It really is baffling that all of these changes are occurring under his watch. It's like his own pillars are falling out from under him.

It's not even remotely baffling. Changes are happening with every team every year, including high profile ones at times. Witten has been playing 15 years - something like 10-12 years longer than the NFL average - so how would it be baffling he is retiring, especially if he is getting a chance to move straight into the MNF booth?

Witten is a man that has to provide for his family and the rest of his life. I think his decision is based on doing that. ESPN made him a deal that he could not resist and get's his career in football lengthened for quite some time without worry. Teams have no problem cutting players when injured, not performing and so forth without any concern for the person's future; it's a business is what is said. Many NFL players go broke because after football they cannot adjust. This man is doing what is right for him and his family is my opinion.

Without him we were nothing. We were rolling at the time he was suspended and the season went into the toilet the next 3 games without him. Our entire offense revolves around him and the running game. With our average receiving corp we’ll be even more dependent on him in 2018.

Well, Dak was only looking for Dez and forced it too many times. Yes we need Zeke to be the 2016 Zeke. And Dak to be the 2016 Dak. When he moved the ball around to all wr's. Hopefully we can get a TE and or WR today that can get separation and run a route.

Just look at what Jerry did to the careers of Romo and Witten.

Almost criminal.

So it's official... He did blindside them... I still have nothing but love for him though. It is beyond time.

Mods. I don't understand why my thread (in which I had privileges to post) was merged into this thread (where my privileges to post were removed for whatever reason an hour or so ago).... Strange. Whatevs. Good day. It's sunny outside.

True though, they did it to Dez and now Witten has done it to them. What goes around, comes around.

He and Jerry have a meeting today. Stephen also said it on the radio.

I have read that. I also read Stephen saying he knows nothing about this, but that there is a meeting scheduled between Witten and Jerry.

If this were true, there would be video of Witten stating this, or one of the team officials confirming this.

But even if Witten is thinking about it, how persuasive is Jerry?

However I do find the comment by Clarence Hill to be the usual from the local press. His loyalty to Dez is showing in his attempt to say these things are alike, and this is a done deal. He also wrote his tweet as is this is a done deal. it may be, it may not be. But at this point nothing is confirmed, but a bunch of people are taking it like this guy is history for this team.

I prefer to hear it from people whom would know and not just speculate.

Witten is an all time great and old school player........ the team will miss him more than these disrespectful morons trying to troll this thread will ever know.

He did not blindside them anymore than they blindsided Dez.

Wonder if these same Dallas fans will tear down Dirk (Mavs) when he decides to retire. Saying..."he waited to long, couldn't do anything anymore, cost us games, yada, yada." Or only their hate is for Cowboy players.

First, I want to say thank you to Jason Witten. A legit future ROH member and HOFer. Sometimes, we as fans forget to appreciate how rare it is to watch the career of a HOFer. Those kind of players don’t come along often and #82 is one of those.

I also feel a sense of frustration seeing a great Cowboy player retire without ever winning a ring. Without even playing in a conference championship...never even close. That’s a commentary on this FO more than Witten.

Put my name on the list of those who think we need to add a TE. The Rico Gathers love eludes me. He’s been fitted for a gold jacket by many here which is laughable. Witten has dropped in performance, but he was still better than anyone else we had.

Just heard Witten is retiring. May need to Target a TE now. Oops already a thread.

I personally suspect Blake Jarwin may be the one among the current choices that is most likely to step forward this year.

Welp.

FRISCO, Texas (AP) — ESPN is reporting that Dallas Cowboys tight end Jason Witten plans to retire after 15 seasons and join the network as the lead analyst for its "Monday Night Football" broadcast.

Citing sources it did not identify, ESPN said Witten planned to meet with owner and general manager Jerry Jones on Friday before making the move official. Cowboys spokesman Rich Dalrymple said the team had no comment.
