I would trade Zack Martin for a 1st and 2nd

Anyone remember when Frederick pulled a prank on Martin, after he got drafted, on him on the Ben & Skin show (2014)? I wish I could find an active audio file for it, but the links are dead.

Anyway, Martin agreed to make an appearance with Frederick to a kid's bar mitzvah for $25,000 each. Then the prank caller (acting as the kid's dad) kept asking for weird things like he and Fred jumping out of a cake and other silly things. At the end the Father said he'd pay Frederick $25K and Martin $5K (because he's not a known Cowboy). Martin scoffed and said no. Then the prankster bumped it to $12.5K. Martin scoffed again. I know people are going to roll their eyes about this, but the way Martin acted about it as a guy who hadn't even started a game was something that stuck with me since that day. You really had to listen to that audio.

"He's about principle" is probably what someone would say. Well, whatever that "principle" is, it surely played a part in a deal NOT working out last offseason. When the hell has Dallas ever been unable to extend a player they really, really want? If there's no deal this offseason, then that means he's asking for the moon.

He's now the highest paid OL in the league at 15.5 a year. So what should Martin get paid? 16? 17?

You paying 17 mill a year for a guard?

What does that have to do with what I said?

And you should know better, but Solder plays LT and LTs get paid MUCH more than guards. The more you know!

Name a time when a team traded away the best player at his position in the league so that best player in the league would be playing against that team instead of for them. Teams don't get better trading away the best player at their position they get worse.
.

Hmmmm...probably not the best at his position, but he was the best player on the entire Cowboys team. His name was Hershall Walker, and that was before the salary cap.

I wouldn't do it unless the pick was high enough that I knew I could get Nelson, Wynn, or Hernandez. Those guys would be great replacements at a fraction of the cost for the next 4-5 years, along with the high 2nd round pick.

but it won't happen....even the teams that hope to draft a guard in round 1 wouldn't give up their pick for Martin and his salary.

Depending on how high the 1st and 2nd are, and depending on how much money he wanted, I could possibly agree with that.

Yes. I would do it too. We will for sure find another great ol with that first round pick and have another cheap 4 years instead of paying alot of money.

Thats smart Business and building thru the draft. We invested 1 first rounder and got back the same plus 5 years of great play plus a 2nd rounder. What else could you wish for ? Maybe 2 firsts:cool:

I don't think Martin is being unreasonable, its more about the market than Martin having an ego.

And when is the last time an OG was traded for a 1st and 2nd? I can see it happening for an LT but not a guard.

he deserves what he gets, i just have never liked the "i'm letting my agent handle everything" approach. It just means "I'm juicing you for as much as humanly possible, and there's not hometown discount or playing to my sentiments". That's fine, and I dont begrudge him, it's just the kind of position that leads to exploring options as well imo.

“Ridiculous” contract? Or fair value for a top NFL guard?

Some of you need to realize that just because the Cowboys don’t know how manage their cap doesn’t mean the player wants too much $. Some other team will gladly take Martin’s “ridiculous” contract and make it work on their team just fine

Sometimes you have to overlook the small errors in the joke.

Or...

I am really old.

What is this obsession with draft picks? Let's just trade away everybody with talent on this team so we can get more draft picks.

You're going to have to use one of those picks, likely that 1st to replace him... so we're trading away arguably the best guy at his position for a 2nd rounder. No thanks.

Not ridiculous, but still a very large amount of money. Nothing wrong with being hesitant.

Franchise tag doesn't discriminate between online positions.

But, if you want to just look at guards, Norwell just got 13+. That means you are looking at least at 14 for Martin.

And the point here is, NE let a player who became the highest paid olineman walk.

At the most difficult position to play on the line.

Yet you want to keep and pay Martin to be the highest paid guard, at a position that is much more plug and play.

That has everything to do with what you said.

Hear me out....

Zack is one of my fave Cowboys but....he's playing hardball and will want a ridiculous contract.

We cant have all our cap dollars tied up in linemen, I wouldn' sign him anyway for the contract he wants so why not throw some trade bait out there

1st and 2nd or two 1sts...whatever

Congratulations. You just picked up Morris Claiborne and Jacob Rogers. Enjoy.

I'll even be nicer. You just picked up Byron Jones and Gavin Escobar. Was it worth it?

Maybe he picked up another Martin and Sean Lee? Both significantly cheaper.

In an alternate universe somewhere JJ uses draft picks on players that already have been drafted to “re-draft” them to rookie contracts

Hypothetical question for you guys that have concerns over the line taking up too much cap room (which I disagree with based on how the offense is run). What is an acceptable percentage of the cap that should be allocated to the line and ultimately to Martin? Also, keep in mind that the bottom half of the roster only accounts for about 7-10% of the cap any given year.

You said to another poster that even the pats let good players walk, like Solder.

I statef that Solder cant hold Martins jock strap. The pats wouldnt have allowed Martin to leave if they were in our position.

You then said Solder is now the highest paid "are you paying Martin 17M"

Of course not, it also had nothing to do with wuat I said. Why even ask the question, because its not feasible that Zach will get $17M. It's just a silly arbitrary question.

Norwell got $13.3M to move states and was part of a massive bidding war. $13.3M-13.5M is likely the mark we are looking at. Am I paying $13.3M-$13.5M AAV for a player that might be the best guard we've ever seen, who has no history of injury, and we know for certain fits our blocking scheme. Yeah I'm paying that.
