Trade down for Earl Thomas?

He was the unquestioned leader and best player on that defense outside of maybe Bobby Wagner.

He is the best safety in the NFL, and he's better right now than anyone in this draft. By a good margin.

By the time he's done, so will Witten, Lee, Tyron, Zeke, Hurns, Beasley, Williams, and 10-15 more players on this team most likely.

Play for now.

Your ranking him #1 is your opinion but none of the sites that have ranked safeties last season agree. They all have said that the past couple of seasons he's had some injuries and has missed some games, that comes with age and playing for a while. Not a spring chicken anymore.. It's also a fact that he built his name on a very good defense and what he can or would do on a defense not as talented is pure speculation because he won't have all that help. Also all of the other players you mentioned the Cowboys did not give up additional draft picks for them in their contract year or were 29 at the start of the season. Trying to use whatever players may or may not be around in 4 or 5 years is a foolish to compare with Thomas. EVERY team has player turnover. You can wish for Thomas all you want but don't think everyone agrees with you or even the Cowboys agreeing with you. I'm sure the Cowboys have thought of everything I've said and more, things we don't even know about and if it turns out that the Cowboys don't trade for Thomas it will be because there were more possible negatives than possible positives.

That's ridiculous. He's better than any player in this draft right now. Best safety in the NFL.
No chance give me Landon Collins over him. His skills have eroded the past two years. He isn't the same player he was and he is too old at this point. Heck Budda Backer brings more to the table at this point. Thomas has become an injury prone player and his money could be spent elsewhere imo. Don't get me wrong he is a good player but not at 9 mill a year. There are enough injury prone players on the def side no reason to add another to the list.

I'd make my selection at 19, then at 50 call Seattle and tell him, you can have our third round pick for Thomas, if they say no, draft a safety at 50.....I just don't see the big demand for Thomas from other teams, so why bid against yourself, Thomas wants to be in Dallas so if Seattle won't take a third round pick, then wait for Free agency next year for Thomas

Makes sense.

Thomas would have lots of teams interested if he wasn't so adamant about only signing long term here. For those teams, he's a one-year rental. I think he plans to play in Dallas in 2019.

But I'd sure like to have this year with him if he'll be reasonable on the contract.

He missed 7 games in 8 years. Want to compare that to guys on this team?

Age for a safety isn't as big of a deal as it is for corner, receivers, or running backs. Good safeties often play well into their 30s.

I didn't know that. Was he suspended in college?

Once again, dlaw, has not dirtied for pot in the nfl...The deal here was that he was prescribed a drug that was taken off the allowed list in his rehab for the back surgery..He dirtied for it, and it was a PES category so they escalated to suspension..Now saying that does not mean they wont use it to negotiate, just that its in the Cowboys best interest to negotiate a contract so they can spread it..

Earl Thomas has become the Rico Gathers of trade bait; if he’s on the field for the Boys, then we’re SB bound.

There’s a coupla reasons why the Seahawks are shopping ET. He’s lost a step and is locked-in for too much money.

Come to think of it, kinda like a certain WR.

This is not a positive financial trade for the Cowboys..Question, will this trade put us in the sb this year or next?,

Just like the thought that we dont need a pro bowler at every position on the offensive line, We dont need a probowl safety to compete for a superbowl...Especially when you are overpaying for him, and with the other needs on this team..And defense especially..We need the two..Even if you can manufacture more twos, we need the picks to finish...If we were closer, with more cap room, less need, id be on board!

Because he doesn't want to be there. He walked up to Garrett in front of reporters after they won in Dallas and said "come get me."

They can't franchise him. If they keep him, he leaves for nothing.

They got rid of Bennett and Sherman, and Chancellor is likely going to retire. They are in a defensive restructuring.

i know it's opposite what they're plans our, but why can't they franchise him?

And some play until 30 or 31. Again there have been so many players that were thought to be so good and when they left those teams where they made their name they weren't nearly as good because they didn't have the surrounding talent they had when they made their name. I still think it's to risky to count on a player in his contract year on a team where he built his name surrounded by a lot more talent, who is turning 29 and has injuries the past 2 seasons that might end up as only a rented player and after all of that have to give up draft picks for him. The Cowboys are not a safety away from going to the Super Bowl and the risks to me just outweigh the POSSIBLE rewards.

Yep...the second round is where the TE's and injured players get picked. Are there any injured TE's in this draft? :)
Why would we pick a TE in the second.I think te Cowboys have alrdy proven they will waste it, at that position..We have four signed right now!

No kidding, this is more of the new car mentality..They tried to make a deal, it didnt make finc sense for the Cowboys, its over!

Its simple The tag is 17 mil i believe..Meaning the cowboys are carriying that much against the cap, until they sign a contract..

The franchise tags design is set so that a team can buy time to get a player signed..in the event it doesnt happen the tag stays in place, for the season..Just because you can use it, doesnt mean you should..

I was being facetious...though I realize that doesn't always seem obvious on written posts.

I was being sarcastic...though I realize sarcasm doesn't always come through on written posts.

Sorry my sarcasm scanner analyzed that a response n kind was necc..lol..

I cringe every time i see a mock with a tightend on it anywhere..The cowboys need to get real, integrate rico and swaim into a middle of the field attack with the tightends, and watch how it opens up your run game and the outside for your receivers..

Witten cant or they think he cant duet...But they need to find out if they can or go in a different dir..This gives dak another security blanket and gets your tightends ROI..

I through out Collins and Baker based on age. If you really want to talk about the best safety in the league it starts and ends with Reshad Jones who is the same age as Thomas.

Wondered if they didn’t try to get terms done with D-Law dueling my last season. Just feel it out. Lol.

But I think he wants to get paid big bucks.

He ended what..top five.He deserves to get paid..I agree that the back, and the slow dev should be used to negotiate, But we have been screaming about a pass rush since Dware was cut, he is home grown and playing to potential. .Lets get it done..And move on.
