tap your breaks"? The guy was dominate last night. He's inconsistent. We get it. But his inconsistencies is still better than anyone on this defensive line probably not named Demarcus Lawrence.

This. Exactly.

Collins lining up alongside Irving helped free him up a bit. Great effort by both of them last night.
Also, Terrell McClain played well at times.

More importantly, how long before someone mispells David Irving's last name the way they do Michael Irvin?

LDE might be his natural position. He looked like JPP out there. He was playing vs a backup RT last night but I'm happy he took advantage of that. I don't recall Tyrone Crawford dominating at any time this season and for sure he faced backup guys at some point (Minnesota and Philly I can recall from the top of my mind).
I know right, it's good that we finally had a guy exploit the other team's weakness.

Collins spin move on the Irving sack on Winston was impressive.

Irving is a young player who just needs more reps and his performance last night will likely get him more reps. He could be just what we're looking for to improve our pass rush heading into the playoffs especially in the 4th quarter. To win big games you need a 4th quarter pass rush because as we saw last night in a tight game, a great pass rush can help save a game in the final moments.

Marinelli has been tapping breaks on Irving all season, maybe he needs to step on gas instead.

How many other Cowboys DL have been defensive player of the week this season? Irving likely gets another one with his performance against TB. McClain was good. Collins was good. Mayowa was good. Irving was utter devestation.

Crawford lined up against that same scrub RT before leaving game. But it was Irving and only Irving that not just dominated that RT but forced TB to throw kitchen sink at Irving just to try and slow him down, no avail.

Winston had to file a restraining order just get back to his own sideline. Fans can tap breaks all they want but I hope Irving doesn't, now that he's unleashed.

Irving has been good all season...the stats don't show it but he's played a lot of DT. I know his wingspan has given lots of QBs trouble, even if he's not getting to the QB. He can contest throws like a basketball player contesting shots.

Instead of pumping the brakes, I think I'll continue to stay excited about a player realizing his potential and
continues to contribute, bigly.

If this is true then they need to keep him at DE. He has the speed and length to play DE and be very effective it seems.
