NFL TV viewership takes heavy hit again in 2017

There's a simple explanation for this but the answer is a bannable offense.
So let's continue to ignore the elephant in the room.

Well, it's probably not due to any single factor so you could try to mention some of them that aren't bannable.

If I am correct in what you are referencing then the overwhelming reason doesn't explain why viewership declined in 2016 by 9%.
that is exactly when it started......CK didn't play a down this year..........DUHHHHHHH

The overall drop is 20% from highs in 2015 and that is substntial

i stopped paying for the nfl package this season due to the cowboys being what they are and the nfl being what it is and I simply cant afford it on my fixed income

The outcry and threats of no longer watching started this year. If there were any last year, they were few and far in between. It cannot account for the drop on it's own because there were similar rates of decreased viewership in spite of vastly different levels of "outrage".

2017 might have been when you started paying attention but the protests started with the first protests in 2016........the Dallas shootings, the cop socks, the election, the riots had a lot of people stirred up

The quality of play is way down from the 90s, and the rules are ridiculous. Young QBs are just atrocious, and the spread offenses are painful to watch. Plus, nobody practices anymore, so the tackling is terrible, too.

The PC police got hold of the NFL. It's doomed.
The product is almost garbage. I very rarely watch football games outside of Dallas, and only watch Dallas due to the emotional invest. Games, even playoff games don't compel me anymore. The league pandering to the causal fan has ruined it

Last week it seemed every stadium throughout the league was half full as they showed them on tv. The decline is real. The quality of football, stupid rules changes, horrendous refereeing etc. the list is long. The league will never be the same. Sadly.

20 years ago, I could teach my 6 or 7 year olds the basics and they could enjoy watching the NFL.

Today, you have to teach them the basics at 6 or 7, then spend 3 years un-teaching them basic things like what a "catch" is in favor of the league's evolving interpretation of it. Then you need another few years to make them understand why you want to do whatever you can sack to the QB before he throws the ball, but the only legal place to hit him is in the junk.

Being outside of Cowboys country, I think this past season is the most I can remember them being televised on local channels.

Ratings are estimates so it could be that even more people have quit watching the NFL than what the ratings say.

and it is also possible that more people are watching, you don't really know.
all I can say is that the people Nielsen monitor have dropped out a little bit by small percentage .
with the protests, the Pink Shoes ,the sidelines girls, the overall poor product ,the dirty laundry, the suspensions and other things it is a less enjoyable product than what it used to be.
plus there are no really great teams just a few that are a little better than the others.
it's kind of like they're all bad.

what we see in the Super Bowl and playoffs are the best of the bad.
Add to it the refs fixing games and taking over games by calling bogus penalties or penalties that really don't need to be called. People do not want to see the refs. Why the league can't see this is what amazes me the most.

Half full? Quit exaggerating. Saints stadium was full and very loud. Rams had a lot of empty seats mainly due to the stadium being 95,000 but they only have 60k or so available for each Rams game. Until they get their own stadium. So that doesn't really count. Chiefs stadium was very full. Jaguars filled theirs pretty much, too.

Arrogant commissioner and too many arrogant owners. For all of Jerry’s faults…he’s rightfully concerned about this. Too many of the other owners have that ‘we’re the only horse in town’ mentality. I think that’s a terrible business mentality as the working class has less PTO than ever in the past 50 years and now there’s more alternatives when it comes to sports and entertainment. That means the fiercest competition ever for fan dollars. And the owners and commissioner just bristle at the notion of this being a major issue and would rather make lame excuses that do not make any sense.

I'm more inclined to think that they owners are pricing the product beyond the reach of regular fans.

There are too many other entertainment alternatives available for everyone these days.
Goddell is like the Kevin Bacon character in Animal House on the sidewalk saying... "All is Well...."

How much has the pricing increased in the past 3 years though? And TV ratings are down as well why NBA ratings are up. Too many KPI are down and you can no longer blame it on online streaming or whatever other fairy tale they like to spin in their favor.

It's a league that saw season ticket holder attendance go up despite the introduction of PSL's during the Tagliabue era.

Basically, they are running out of plausible excuses and sooner or later will be faced with the truth as to why the NFL has declined. Unfortunately, it's going to be too late.
