Because he was the top LB in the draft and would not likely be available to us. Not many are going to confuse the talents of Smith with that of LVE or Evans. I would have drafted Edmunds if I could when there were a few picks ahead of us. But I don't fault them for staying put in this R2-3 heavy draft. LVE was a good pick there unless you liked Evans more. Last year R2 WR was better than R1. I expect the same this year. We'd have drafted Smith if we'd had the picks for it.

Buddy they were never going to draft anybody but Lve...That is skeery..

Dlaw turned out good..three years later..

Well, dlinemen don't usually spring out in their first season. Not to mention that he showed flashes early in his rookie season. He played fairly well in the playoff game against Detroit, as I recall. So, I'm willing to see how LVE plays out for us. I'm also interested to see how the rest of the draft plays out.

You are prepared to be surprised, in a good way. I've posted this before, but appropriate again. I live in Boise. Went to BSU home games. Went in person to LVE's pro day... Being as objective as I can be, this guy is, at a minimum, Karlos Dansby. At a maximum, Brian Urhlacher... Simply put, 6'4" 256 lb guys do NOT move like this guy does. He is the best coverage MLB in this draft. His backpedal is effortless and fluid. He opens his hips like a CB. And with his 6'4" height and wingspan, 39.5" vert, and great range, he closes that window in the middle of the field. Makes it so hard for QB's to fit passes into that middle seam or throw over him. In today's NFL, that is huge... Further, I believe it was proven last year that Jaylon Smith is a far better OLB, than he is a MLB. Let him come off the edge and cover TE's. LVE's instincts at MLB are so much better than Jaylon's. Plus, he weighs 256 and has room for another 10lbs without losing any quickness... Where LVE needs to improve is take on. But not because he's not physical (forget the Bobby Carpenter comparisons, they are wrong and lazy). He IS physical. But he is so athletic, he often tries (and succeeds) to slip around blockers. He will get coached up on that... Also, the draft is a projection. And LVE's athleticism is off the charts. At 256, he ran a 4.65 40. And add to that a 3 cone of 6.88. That is the SAME as Calvin Ridley and better than DJ Moore (6.95). Last, he had a vertical of 39.5". That is the SAME as DJ Moore and 8.5" higher than Ridley. For a MLB. Think about that and let it sink in. He is an athletic freak, and an ascending player... Finally, he is a really good kid. High school championships in 8 man football and basketball. He is a self made player. Walk on. Team captain. He will not stop working. He is the anti-Dez... Fellas, do not be disappointed. You will love this guy.
Maybe he will grow on me.

Frankly..

what I don't want to do is remember this 2 years from now when Ridley is raining TDs on the league..

and we are alternating Vander Esch in and out of the lineup because he can't cover NFL RBs or TEs coming across the middle.

I love the Urlacher comparison...I am not that familiar with the dude but started watching video of him recently and I literally said, "wow...dude looks like Urlacher"...if he's anywhere close to your write-up, we have a potential pro bowl starter...right on!

Lol. Covering RB's and TE's are what he excels at. If you could pick at him about something, this is not one of them.

Well, LB was one of the biggest needs that we have, and I suspect that we may not be done with LB yet this draft. Like I said, I'm curious to see how we play out the rest of this draft. There are still 6 picks to go, and there might be interesting players that fall into the UDFA territory. Plus, like I said, I haven't got a problem with us going LVE. I know it's a player that some on here don't want, but I think it will prove to be a good choice. Especially considering, aside from Lee and maybe Hitchens (who isn't here anymore), how abhorrent our LB play was. Remember the stretch last year when we didn't have Lee? That was AWFUL defensive play during that stretch, if you can call that defense. Regardless of wherever you put LVE, he adds a level to this defense that gives us more talent at that position. Plus, like I said, his quickness is good for a defense that needs more speed/quickness.

Actually, the comparison that I've seen on NFL.com was that he's similar to the earlier version of Karlos Dansby who turned out to be a very good LB.

Sorry dude, making racist comments are not acceptible regardless if you are a minority or not. It just shows what kind of a man you are if you think you can denegrate someone elses race because you think you are able too for some reason.

While I disagree with his views on LVE, I think he was talking about being in the minority of his opinion on LVE.

Please don't inject race or religion and try to be civil. I hate to bench people. Some can no longer reply to this thread.

Against Boise State competition.

Not exactly a Notre Dame strength schedule.

Sorry.

To be fair, there are some aspects of playing certain positions that transcend the size of the school and the competition in which they play. I think covering the players that he did would be one of them.
