I think he is probably playing for his legacy. Right now, if he retires, he is a borderline HOF. I think he wants to leave when he feels like he has the stats to be enshrined in Canton.

Witten is 100% in right now.....guaranteed

The NFL Hall of Fame is kinda lax..... they do 6-7 guys every year and love adding Cowboys for tickets and ratings

Yeah last year they added JJ? Lol, I still don’t know what that was about.

Another 5 seasons maybe a stretch. I can see him going for 2 more if his production picks up this year. Otherwise JJ may have to have a “offseason meeting” with him.

Dallas Cowboys tight end Jason Witten isn't planning on ending his playing career any time soon.

Per Jon Machota of the Dallas Morning News, Witten would like to keep playing for at least four more years.

"Hopefully I can play until I'm 40," Witten said. "Just taking it one year at a time."

I hope it's NOT with the Cowboys. As far as skills are concerned he shouldn't be on the roster now.

I am sick and tired of Witten and have been for years. It makes my eyes bleed seeing him trying to run. His usual 3 yard outs and routes that are 2 yards short of the 1st down are pathetic. He does nothing well anymore. Anyone who said he is a good blocker is lying. He is a terrible blocker. He has no speed. Might be the slowest person on the team. What is our fascination with this dude? He should see the field about 75% less than he does. He hinders our offense so much.

Borderline HOFer??? LOL I hope for your sake that was posted in jest. He' caught the second most passes for a TE in NFL history. He's a surefire first ballot HOFer if he retired today.

If the HOF love Cowboy players, why are some of the best Cowboy players in history still not in it?

But is he a first ballot? As TE, it is very difficult to get in. I don't think any TE made it as a first ballot until Gonzales and Gates get in.

If the Cowboys doesn't do anything special, I think Witten will probably have to wait a while until his name is called. That can be dangerous because of the next group of TEs in this passing league that could possibly have a better resume than Witten as an individual player and team success.

I really don’t get the fascination for drafting a TE. Besides the fact that no rookie TE would subplant Witten as the starter, Dallas has a variety of good TEs already. Haven’t we proven through a plethora of drafted TEs during Wittens reign, that drafting a TE is a wasted pick over and over again.

Witten- all around well rounded vet that ranked 7th of all TEs last year. Beating the likes of Jimmy Graham, Kyle Rudolph, Jared Cook, B Watson, etc.. yeah, he’s lost a step but he still has sure hands, finds ways to get open, and blocks better than most TEs in the league. Are we just wanting to replace him bc he’s “old”?
Hanna- is an anomaly, but really hasn’t been giving a real shot at the starter role. Sounds a lot like the rest of the TEs that we’ve drafted and gone on to have long careers elsewhere. But he plays a ton of ST and blocks well for a ‘run dominant’ team.
Swaim- has looked good in the very limited playing time he has.. here again, when has he had a chance to prove he could be better? We don’t have a clue what type of player he could be. So let’s just go draft another one I guess. SMH. Reoccurring theme here.
Jarwin- apparently the coaches thought enough of him to stash him on the practice squad, then call he up late in the season. A big young TE to develop into a possible starter down the road. Again.. talented player, but when will we see these talents? But let’s go draft another one:/
Gathers- the enigma that stunned fans how he was able to stretch the field last preseason before he got his bell rung. Major upside and I personally believe could steal some snaps from Witten this year. But hey, let’s waste another draft pick

Now if someone wants to argue that Witten needs to share some snaps with some of the other talented TEs on our roster.. well, I’m with ya. But Witten isn’t a horrible TE by know means, even if he’s in his twilight years.
agreed..finally someone seeing things for reality and not emotional eye test they used from last year..

No TE has been a first ballot yet. He doesn't have the catches Gonzales has or the TDs of Gates.

I want Witten to retire today, but there's no doubt he's a 1st ballot HOFer.

He's 4th all-time in receptions and will likely crack into the Top 20 all-time for receiving yards this season.

I’d like to think that management and Jason Witten are on the same page when it comes to doing everything possible to improve the team, regardless of personal feelings.

If Witten wants to try playing until 40yo, fine. But if any sort of sentimentality on the part of Jerry and/or Garrett plays a role in keeping him on the field as the #1 TE, when there might be a better option who isn’t being given enough preseason and/or practice snaps to develop, then that indicates the problem’s with management — not JW himself.

So, Gavin Escobar and the 2nd round pick we spent on him were not an attempt?

There is no "problem in sports" here. If anything, NFL teams have huge cap incentives to replace older, more expensive players. The problem for Witten bashers is that they aren't seeing what the coaches see every day. The guy is a warrior and its going to take a talented rookie to replace him.
Lol no Gavin was not... funny how you don't mention Bennett, Fasano who started once they got away from Witten's shadow and lack of playing time. For the record I am no Witten basher. I am a Witten throwing the facts. If you don't like them move along....also for the record Escobar is not in the same class as Henry so hardly someone to begin the Gates/Henry transition. Good day
