The issue I take with it is how can we set these expectations when all the experts analysts and handicappers don’t have us placed higher?

Hope springs eternal, as the saying goes. That's about all we have at this point, given the last 22 years...

What happened last year seldom repeats 100%, what happens if Aaron Rodgers goes down for the season? We saw what happened to the Texans when Watt and Watson went down. Just the uncertainty of what the new season will bring allows just about any team to be talked about as a "contender". I even heard one TV talking head say he expects the Browns to make the playoffs this year, and who knows? After losing Romo in early 2016, and going 4-12 iin 2015, few saw the Cowboys doing as well as they did.

Half of those 7 teams could fall way down, granted it's not likely, but as I said, it's to fan the flames of discussion, which it has, not sure it's really meant to be taken as a realistic expectation of the 2018 season...
There has to be a beginning point. I’m more likely to follow these analyst and handicappers than some homerish fans or haters.

And it’s all subject to change once the season unfolds but again you can’t be considered a serious contender without further evidence. That’s not of course going to keep fans from inserting their spin.

Of course but eternal optimism isn’t the analyst or handicapper you want to listen to.

I’m not discouraging fans to cheer us on but Cheerleaders aren’t who I look to for sound evaluations.

It's a good list and I appreciate your effort in putting it together. There are always other factors that play into the success or failure of a team. There are opportunities for the team to even overcome what people perceive to be mistakes by Garrett. I say "perceive" because there really isn't right or wrong, it's essentially a preference or an opinion.

What you've done is put a good list together that shows the team still had opportunities for success with Garrett as head coach, but Garrett still had a hand in the failure of the seasons as a whole IMO. Abandoning the running game, mismanaging the clock, poor use of timeouts, poor play calling, etc contributed to the team losing games that could have been won. Granted, with good execution even a bad call can work so there is no guarantee if a different call was made there would be a different outcome.

But I have a hard time continuing to have faith in a coach that consistently leaves time for the other team after the 2 minute warning when most fans agree our defense isn't good. An example would be early in the 1st half of the 2015 Atlanta game we got 1st and goal at the 1 yard line with 46 seconds left and 2 timeouts remaining. Garrett calls a timeout then we score on 1st down leaving Atlanta 40 seconds. They proceeded to march down the field with a shot at scoring a TD but settling for the FG. There was no reason to call a timeout. Let the clock wind down. The team was in no danger of failing to be able to run 3 plays from the 1 yard line if they let the clock wind down before the 1st and goal play.

It's my preference not to have a coach on the sidelines making those decisions because it makes it harder to win games.

P.S.
Yes, Rockport, I'm complaining because I am a hater.
Of course you are. Your character allows you no other option.

Opening odds to be the first NFL head coach fired (@betway):

Jason Garrett has been given a lot of time to make his mark with the Dallas Cowboys. A season without Jason Witten and Dez Bryant will focus on his face as one of the more seasoned on the sidelines. Can he pull it off, or do these odds have a point?

https://www.bloggingtheboys.com/201...y-to-be-first-head-coach-fired-dallas-cowboys

The only one that has to be persuaded or dissuaded is Jerry. It means zero, zip, nada what the oddsmakers think. They don't pay any coaches, they don't make any decisions. The same people that give any weight to this are the same people that probably would think there is something of value if the oddsmakers said Garrett is more likely to eat 3 eggs for breakfast instead of 2 or 4 eggs and that may have an impact on whether he is released.

We can only hope he gets fired. Something that should’ve been done in 2010.

If you truly want change to come fans need to root for several years of hitting rock bottom like with Campo and 5-11 years which brought about our only legit experienced and proven NFL HC since Jimmy.

Unfortunately that didn’t ultimately lead us to any better place. Most fans complained about Bill too. Lol

With our front office and dysfunctional situation Elite talent in the right places is going to help us more than an elite HC which surely by now most realize isn’t a reasonable expectation anymore with Jerry.

But instead fans are determined to try and reach the SB with this QB and defense hoping or expecting our HC to make the difference. Lol

Would you like to make a list of times we lost because of Garretts mistakes and lack of football coaching knowledge?
No, I’ll leave that to you, go ahead. Coaches make mistakes, I never said he was perfect. I can fo further back when Garrett wasn’t coaching and just point out Romo’s mistakes when it came to playoff implications. Would you like me to start in 2006 when he took over for Bledsoe? That would be the most logical.

