So the Cowboys easily cough up $6 million/season for a one-hit wonder soon to be 27 year old and slow "has been" free agent receiver, but they are hesitant to want to pay more than $2 million/season for their very own 24 year old young stud and one of the best interior DTs, David Irving, in the whole league?

Rule of 51. Only the top 51 count against the salary cap in the offseason. New additions replace the least expensive player. As it currently stands, that is $555k. In that case, only the Cowboys top 4 round picks would count against the top 51, replacing said lowest player.

Therefore, only the Cowboys first 5 picks would count against the salary cap. Netting against the lowest 5 all at 555k is $2.348 million.
My bad.

And I was reading spotrac wrong anyway. The 4+ mill accounts for the draft.

Hurns will still cut into that pretty hard.

Put a wet rag on your forehead. It's going to be okay. Why am I saying this to you? There's worse out there!

Williams only leaves in a trade, IMO. His salary for 2018 is guaranteed, and he's a 5 year starter, with better overall stats than Hurns. Nevertheless, their stats are similar.

Williams - 5 years, 80 games, 230 receptions, 3,359 yards, 20 TD's - averages per game - 2.9 rec, 42 yards, 14.6 ypc, 0.25 TD's
Hurns - 4 years, 52 games, 189 receptions, 2669 yards, 21 TD's - averages per game - 3.6 rec, 51 yard, 14.1 ypc, 0.4 TD's

But, Hurns has missed 12 games in 4 seasons, and Williams has never missed a game. Williams is also a much, much better downfield blocker, which is important in the Cowboys scheme. Don't let the fact that Hurns is a shiny new toy distract from how reliable Williams has been for the Cowboys.

Having said that, Hurns is more of a hands catcher than Williams. Adding both Thompson and Hurns may indicate that Sanjay Lal is having some influence on the team. It is possible that the Cowboys are going to revamp their pasing offense this year, and maybe Thompson and Hurns are better fits for what the Cowboys will try to do under the guidance of Lal.

I hope these signings remove the possibility of drafting a receiver in the 1st round, which would be an awful choice.

http://bleacherreport.com/articles/...avior-can-be-a-distraction-says-stephen-jones

"It's certainly visible to anyone who watches our games. Dez is certainly a fiery guy who plays with a lot of emotion both on and off the field. Sometimes, that can be a distraction. It can be a distraction for Dez, it can be a distraction for other teammates. We just have to really get our hands around when you put all the full body of work together where that's headed." - Stephen Jones

We agree on a lot of things it seems, but "disgust" is a reach man.

Texas--- do you see this signing as a better #2 and/or also leverage for a Dez pay cut or trade?...interesting signing....the deonte kid they signed ran a 4.31 at combine ...so they can use him as an outside burn threat maybe?..looks like cowboys are trying to get Dak more weapons
4.31??

FRISCO, Texas – Two days after taking a free-agent visit to Dallas, wide receiver Allen Hurns has agreed to a two-year deal with the Cowboys.

Hurns, 26, was released by the Jaguars on Tuesday after starting 42 games in Jacksonville over the last four seasons, posting 2,669 receiving yards and 21 touchdowns in four seasons. Hurns reportedly drew interest from other teams, including the Jets, who were expected to visit with him this week.

It is, but Dez + Ridley + Hurns + Beasley + Thompson + TWill is even more exciting.

New cap hit
12.5 + 6? + 6? + 3.5 + + 2.5 + 3.25(guaranteed)
Kinda pricey for the whole squad
Notice how Dez is about equal in cost to Hurns and the 19th pick as Ridley.

The new players have incentive laced contracts. Not as large as they originally sounded. Deonte Thompson's is really $1.8 against the cap.

Speed is only a factor when your offensive strategy is "get open". Real coaches scheme, if you're a pro WR you're fast enough.

Williams is now trade bait...HELLO SEATTLE and Earl Thomas. I TOLD YOU GUYS last night...TWILL to Seattle if we signed HURNS...watch and see if it happens.

TWILL isn't even good. He does not have football IQ and he can barely catch. Romo made him better than he was.

I disagree about Hurns, he holds several records at Miami, he’s produced, young, competitive, and talented. He’s a football player. I would tap the brakes on Irving being one of the best in the league, I agree that he can be great, not sure what his deal is. I hope we keep him and he turns into a great player, just not sure what the FO’s opinion is of him.
