None of this is hard to understand at all.

If Romo had a contract of $8 million, for example, we would have trading partners for sure.

The combination of age, injury risk and contract make a trade unappealing to most teams. $14 mil base...escalating to $19 mil and $20 mil in '18 and '19...are just too stiff a price.

What's hard to understand is why more fans here don't--or can't accept these obvious facts.

We've had a lot of posters living in fantasy-land about trade value.

Romo could always agree to restructure as part of a trade

8.9 in 2017 if post June 1
Plus, cap help can be used on your own guys too.

but you don't get that extra money until june 2 after all the free agents and draft has gone by. it's for leftovers...by that time our own free agents will have already signed elsewhere. the only thing i can see this being helpful is in resigning martin maybe....

If you are making him a June 1 cap hit anyway, why the rush to cut him tomorrow?
Again, got to do right by Tony.

It is all that matters.

It gives me a nice warm feeling in my tummy that Jerry lets players go out on their own terms. That is so classy and really helps "perception".

I think it would be hilarious is we cut Romo tomorrow, the Skins trade Cousins to San Fran this weekend and Romo tells Jerry, "Sorry, but business is business" and signs in Washington.

In all seriousness, cutting him tomorrow and designating him June 1 is a clear sign this was a do right by Tony move instead of a try to make the Cowboys better move.

it also works the other way when guys like ratliff and orton squeeze you and make you look weak.

So how does this team improve in 2017?? Draft picks? We have 18 FA's that we may lose, and can't afford to pay anybody but backups. How does this team get better, or specifically the defense??

His contract likely would have been restructured (like how Murray's was restructured when he was traded to Tennessee by Philly last year), so continually spitting the $19MM and $20MM number is likely bogus. Further, a team taking him on even at that contract, can cut him and save like $15MM against the cap next year. So they won't be crushed by his contract, even if the odd circumstance that they didn't restructure him.

Jones mishandled this. It's pretty much that simple.

There hasn't been a single valid rumor about interested trading partners. That reality tells you everything.

Romo only makes sense for 1 or 2 teams, not enough to drive the market.

and then Dak has a severe sophomore slump in 2017 as a nice cherry on top

He obviously isn't ready. Doesn't mean he won't be.

This is a one or two year rental for Denver if they get Romo, not an indictment on Lynch.

Sure it is. The guy SHOULD be ready, and even if he isn't, on the way to getting there and just needing more reps. That isn't their view. They aren't even sure he is better than Siemian.

so you keep him, restructure his contract, and let him battle with Dak for the starting spot

you don't have the cap space to do anything in FA this year anyways

This makes Jones look just as weak.

Players don't really care that you handled a player that you basically treat like an adopted son the right way. It just shows he plays favorites.

Think about it from the other side. These teams know that if we don't release Romo, we're stuck with the most overpaid backup in the league who still wants to be a starter somewhere else.

We don't have the leverage here that you seem to think. These teams have the luxury to wait, we don't.

Oh yeah? What's our rush? We have not one, but two starting options at quarterback. "These teams have none".

The fact we could cut him tomorrow and designate him a June 1 would seem to support the idea that Jerry was trying to do right by Tony instead of trying to generate a trade market for him.

Was hoping to get something for him, maybe even a dirty jock strap.
