Welp, he must think his rookie contract wont be his only one. Gave the parents a couple nice gifts for the holiday.

I hope he's able to fully recover. As a ND homer and a Cowboys fan it's one thing. But, Jaylon Smith is a terrific kid who deserves to be able to succeed or fail on his own merits. With his knee/leg fully recovered, he will get that shot, and I have no doubt that he will succeed. It's nice to hear this for a really good kid.

Does that mean he could be eligable to come off ir or however you classify his status and play in the playoffs?
No, they passed that point. The last chance was around week 14 at which point they had to either activate him from NFI or put him on IR for the season.

Actually, they can bring back 1 player from IR. That has been considered to be either La'el Collins or Tapper that could return, but Jaylon Smith might be eligible; however, if they were going to put him on the 53 they would have done it in week 14.

If all of that is accurate, then you're absolutely right. It became a risk/reward decision and the staff erred on the side of caution. Sounding like we'll get a good look at his talent in a few months.

Meaning we once again went the coward's route if he was medically cleared.

Uh huh. Is "regenerating" the same as "firing"? Until there's something specific, like "he can lift his foot" or "he doesn't need the brace anymore," I'm not getting excited.

This isn't speculating, this is straight out of Jaylons mouth telling us he's participating in OTAs.

Broaddus even said when the nerve is back Jaylon would be the one to tell us

I listened to the interview on 105.3. Jaylon did not mince words. He said that the nerve is regenerating and that he could have played WITH the brace on...not without it yet.

I'm optimistic, but cautiously so. Until he makes an appearance in a game, all he symbolizes for me is potential. Potential means you haven't done it yet. But it sure is a ton of potential. :)

I personally don't think he was/is medically cleared to play. On the off chance that he was, I would guess that a year layoff would have quite an impact on a coach's decision to bring him back. At the very least, he'd have to be eased back in and the team just doesn't have time for that right now. Speculation on my part, of course.

I was hopeful for this year, yet there was no reason to rush Jaylon back. Cowboys drafted Smith understanding he would most likely red shirt the rookie season. No biggy. Can y'all say TWO 1st ROUNDERS come April? We'll have one, but count Jaylon in as our second, but with a whole offseason as a pro. Huge!

Yeah and you can only bring one guy back right? Smith or Collins? Given what he's coming back from, I think that's a no brainer. Let him take this offseason and come show out in camp.
And the wheels in my head are turning thinking that they signed Cooper because of this foot development with Smith and want to activate him for the playoffs instead of Collins?????

Am I the only one slightly offended by his choice of words? He can outperform guys that have been doing this since OTAs? Because the only defensive player we have that is somewhat playing at an elite level is Sean Lee. He has never tackled someone in a NFL practice! Let alone a regular season game! Let alone a playoff game! He has not tackled anyone at any level in over a year! So I admire confidence and swag....but have some respect for what it takes to play at this level!

He did not say it was a 4.5 in seconds, it could have been minutes.

Anyway, if it is the case, plan on drafting the Butt-kid with the 2nd pick next year. Hot dang!
