Barry Church on Hurns: He's a great slot receiver w ability to play outside

Don't surprise if this kid is our 2018 leading receiver......Dak's fav target ( Laurent Robinson 2.0 )

Read a tweet couple weeks ago from his former Hurricane QB (Morris) that he's a QB's dream. Always asking how or if he can run a route or play better or get open a little quicker to pick up a few extra yards.

Barry Church on Allen Hurns: ‘He’s a great slot receiver with the ability to play outside’

Jacksonville Jaguars strong safety Barry Church recently joined Dennis & Cowlishaw on KESN-FM 103.3 ESPN to talk about the Dallas Cowboys, the possibility of cutting Dez Bryant, and their newest wide receiver Allen Hurns.

Among the highlights of the interview, he spoke about Hurns’ natural position in an offense, how he is in the locker room, and more. Thanks to the folks at Dallas News for transcribing the good parts.

What’s the scouting report on former Jaguars teammate Allen Hurns?

Church: ”What [the Cowboys are] going to get in that guy — he was definitely one of the hardest workers out of our locker room last year. He had a lot of bumps and bruises throughout the season, and he didn’t complain once. He just went back out there and did his job, and did his job really well.”

“To me, he’s more of an inside slot receiver who can also play outside. It’s going to be interesting to see how they put him in there just because you guys got a great slot receiver already in [Cole] Beasley. So, it’s going to be interesting to see how they do him.”

More then likely out of position.
There's a track record

A lot slower than Robinson. A lot more expensive for us too. But yeah, good chance he's our leading receiver.

Williams is now second string. If that.

I wish he had said why. Normally you want the tall guys on the edge. Hurns is now our tallest.

Maybe Barry was thinking the big pic but he's a professional player (a good one ) who no question, know more than me. So like I said earlier I'm take his word 100%. Remember he said he was more slot guy that can play outside. I take that as what you're kinda what you are saying coz of his height he can play outside and likely will but Barry thinks his real strength is skill set of a slot. So I went back and looked up the Y.........

A Y receiver will be lined up between the split end or the flanker and the linemen. The position on the field is determined by which of the other receivers the Y receiver is paired up with. If paired with a flanker, the Y receiver will be on the scrimmage line. If paired with a split end, the Y receiver will be off the line of scrimmage.

Y receivers specialize in either catching the ball and being an outlet receiver or blocking and being part of the running game. As an outlet receiver, the Y receiver will catch the ball should the quarterback not have the time to find a receiver. For a Y receiver in the running game, the priority will be to block and open a path to the runner with the ball.

I like having 6' plus receivers in the 3WR set. I hat when they trot Beasley out there, who can run all the routes but only runs the option route. He can run deeper patterns but he can't get open on them. So his bread on butter are 5-7 yard ins and outs.

Think about this ........if his best season was outside, yet his former teammate is saying he may be a better slot, that's pretty damn good. I agree his base position will probably outside but I'm guessing as the season progress, we'll see him playing both. Other words, I looking to move him around, keep the D guessing. be foolish not to.
Not sure church really knows his strengths
Church wasn’t there when he played outside and I suspect he really hadn’t paid that much attention to film on hurn
Team mates usually have nice things to say about others but church played one year with him
That said I like the signing and think he makes this team better
To me his strength is really route running. He is a good route runner
