PFT: Report: ESPN offering Witten $4-4.5M per year

Silly for him to come back, has never been injured to the point of missing time. Why risk it now in yr 16, it's a young mans game and the wear and tear that he has endured for 15 yrs have to take a toll especially at the TE position. Get out now Jason, u have your whole life ahead of u.

He had to have undergone some auditions that made him the frontrunner for the job. Hope he takes it.

I don't get what he needs to think about... The option is very simple... get that $4.5M for the next 10 yr without taking a single hit to the body.

As much as I want Witten back for a 16th season this is a tough offer to turn down for him. As most are saying these gigs don't come around often and it limits wear and tear. There's a certain competivness among any athlete that plays this long which makes the decision tougher, but if I'm Witten there's two questions I ask myself. 1. Can I still play at a high level? 2. Is the team I'm playing on have a good chance at a Super Bowl this season? If either of those answers is no then you take the analyst position.

This whole thing is so funny to me. Witten, as legendary a player as he was, always struck me as one of the least entertaining guys in the locker room. I'm not sure what the execs see in him as the guy to helm the MNF broadcast, but maybe he's a lot more charismatic in the booth than he ever was in front of a camera with reporters.

How'd you like to be those other guys?

"Okay boys, we'll be in touch if Witten says no"

Great opportunity for him here. First ballot HOFer and slides right into a high profile NFL TV gig.

He's done.......

If Cowboys tight end Jason Witten plays football this year, he’ll earn a base salary of $1.05 million and up to $750,000 in per-game roster bonuses. If he accepts the pending offer from ESPN, he’ll make a lot more than that.

David Moore of the Dallas Morning News reports that the pending Monday Night Football offer to Witten would pay $4-4.5 million per year.

If Witten ultimately decides to keep playing for less than half the amount he’d make by not playing, the potential alternatives could include Kurt Warner, Rex Ryan, Matt Hasselbeck, Booger McFarland, and Louis Riddick. According to the Washington Post, each of those four candidates has been considered for the job.

Whoever gets the gig will be paired with Joe Tessitore, the new play-by-play announcer. ESPN has been working for months to find a replacement for Jon Gruden, who left after nine years to become coach of the Raiders.

Please take the job.

It’s an opportunity that may not come again for a long time. It’s a big gig and the money is great. More time with his family and works few months a year basically. He’s gotta take it.

Go for it.He deserves it. May even tune into a few games just because of him....

His salary is higher than what they say it is if I remember correctly. I was thinking he was slated to make $5.5 million this year.

I assume Witten is not planning on walking off with the restructure bonus for the deal he just signed. And if he did, I don't imagine Jerry doesn't go after him for it.

Though AFAIK, Jerry never went after Purple Drank for the bonus money he got. If you let yourself be publicly punked, don't be surprised when other guys do it to you too.

I'd almost like Witten to do it. Gangster.

Witten signed the Restructure, but the Cash has not yet changed hands. I'm guessing he told them to hold onto it until this thing played out. So, there is nothing for him to return. If he retires, then the rest of the total $6.5M goes away, as well as the future $19.5M. No cap hit now or in the future.

Thanks. That's what it should be, and that's what I expected would be the outcome, though I didn't know the money hadn't exchanged hands.

But if it hadn't, the talk about the FO not knowing that Witten was seriously considering retirement sounds like hooey. Guys don't sign contracts they intend to fulfill and say "you can pay me later".

Troy basically told him to take it

Um, he just had 4.75m converted in a signing bonus that he gets up front. He has 1m base salary and 750k in roster bonus. To me, that adds up to 6.5m. Last I checked, 6.5m is more than 4-4.5m. Like 50% more.
You don't even have the honor of admitting you were out of line calling me a moron....... not cool...... I never said he was going to making MORE....... I just said he was going to get around 5m per...... you are just making stuff up now to save face

And now you are even backtracking off of your own words.....what a weasel move

THat would be higher than almost every current announcer.

Gruden was among the highest at 6.5m a year but that was earned over a long time in the booth. Many of the big names are in the $500k to $2m range. With no experience it would be hard for me to believe Witten would pull that kind of money. One thing I saw said Romo was being paid about 1.5m by CBS. Find it hard Witten would get 3 times that.

I swear. Sports writers don't know how to do math. Witten is scheduled to make $6.5M each year for the next 4 years if he stays with the Cowboys. He won't make more money per year working for ESPN in the short term.

The attraction of the ESPN gig is that he will have more years of making money. A 10 year broadcasting gig making $4M per year is $40M. Four more years of playing for the Cowboys is $26M.
Yeah but none of that is guaranteed and most is tied to incentives after this year

We was never going to see that money ...... this was always going to be his Swan Song
