It’s officially draft season now that the team has lost any hope of the playoffs. That being said some idiot had to come in here and start a thread about the current Heisman holder and likely best QB to fall within our draft pick range. I am that idiot.

I loved Dak since the preseason last year, but he regressed so markedly I can’t pretend I think he’s still a sure thing anymore. I’m betting he gets another year to try and prove himself, but if Baker becomes Brees 2.0 this is an opportunity wasted we’ll regret for a long time.

I’ve watched every game Baker has played and he keeps impressing me. I’m also a biased Sooner so I may forgive the personality too easily. One thing that’s obvious is he works at the QB game and while that’s all we heard about Dak in the offseason the results put those reports in serious doubt.

How many here would be for taking a long look at Baker? I haven’t been around here much so for all I know this may be a topic so overdone it’s lost its value to amuse. Still like to see the thoughts on here.

Haven't got into the draft mode yet but in late teens we might have Allen and Mayfield on the board

Allen has more prototypical size etc

Mayfield had talent but 'hot head' issues. Team visit interview etc will make or break

But if the scouts believe one of these can be a franchise QB then I would take that QB if available

Having said this, no way the cowboys do it

I like Dak and thinks he is the future QB. That being said I'm ok with taking Mayfield if best available player. Going into the season with Dak, Mayfield and Rush we should be able to find a QB. Competition is always good and one will become trade bait. I think Dak will win the job but I have no issues with drafting a QB

Baker is heinously overrated as an NFL prospect.

He's an ideal college QB that will struggle with NFL game unless put in the right system.

At OU he's had the best OL in the conference every season.
He holds the ball a second longer than average D1 QBs.
And his passing chart is all deep or short.
There is almost no intermediate routes that the NFL gives survives on.

He may be a solid career back up and even be a decent spot starter for a year or so but long-term he's not a starting NFL QB.
And you don't pay R1 pick for that.

Baker has great intangibles and confidence. That will help him but it may also break some team's heart as he will push the envelope and take crazy chances.

All that said, I am NOT totally out on a QB in R1.
Not a shot at Dak but moreso because that insurance never hurts and you can trade the guy later if need be,

Dallas does need a legit back up QB of some sort given the shots Dak took this year.

I don't see much in him at the next level. He's undersized and not a great athlete to make up for it. Russell Wilson is undersized but he is probably the best overall athlete at the QB position in the league. Sure, there is Drew Brees but Brees is the exception, not the norm for all the other 6'1" and smaller QB prospects over the last 20 years. Plus you factor in that he plays in the Big 12 and that conference has had too many busts at QB - they all play in QB-friendly offenses vs. terrible defenses.

Your last sentence got me. What do you mean take crazy chances? Baker Mayfield is the most efficient passer in collegiate football history. He doesn't make many bad decisions. Where did you come up with this analysis?

I saw Baker play his first collegiate game live and have seen him no less than 20 times total.

Baker runs around with the ball in one arm trying to find a WR which has led to a number of fumbles in his career.
He has tremendous faith in his OL and will extend plays forever.
That doesn't generally work in the NFL.
He plays very similar to Tony Romo with a gunslinger mentality that most NFL coaches can't handle.

Where he goes will be very important.

He would be a nice fit for the Saints as a back up for Brees taking over that offense in a season or two.
The accurate passer thing is very overblown.
Look at the top 10 list. Not many guys on it that did a thing in the NFL.
Baker has run a system that is a mix of quick/short passes and fake/play action pass stuff that is well down the field.
He doesn't sit back in the pocket and hit intermediate routes.

But Baker is tough as nails, will take hits to extend plays and is far more Tony Romo than Johnny Manziel on the field as his 3 yards per carry rushing average will attest.
He obviously has to mature.
NFL QBs can not give defenses more reason to hit them.

Here is a Name i want everyone to keep an Eye on "Bryan Schor" He's going to be the next big Div 1AA QB to come in to NFL and Make it. He reminds me of Grappolo but has the Moxie of Romo, Probably won't get drafted until late or be PFA.. Buts he's got Enough of a NFL arm, Accurate, can mentally pick apart a defense and knows where to put the football on most route i've seen him throw *Back Shoulder, Fade, inside slant with LB bearing down on WR*
