Well, its a better option than putting Chaz Green back in there in the event of another Tyron injury. Zach played OT his entire career at Notre Dame. He is far more capable and competitive than anyone else we have backing up Tyron, and G is an easier position to fill than tackle. Plus, we are about to drop 90 million on Zach. Its a high price to pay for a guard with no positional flexibility.

You have to think of these guys in terms of their cap hit and relative contribution to the goal of winning football games. We lose games all the time where Zach was amazing b/c he plays a position of secondary importance. You just need somebody who can do the job........someone like Ron Leary, for example, who will be commanding a lot less money. I have mixed feeling about having the most expensive G in the history of the NFL. I love Zach but I think you can get somebody to "do the job" for a lot less.

I think an OT is in play at #19 and an OT may be BPA at #19.

And move Collins back to G ? Its kinda silly for a team in our position to draft a guy in round 1 whose not going to see the field accept in the event of injury.

How many first round picks do we "need" on the o-line for our coaching staff to be able to run an offense?

Finding players that can play multiple O-Line positions isn't unique to Garrett or the Cowboys, and is not in and of itself a negative idea. There are limited roster spots, and having players that can back up more than one position is actually a big advantage for a team. The problem with Green wasn't that the idea of position flex is an inherently bad thing, it's that he was the wrong player for it.

Seems to me they should have seen it, although Green played reasonably well in relief at OT in 2016, and did a reasonable job in the 2017 preseason at OG, so maybe it wasn't as easy to tell at the time.

Larry Allen was the absolute best OL I ever saw play; and thus really is not in the conversation. If I remember correctly in the modern era he is the only player to be ALL PRO at both TACKLE and GUARD.

I like Isaah Wynn as a guy who has played all 4 positions LT, RT, and both guards. They actually had him working at RG at the seniur bowl. Very flexible and had a great senior bowl. He could be a fix at LT as a swing or LG. Depends on how the team values Cooper. I don't think fans are high on him but some fans aren't high on Cooper but some aren't high on any player wearing a Cowboy uni

I think the offensive line is a position group that is often misunderstood. Too often, we fans seem to think that all OL positions are close enough in skill set requirements that they are interchangeable. That’s simply not true.

Zack Martin is arguably the best guard in the NFL. But that doesn’t mean his skill set at guard will translate to either Tackle position. The pass blocking skills at guard are completely different than tackle. That’s why I don’t see Martin as anything other than a guard.

Could he play tackle? Probably
Could he be as good at tackle as guard?
Not likely
We need a tackle, seems like best solution is just get a tackle. Not mess up what’s working to fix what’s not working

LA was special and elite at both spots and probably could have been elite at DT too

This kinda gets into the Zach debate. How much more value is an NFL average G from the top 2 or 3 Gs in the league? Do you want a G to be one the top 5 paid guys on your salary cap strapped team?

I agree you have some parameters. I wouldn’t take a q.b or RB, probably not a CB either. But an OT I would consider because I value the swing tackle position and you can always groom him to replace smith if his back continues to be an issue

I’m no doctor but in general, back issues don’t get better with age. Smith is a young man but we could very easily be needing to replace him well before a rookies contract runs out
I hope not but having an option available is just smart
I just think with a few exceptions the draft is best when you just take the best players and not draft for need
