I know, and even if he was, I would not stop a position coach from moving up. Was just pointing out that I think you can, assuming a guy is under contract.

If Eberflus leaves for a D-coordinator job and quickly builds a top-10 defense, then we’ll know.
 
I see this as non issue because this is Garrett last year. Let next HC coach pick his own OC & DC.

No, the team can block a move of a coach under contract unless it is from assistant to head coach.

The rules changed a few years ago.


LATERAL OPPORTUNITIES
  • Assistant coach to Non Head Coach opportunities
    • Note: “promotions” to coordinator level are NOT promotions under this policy; a coach is either an Assistant Coach or a Head Coach, period.
Edit: Eberflus has an expiring contract and is not subject to being blocked.

Teams retain exclusive rights to an Assistant Coach who just completed the final season under contract until:

  • The Tuesday following 15 days after the final Monday Night Football game of the regular season, if the Assistant Coaches team is not in the playoffs
  • The 3rd Tuesday after the Assistant Coaches final playoff game (including Super Bowl), but in no event later than the expiration date in the coaches contract.
  • This 3 week exclusivity period CAN be waived by the coach’s team.

I don't think he will stay. Eberflus should be smart and leave. Anything he does is going to be credited to JG as being a "Master Genius" for choosing him for DC. We all know JG is not choosing his assistant coaches. And then this will mean another wasted 8-10 years of JG head coach and many more years of mediocre Dallas football. Eberflus will go to a sorry team and turn around the defense and he will look like a genius for doing it and become a head coach somewhere in the league. Meanwhile, In Cowboys country, JG most likely will be fired already and our next puppet head coach will be Linehan. We will still be stuck mediocre for the next 5-8 years because that's what Linehan coaching ability is. He proved it in Detroit. Dak, Zeke, our offensive line studs will be old and end up like Jason Witten, hang on to the promise Jerry keeps saying and what most Cowboys fans keep believing "We're one year away".

What kind of season do you think it takes for Garrett to be fired? Not making playoffs? Losing record? Implosion?

Do you think there is any teeth to the possibilities of Belichick or Saban? Reputable people around both have said the Giants job is the one both might be willing to move for. With Belichick, his legacy is set so he really doesn't have anything to lose. He would get a bushel of money, and since he likely is losing both of his coordinators and supposedly has a rift with Brady it would be the perfect time for him to start over. High draft pick, a team that has no problem spending money on free agents, ownership that stays in the background....it is an enticing option I would think.

In Saban's case, he definitely could sit in Tuscaloosa and continue to win simply with better talent than anyone he plays. However, there is always the caveat with him....he failed in the pros and looked like a jackass they way he left. Guys like Saban think they can succeed anywhere, so undoubtedly there is still some desire to prove he can succeed in the NFL.

It is a problem.

It is amazing that a team that prides itself on not employing "progress stoppers" has a big one at DC.

We will never win a world title with Marinelli. I am sorry to say it, but it just is not in the cards.

But we will see him again, in the draft room, doing a fist pump for us drafting a no talent draftee this coming April once again.

That isn’t making it clear to him that they don’t want him. He could still end up the DC here. Marinelli is contemplating retirement last I heard.

The defense the last 4 games was better than good. Your continued hate is disgusting.
 
Eberflus is an unknown and is overrated IMO by fans here. I'm okay with him leaving.

Marinelli needs to go regardless. Hire Kris Richard and let him hire/name his defensive assistants.
 
The only shot at keeping Eberflus is Marinelli retiring. I don't know how attached he feels to that ascending unit in Dallas, but a new gig with a new HC means 4-5 years of new contract.
