Question for LVE fans

I live in Boise, watch alot of BSU games, and went to his pro day this week... Generally, I am not a fan of a LB at 19, but given our need, I think he would be a high upside, high floor pick. He has exceptional athleticism for a man his size (6'4" 256). You just don't see guys his size run, change direction, and backpedal so effortlessly. Plus, he has good instincts at MLB and was good diagnosing plays. His weakness right now is taking on blocks, which is certainly a big concern at NFL level. That is part his height, part technique (using his shoulder, not his extended arms), and part playing strength. But even at 256, he has the frame to get stronger and add bulk without losing speed. To me, the upside of this guy is Brian Uhrlacher. And the downside is Karlos Dansby.

As for your questions: He is a day 1 starter at MLB (Jaylon to SLB). He is a 3 down LB, and upgrade over Jaylon, because of his elite coverage skills (pushing Jaylon to the bench on 3rd downs). No concern about his lack of experience. His production as a first-year starter was off the charts (141 tackles, 8.5 for loss, 4 FF, 4 sacks, 2 INT, 5 PD; by comparison, Rashan Evans had 74 tackles, 13 for loss, 1 FF, 6 sacks, 1 INT, 3 PD). And he's very smart, so his lack of experience should be overcome relatively quickly.

Final point: he was not heavily recruited out of high school (he played in an 8-man program at a small Idaho school) and walked on to BSU = he is self-motivated, self-made, and hungry. RKG
Thanks for the info and post

I take Evans over him at 19.

I like Evans too.. Just don’t know enough about his coverage or haven’t seen it. He’s an athlete though so if he can’t cover it won’t be because he doesn’t have the athleticism.

I like Evans too. The games that I watch of Bama, he seems to be always around the ball. I have not seen LVE play so I can't make a fair comparison.

The flash plays you see here... Carpenter was not a physical player. That’s what hurt him.

This guy is not afraid to play physical. He’s not there yet when it comes to taking on and shedding blocks but this is a talented player.

A 6’4 linebacker blocking pass lanes in the middle of the defense that can flip his hips like a DB? Yes please.

My main concern with him........one year as a starter. My question(s)

* Do you see him as a day-one starter (ILBer)

* Are you concern about his lack of experience ( similar to Jaylon Smith )

* Do you see him as an UPGRADE over Jaylon

Just so you know, I'm completely on the fence with this kid. A lot to love about him but he scares the hell out of me. Imagine if the success of this pick impacts your job.
1) yes,but then again,,, he's bound to suffer the singe of getting his butt burned.
2)ya,well,, if you couple the complete casing-liner together on the professional level ( barring our #38 don't lay a rookie season ending ' howdie-doo' on him thru incidental contact) I really think that dude is a Saturn v rocket launch.
3) indubitably, indubitably &doubler so o_O,,, not that #54 ain't gonna' teach that kid a thing or two along the way during both their meteoric trajectory of awesomenesso_O ,,,the dude is huge, wraps up& kills the tackle like the 8 ropes of death straight outta' a1950's slant eyed jap sci-fi octopus monster, head on a swivel constantly engaged in attack mode?,,,, SHEESE! I know I need lasic/glasses these days,,,but,,,I ain't G D BLINDo_O

I have not been blown away by Roquan Smith so if LVE is the next best or best player on the board at LB I might take a chance on him...would you me more inclined to take another player in an area of need if you could get Josey Jewell, Darius Leonard, Malik Jefferson n the 4th? Is there that much of a drop off from LVE to Jewell, Leonard, or Jefferson? I know we would have to shift Smith around...but these are all possibilities.

Fair questions.

I think what teams are seeing is a player that is on the rise. He does lack experience, but the season he did start he made an impact and he's only going to get better with more reps. If he stayed at Boise St. another year and duplicated his season (or came anywhere near it) he'd be a Top 10-12 pick next year, which is why he's on the radar of teams picking in the bottom-third of the 1st round this year.

Because he's white? Carpenter didn't have what it takes inbetween the ears. LVE is a bright kid with a much better work ethic and drive then Bobby. Being dismissive because he's an athletic white guy is foolish. They are night and day in regards to character and personality.

Carpenter sucked, but it wasn't because a lack of smarts or laziness.

I don't know where you're getting that from?

They say it's 20 % physical and 80% mental. Bobby wasn't physical that's a mentality. He wasn't a dog and not nearly as good as he was made out to be at ohio state.

I don’t know about taking on blocks, but in this video, he sure knows how to avoid them and make plays. I’m all in as he can play the middle and be a great backup/future for Lee.

Evans doesn't have the cover capabilities of Smith or LVE.

I've been a Smith admirer for awhile but I think LVE is going to be a better LB. I'd take LVE at 19 and a S at 50 likely Bates who is a FS type. IF Gregory gets on board then that's it for D as far as must needs. You can certainly take a player later at any position and should if they are at the top of the board. After R2 they can go for TE and WR. I don't see a need to draft an OL this year unless it's someone like the Army kid.

I think we might be shot down at either R1 or R2 in the above but there are plenty of guys who belong in the top 50.
