Byron Jones Explains why he was so far off Cook on crucial play

Byron Jones: "So we were in a zone coverage, Cover 2. I'm an underneath dropper, and you know, we all understand what [Aaron] Rodgers is gonna do. We understand he's gonna leave the pocket, so the play's gonna be extended. The zone kind of gets all warped up when he holds the ball and he's running outside the pocket. I kept my eyes on Rodgers like I'm coached to do and tried to defend my seam, and then of course you got [Jared] Cook sneaking behind me and he catches it on the sideline.

"It's one of those plays where it's just like, 'Really, Rodgers?' I mean, he threw a dime on the move. You don't see stuff like that. Quarterbacks like that, they find those small holes in the zone and they can just take advantage of it, and Rodgers was able to do that."

I don't know, all the other receivers besides Cook on that side seemed to be covered, Jones might have realized that there wasn't anybody in front of him and taken a peek behind.

He made a mental mistake. He bit on the notion that Rodgers was going to run. He needed to decide in a split second whether he was going to defend Rodgers running up the seam or continue to trail away and carry the receiver closely up field.

He chose wrong.
 
its just that. a great QB made a play in a very small spot. In reality Dallas' inability to contain and pressure Rodgers is more at fault. The secondary is covering 6sec before Rodgers throws the ball. Once Lawrence goes inside and causes a pileup that takes out Collins Rodgers has all day to throw. Great QB made a great throw that 99% of the nfl QBs dont make. PERIOD.

It sounds like excuses. He got caught peaking at Rodgers while he was covering no one.

Bingo. Blitz there, and Rodgers has to settle for a short dump off. More than fine on 3rd and 20 from that spot.

:hammer: Man....he should have seen that there wasn't any receivers In front of him and drifted deeper and played Cook. That's just commoN sense
 
Rodgers is gonna beat you regardless. He's the best QB in the game. That's why your coach has to "coach around" Rodgers. A few ways to do that are 1) not trading FGs with a QB that could put up 50 on you, 2) not giving them the ball back with enough time to win, and 3) stick to your running game to control the clock and keep Rodgers off the field. We failed on all 3 of those accounts. It was a bad play by Byron Jones but it wasn't his fault that we were even in that position.

Lawrence made the mistake on this play not jones.

yeah exactly, he should have stayed with the receiver because no way Jordan's older brother gets enough yards with his legs.

Thats just rich. Anytime I watch our DBs their back is to the QB like a bunch of fools. Or is it just the safeties who are coached to see where the ball is coming from?
