Oh please. He was compensated quite well here. It's not our fault he's going to get a 1 year prove it deal.

This completely, 100%, ignores the point made in the post you quoted.

Why quote something if you're not even going to speak to the point being made?

If the team had designated him as a June 1 cut I assume he wouldn't have been allowed to workout with the team before that? Do you know?
He's effectively immediately a FA and no longer with the team. They just decided to not do it that way. They obviously wanted that 8.5 mill right away, for some reason.

What I believe it was, or at least what I believe I read, was that if they waited until June 1 to cut Dez he wouldn't have counted against the salary cap at all, but since workouts would have started by then, if Dez got hurt in the meantime they would have been stuck with the full salary. If this is accurate, technically the team could have simply held Dez out of workouts until June 1, then released him. Admittedly that would have probably not been viewed very favorably by players or fans.

It seems the timeline may have been to wait until signing another receiver, then try to trade Dez, and when they found no takers they decided to release him.

You need to find better sources.

I'd say a combination... Too close to the draft and being that this is Dez's first time in free agency, he's also taking time to weigh his options.

No offense, WG, but in your heart of hearts do you really believe that Dez and his camp would not be leaking who wants to sign him? Wouldn't it be better for him for teams to know that other teams are interested? Agents do this all the time even when there is zero other interest in that player.

Did he do that out of spite?

I don't consider waiting until signing another receiver and then trying to trade Dez to be indications of spite. It's part of how business works in the NFL.

I have heard that the Cowboys didn't want to have Dez working out and getting hurt and binding him to the salary for this year. That's a plausible explanation. But I don't think that's it. Maybe it is as simple as that, but I sort of doubt it.

Can you say what was wrong with what I wrote? I said specifically said things like "I believe" and "if accurate", so I indicated I wasn't sure. Your post doesn't indicate you know even as much as I do.

I agree that's plausible, assuming they would have been forced to allow him to work out. My questions on that point are that if its true they could have designated him as a June 1 cut in advance of June 1, at what point could they have done that, and if he was so designated, would they still have to allow him to work out?

Thanks Corso. Judging by this, they actually did Dez a favor by releasing him when they did.

Well no... for Dez, it would have been the same as now. He'd be cut and a FA immediately and the Cowboys get more cap relief, but they don't get it til after 6/1.
Dez would be in the exact same situation as now.

This is a reasonable assumption and would explain why now.

What going on here us that people are trying to equate Dez not signing with Dez must suck this prove the cowboys were right to cut him.

The only thing that will prove that us the 2018 aeason, if Dez goes to a new team and have bad numbers, then the Dez sucks crowd was right. But..........

And for the Dez is great crowd it's just the QB that sucked, Dez needs to return to 2014 production levels. Should be interesting how it plays out this season.

You'd have to show me evidence of where they took three weeks after Hurns was signed to "trade Dez."

Otherwise, it simply sounds like another excuse someone created to make them look less bad than they do now.

yup, typical nonsense thread.
dez hasn't signed because he didn't start thinking about other teams til he walked out of that office.
it took him 24 hours or remove cowboy for life from his social media profiles.
some teams won't touch anyone right now as they are too focused on the draft.
what deal he ends up with and what he does in 2018 will be telling.
being a free agent for 7 days is not.

Exactly this.

Pay no mind to the fact that the team screwed him by releasing him so late.

"He must suck if he's not signed already! Great move Cowboys!"

Yeah, this debate wont be over until the 2018 stats are complete. Not in the offseason with assumptions and opinions on either side.
