New? Right. This is “new,” me saying we’ve had insufficient talent. Jesus.
The problem has never been the coaching. You homers keep making excuses for a unit that can’t pull its own weight for whatever reason. I guess I just have higher expectations and won’t settle for mediocre. We’re different that way. Go Cowboys.
And the "insufficient talent" will never be sufficient enough. They could devote the next three drafts to get studs on defense and it will not play itself out as teams cannot just talent their way to winning all the time.
They can nail this upcoming draft and get the replacements for swing tackle, a linebacker and there will be some other area that pops up that he cannot handle.
Look at Zimmer. He has probably the most talented defense in the league from a talent perspective. That did not seem to help them out Sunday, did it? They were out-schemed and out-prepared by a superior coaching effort. It can happen. But when it happens over and over again, there is a problem.
Garrett has only shown one speed. You can put him on a ten speed or a turbo charged motorcycle, he is still going to skid off the road eventually because he can't drive and manage what he is working with. He is not over-achieving. He is under-achieving.
This is a year to year league, where the right break with talent, whether it be injury, trade acquisition, free agent signing or draftee can change a teams fortune in a second. You cannot say the Eagles did not overcome adversity.
The one thing that matters is consistency on how players are deployed, prepared and also managing their personalities.
The only consistent thing Garrett has shown is that if things break just about right in terms of adversity, he can win a division.
That still leaves those darn playoffs then the stakes get higher and the pressure gets turned up.
There is a reason he has failed in practically every single win and in situation in his coaching career.
