It would be moronic to hand him $17.5M and then do a LT deal with him the following year. The Cowboys should know what they have in Lawrence and either pay him or move on. I suspect he will get the tag and LT deal will ensue.
The Tag was a way for a team to keep a star player from hitting Free Agency for a year or two but the team had to pay the premium

You don't use the Tag price as the floor for longterm deals unless the player is game changer like Von Miller or JJ Watt

Tagging and THEN signing him is just burning cap space..... if he won't sign this year then he won't sign next year....... we have Irving, Martin, Dak and Zeke coming and they should not think they can use the Tag to get maximum dollars

If he won't sign at 5/70m with 42m gtd then he will never sign........take the comp pick and spend the money on guys that want to stay in DAL and not milk every dollarn after one good year......not even a great year

I get your concern. It really depends on how the structure of the contract is. Either way, I'd love to have he, and Irving back. If we draft a 3 down 1 tech, it will help the whole defense. Linebackers can focus on zone coverage, instead of being first to meet the RB. It's going to be an interesting off-season, with so many variables.

He and Irving are almost locks to be back
No one is giving up 2 rd 1 picks for Lawrence or a second rd pick for Irving

And as much as I would like it, were not taking a real 1T DT high because we gave idiots in our FO

He is an absolutely horrific negotiator.

I guess that explains why we end up paying players well after they are gone the majority of the time.

This is a real real problem in terms of the general success of this franchise.

Newsflash: Stephen Jones is not a cap genius.

I know this will frighten the children, but they need to know.

Perfect Example: JAY RATLIFF, MILE AUSTIN, CRAWFORD, DEZ BRAYNT all got paid....none of them produced after getting paid.

History tells us DLAW will be one of the above, one good season with injury filled seasons is exactly what Jerry Jones always pays for. The Jones pay for past performance NOT future performance

Let some other team pay DLAW 17mil, Heck the Dolphins paid Ndamukong Suh $114mil,.,. what did they get....180 tackles and 15.5 sacks in 3 years.

These NFL players stop playing after they get paid

But we can do whatever we want in free agency. Every year. Thanks to his genius.

So we have that going for us.

Which is nice.

Like the Skins with Cousins, if you tag him and he has another good year, you’ll be paying more than 17 million a year. He’s already better than Vernon, and he’s always been a high effort guy, even when injured. You also have to consider the message sent to all your other guys and potential FA targets.

If you perform, we pay you....period.

Your best bet is to sign him long term to lower his cap hit. Eating that franchise number lowers what you can give Martin. Outside of him there is no pass rush in dallas. You simply can’t afford to lose him.

Better than Vernon isn’t saying much. Just because the Giants old GM was dumb enough to over pay for a DE doesn’t mean we should too.

He really hasn't handed out a sizable bad contract since Dez/Crawford in 2014.

Crawford I get the criticism for (although he's only missed 3 starts in the past 4 years).

But with Dez, what were you going to do? Hard to let one of the league's top WRs walk when the window is starting to close on your franchise qb. He got virtually exactly the same as Demaryius Thomas.

All of the larger contracts ($5mn+) go to guys who are clear starters (except for perhaps Scandrick), with the only two who are really over the hill are Scandrick and Written. Guys like Carr and Church were let go.

He also said they were going to get a Zach Martin contract done last offseason. Said it was their #1 priority. We know by now that what front office people say to the media is not what they say behind closed doors.

Size is not the issue. The issue is the team's ability to get out of the contract without negative impact.

You can take one look at Williams' contract from just a year ago to see we are not very good at getting value. He basically has a roster spot, mainly because of the team's cap situation and the negative repercussions from cutting him.

The Eagles, for example, have been masterful at signing players and being able to move on quickly if they choose to do so.

Taking a 17m cap hit is intentionally wasting cap space RIGHT NOW instead of having 8m in dead money in 4 years........your worst nightmare is a 17m cap hit some time in the future so instead you take it now when the cap is 40m lower

That is not smart GM'ing

ps- the Eagles are 10m over the cap
