I've read this suggestion a couple of times. Thoughts?

I believe they will draft a Swing Tackle in the 3rd or 4th Round this year and add another Veteran in Free Agency. Hope is that they find more than the guys they had this year.

Chaz Green was a 3rd rounder and we saw how much good that did. That Oline doesn't need someone to develop as a project, they need a fix or we can kiss our offense goodbye for another year, and God help Dak!

I'm sure Martin could manage at OT but his wingspan is smaller than most or all NFL OTs.

He has the perfect build to play Guard.
wow X of all people to fall for the short arms/wingspan BS. "all NFL OTs" when I had already pointed out Joe Thomas who is far from alone in havijng this 'nebulous' condition. Now when talking about a T-rex like costa that is a different story

I don't know who comes up with stuff like this but I wish they would stop.

Yeah, I agree. I hope using Martin as a swing tackle is nothing more than just chatter. Could Martin do it? That's not the point. The point is we screwed around with the O-line last year and it took 6 or so games before the line started to gel. To move an all-pro G, and one of the best in the game, to LT if Smith goes down again is absurd IMO.

That's why I've been saying in the Draft Zone - get a OT in here in the draft - one of the first two rounds.
Solve a potential problem now.

You're exactly right. Remember how Jerry Jones said we didn't need a better Oline because Romo was so mobile?
Romo ran for his life for a long time and took a beating for it because the Cowboys refused to build a better Oline for so long.
Now the Oline is starting to show problems again and last year when Dak wasn't running for his life, he was taking a beating.
Here's hoping they don't make the same stupid mistake with that Oline all over again.
Like you said......draft a good OT and get him in here this year!
And DON'T wait till the 3rd round and draft another Chaz Green.

Green played well in place of Tyron, my issue with him is his health. If he could just stay on the field we would have the swing tackle we need. Bell on the other hand, cant play guard or tackle, the door is -----> that way. we need a LG plain and simple!

.....Use Zach Martin at guard but he's also the swing tackle if Tyron or Collins goes down. My thoughts on that is a big hell to the no!!.

If the option is moving Martin to LT and taking my chances with a guy like Looney or something at RG instead of Chaz Green on that edge, I do it.

Garrett loves to say position flex. Never mind if the player can’t play any position let alone several. It really is amazing. They may have ruined Green with that nonsense. Jones as well. I agree with you 100 pct. novel approach - draft Ts to play T and Gs to play G. Maybe have 1 or 2 guys that can sub in elsewhere. Martin is one of the best at his position. Keep him there.

I started a thread a month or two ago asking if this coaching staff ruined Chaz Green. My take was the knock on Green was he could never stay healthy not that he couldn’t play. Most saw him as a serviceable backup T in 2016 when Tyron missed a few games. I thought it was a bad idea to try to move him to LG when he had never played that spot at any point. Footwork and technique is night and day compared to T. Of course he got hurt, was moved back to T and got no reps before the Atlanta game. I can’t put his all time horrible performance just on coaching but he was now trying to suddenly switch back to LT on the fly. Now he is probably mentally shot. I just find it hard to believe he went from a competent backup T to turning in the worst performance ever by a Cowboy OL. Should have left him at T. I realize Z. Martin might be the GOAT AT G but just leave him there.

Looney and Green should not have to be options at all!! Draft a T or a G or both. I say **** or get off the pot!!

In the Atlanta game Green gave up 4 sacks from the LT position in the 1st half before they benched him and brought in Bell, and Bell was a swinging door as well.
Plus like you said, being injury prone doesn't help matters any either.

I think the offensive line is a position group that is often misunderstood. Too often, we fans seem to think that all OL positions are close enough in skill set requirements that they are interchangeable. That’s simply not true.

Zack Martin is arguably the best guard in the NFL. But that doesn’t mean his skill set at guard will translate to either Tackle position. The pass blocking skills at guard are completely different than tackle. That’s why I don’t see Martin as anything other than a guard.

.....Use Zach Martin at guard but he's also the swing tackle if Tyron or Collins goes down. My thoughts on that is a big hell to the no!!. Move the best G in football to tackle if the need arises?/!! Then what? Move Green or Cooper to RG?!!!How do you like the looks of this... Zach Martin (LT), Cooper (LG), Freddie (C), Green (RG), Collins RT. INSPIRING RIGHT!! Can you say, only one piece of a once great O-line remains in their natural position, Freddie!!! Please Mr Paul Alexander get this O-line right!!

Do one of two things: (A) get Tyron's back right THIS off season and stop ***** footing around or (B) draft a fricking T who is starter quality expecting big T o have continued problems if we keep ***** footing around the issue'

Good God how many people does it take to screw in a light bulb!!!

I agree. It would be a mistake. I believe the best answer is always move as few guys around as possible. That's why I thought it was a mistake to move Collins to RT. I would have plugged him in at LG and found another guy for RT, a guy would would be more comfortable there. But when you have no cap room your options are very limited.

Everyone would like Tyron's back right. They didn't have the magic wand for that in the last offseason, probably won't find one this offseason. Even beginning last year, they called it something to "manage".

As for drafting a starting quality T, we'd have to use the 1st if we wanted a likely starter for this year. I don't see it happening. Other problems.

We should get another T, but if we end up with a better backup G than T, moving Martin out to T should be considered. Decent guards are easier to come by than decent tackles.

Finding players that can play multiple O-Line positions isn't unique to Garrett or the Cowboys, and is not in and of itself a negative idea. There are limited roster spots, and having players that can back up more than one position is actually a big advantage for a team. The problem with Green wasn't that the idea of position flex is an inherently bad thing, it's that he was the wrong player for it.

I would consider drafting an OT early. If that player can start out at Guard it would make it a better value pick. If not they could play him at RT and move La'el back to Guard.

It will be difficult to find a quality free agent backup OT because quality players will go where they have a chance to start.

In the draft a 3rd round pick or later is unlikely to be ready as a rookie; therefore they probably need one in the top 2 rounds for a good chance at getting a player that could play OT this season.

Yep, I like the idea of drafting a T early. This isn't a deep draft for the O-line. Wynn or Hernadez early? I think Wynn could play either T or G and had a solid senior bowl. We tend to pay attention to the seniors

I think an OT is in play at #19 and an OT may be BPA at #19.
