i was just doing a thought experiment here... how high of a pick could we get for Zach Martin?
We are going to have to pay him and he will be our highest paid offensive lineman along with highest paid player.
Why not trade him and draft to some dumb team like Chicago, Cincy, LAC. This years draft class is the for guards is the best it’s been in years.
Why not get a great player at a fixed 5 year cost if we are balking at paying him?
Again I love Martin but if their is value to be had it is something to consider.

then we will have to draft 2 guards.

\Well, other teams could just say, why should we pay Martin if the Boys aren't doing it, and they just go ahead and draft a guard. Since the asking price in return will be too high for them.

This isn't totally off the wall. That's why we are always against the salary cap because we pay everyone big bucks. He might be the best guard in football but he's still a guard. You pay DE's, Corners, and LT's in this league, not guards.

If we draft a LG at 19 I'm gonna puke. While needed, we can find one later.

Martin can play G or T.

Martin easily gets a first. Definitely could turn around and draft another guard with it, but short term that hurts the OL and is not Dak friendly. I think our big expenditures next year are signing 2 out of the 3 between Martin, Lawrence and Irving, with my money on Martin and Lawrence.

PS....if you can't get a first, there is absolutely no reason to trade him.

Well I haven't seen it yet. He should have pulled a LA and moved when Tyron went out. I would have rather seen Green get blown up at Guard than LT.

I love Martin, but I'm just afraid we will be so top heavy in Oline salaries that we won't be able to field a defense!

I disagree. You pay guard if your offense is built on having a great offensive line. He means less to a team with a bad line. You need to keep winning on both sides of the line.

But how can you afford all that is my only hesitation? And still pay for a defense?

I think it's a fair question whether we want to spend 13mil a year on a guard, even if he is the best guard in the NFL, and likely headed for the HOF. Are guards worth that kind of money? G really is not a keystone position for a team.

And can we spend so much on the oline?

I would, but I'm a guy who thinks olines are a solid investment.

A guy who will likely be the highest paid player at his position is a guy it probably makes sense to franchise. That price would be smaller than his yearly cost on salary.

Another option is to draft a G high, and think about letting Martin go next year. Basically trading off cap hit versus draft pick. I do like interior oline in the first. Like our guys, they tend to be day one starters, and don't get hurt often.

We'd certainly get 3rd round compensation for him if we let him go in FA.

Who was the last player of Zack's caliber who got traded?

I would say a 1st and a... and another and a...
