With 3.5 sacks in just his first two games of 2017, defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence is on his way to a breakout season. With his rookie contract expiring this year, what does this mean for his financial future and his potential to remain with the Dallas Cowboys?

Big things have always been expected for Lawrence, who Dallas who with the 34th overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft. Dallas surrendered their third-round pick that year to Washington to move up 13 spots and draft DeMarcus. While he didn’t have to be Reggie White or even DeMarcus Ware to live up that investment, the Cowboys certainly expected him to become a key part of their defense......

The NFL announced the franchise tag salaries for the 2017 season. Any player tagged receives a one-year, fully-guaranteed contract valued at the five highest paid at the position.

Not sure I would ink and extension now... With his back issues you may want to see how he finishes the season.

Then you could either resign him or let him do the free agency thing and maybe get a comp pick.

The other option is to franchise him, let him play the '18 season under the franchise tag and then make a decision.

Cowboys may need the franchise tag in the '19 season for Martin.

Honestly, I'm leaning this way also........especially if stays healthy and continue playing at his current level for the next 6-7 games. We have seen flashes over the last couple years........

The guy is by far our best pass rusher and is on pace for over 20 sacks. Id take that risk. If he finishes the season with 16+ sacks, we won't be able to afford him AND Zack

Nick Perry just signed a 60 million dollar contract based on one season with over 4 sacks.

Lawrence will get a huge deal if he hits double digit sacks and stays healthy.

He's only 25 years old, and in his one healthy season he had 8 sacks. Now he's on pace for a monster season in his second healthy season.

If he puts up double digit sacks this year I franchise him for sure. Make him do it two years in a row, and if he does that then he deserves the monster deal we would then give him.

I'm always sceptical when players surprisingly have their best season when it's a contract year.

If he keeps playing like he is right now..for the next 14 game (no injuries), then maybe. So far, his track record in health is looking like T. Crawford's and that's no bueno.

IMO, if he signs for a big contract with another team, we may get a 3rd round comp. I'd rather have that and keep working the drafts to get our war daddy instead of risking another T-Crawford scenario. To get a big contract, you have to demonstrate some level of durability/availability.

If he keeps this pace up by midseason, I try to get him signed. I'm sorry, but you aren't going to be a decent team for long letting all of your talent walk and trying to replace them with rookies. You have to have some vets on the team.
