Hard to say his worth. But we all knew he can play. But I know there was pockets of time where he disappeared then there is the back issue. I think we will see if anyone on the D-Line step up. If not they may be force to pay him.

Cap guys can chime in, but looking at the next 3-4 years, if we don't sign him the cap isn't a valid excuse.

I'm not saying the cap won't be the excuse, but even with Martin and Zeke and Dak coming up, the cap space is there. For the record, I think DLaw is a slightly above average DE, so no way would I pay him a huge deal, and there is little doubt some team will offer him a huge deal. I wouldn't argue against using the tag if he beasts all year.

I know you aren't advocating this stance but just because we have the cap room doesn't mean we should spend more of it on him than he is worth.

Absolutely. Just pointing out if he somehow becomes Lawrence Taylor, we have the cap room to keep him, even with all the other studs we'll have to sign.

I'm boy in favor of paying Lawrence early but all this talk about him playing against bad tackles I feel miss the point for two important and distinct reasons.

First, good players should dominant mediocre ones. Lawrence is doing that. Medicore players don't abuse Medicore players. Bad players don't embarrass bad players.

Second, I don't know if people have been paying attention but offensive line talent and development across the NFL has hit a nadir. The Cowboys have spoiled us into think all pros simply grow in first round draft pick trees. They don't. Lawrence will face a few quality tackles this season to be sure but the majority of the stiffs he plays at RT won't be leaps and bounds better than what he's already seen.

That's true. But we sure don't need him to become the next MBIII, Crawford, Ratliff, or Mikes Austin.

If he has a really big year he will leave for a lot more money then Dallas is going to be able to put into a guy who only had a good year in a contract season.

With 3.5 sacks in just his first two games of 2017, defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence is on his way to a breakout season. With his rookie contract expiring this year, what does this mean for his financial future and his potential to remain with the Dallas Cowboys?

Big things have always been expected for Lawrence, who Dallas who with the 34th overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft. Dallas surrendered their third-round pick that year to Washington to move up 13 spots and draft DeMarcus. While he didn’t have to be Reggie White or even DeMarcus Ware to live up that investment, the Cowboys certainly expected him to become a key part of their defense......

FYI ..........here are franchise tag numbers 2017 ( he'll cost us $17M for another year )

The NFL announced the franchise tag salaries for the 2017 season. Any player tagged receives a one-year, fully-guaranteed contract valued at the five highest paid at the position.

NFL Scouting Combine 2017: Who are Jets watching on Day 1
The set figures are below:

Quarterback: $21.268m
Running back: $12.120m
Receiver: $15.682m
Tight end: $9.780m
Offensive line: $14.271m
Defensive end: $16.934m
Defensive tackle: $13.387m
Linebacker: $14.550m
Cornerback: $14.212
Safety: $10.896m
Kicker/punter: $4.835m

Yep. I normally hate franchise tags for players, but being that he has just now decided to play like this after suspensions, lack of effort ect...and you decided to put it together in your contract year. FRANCHISE just to see if this is real. You dont deserve a contract yet.

I was against resigning him till I seen that he is only 25. Now I have no problem with it.

Nah. He was pretty darn good in 2015.

Yeah he did pretty well with Hardy taking up the blocks on the other side. So I will give him that he made the most of his situation that year.

I wouldn't pay him a huge contract. Not when he's had one pretty good year, and even if he has a great year this year. I don't think he's stayed healthy enough or shown nearly enough to get a huge deal.