Sure, then I can post his defenses for those same years and we can see who truly failed. The FO or Romo himself. A lot of people dont realize without him we would have been horrible for a longgggg time.

I already agreed with you that the icing the kicker part was on him, im not debating that but i am saying that is really the only tangible piece you are tying directly to garrett.

Everything else you are saying is nebulous and, depending on how much authority is delegated to the coaching staff, can vary depending on the team's setup. Just because the offense isnt more agressive doesnt mean that is bc of Garrett, maybe he told Linehan to make the call and trusts his coaching staff?

There are plenty of HC's out there that have completely different styles of control and they lead to varying results, both good and bad.

Back to the original point you stated that I disagree with, you don't have many tangible instances where you can say "Jason Garret cause this team to lose bc of XYZ"....and you can keep saying that the HC is responsible for the whole team all day long, which is fine but it is just a generalization.

You hate garrett, like a few other very vocal posters on here, and i get it. I don't hate garrett and i see a lot of great things going forward for this team. Its ok we disagree.

Never said the coach is responsible for the whole team. Why you keep coming back to that is strange. Im pointing out specific things that he either should be in complete control of or was and screwed it up.

I see certain positives going forward. Much of it remains to be seen, however. And lets be honest. Were happy about a few things going forward because its been so bad the last 20 years. And to see some good signs is a breath of fresh air.

But true to your blanket point about blaming the HC. Are you trying to insinuate that these good things are a direct result of Garrett? Now that would be hypocritical. And I certainly dont see you bashing people that give general credit to Garrett simply because he is the HC. Such as............"He led us to a 13-3 record" yada yada yada.

Has to work both ways.

Very nice, fair and well though out post :)

I understand why people don’t like him as a HC. I never said he was perfect or even in the top 10 coaches (although I would put him close). Andy Reid, Peyton, Tomlin...have all made calls just like you describe above that cost their team games last year and make bone headed decisions on a weekly basis but people around here still praise them, maybe they don’t watch most of their games, I dunno.

Anyways, you’re right, JG has made plenty of mistakes as have most coaches. I just wanted to point out that he has put this team in postions to get in the playoffs under some pretty bad scenarios and he was dealt a horrendous hand almost every time. Most coaches couldn’t overcome the challenges I described. Maybe a few coaches could have won a game or two more with Weeden and Cassel, doubtful. I don’t think any coach could overcome a QB with less than a 50% complettion rate, 3 INT’s (one of which was with little time on the clock and led to 7 for the other team). The back up QB’s, the bad defensive personnel the FO gave him...the list goes on.

Regardless, as I said, nice post and I respect your opinion.

you dont know me, you dont know how much i love this team...and you have zero right to make an assumptive comment about me like that.

You see that picture in my avatar? Thats my daughter when she was about 1 watching her first game with me...i have not missed a game since i was in hs, got married on the bye week becuase i didnt want to miss, plan vacations around the schedule and am as ravenous a fan as you will ever meet....i dont "roll with the punches" i just dont agree with the bs you guys are trying to spin around garrett.

Take your generalizations and assumptions about me elsewhere...I may be relatively new to this site bc they shutdown DC.com but i was big poster there for a decade....you dont know **** about me.

I took your exact words. "I am just happy to be in the hunt around the end of the season to make the games more fun". Thats all I know about you. That tells me that you are a ho hum fan that doesnt get to into the details and just wants to enjoy the games. Is that an insult? Now I am also seeing that you are overly sensitive. Cursing me out. IF you cant handle the conversations buddy, just put me on ignore.

Ill voice my displeasure whenever I feel like it. This is a forum for conversation. Maybe you should join a fan club or something.

Andy Reid, Peyton and Tomlin have made mistakes but also coached teams to SB appearances and generally had more success than Garrett. Two have won SBs and Reid has taken teams to multiple conference title games. That's why they generally get praised and mistakes get overlooked. Shoot, Belichick has made mistakes too.

I believe I specifically mentioned how bad the defenses were which the FO is responsible for which made it hard for Romo but also for the coaches.

I understand Romo had a very big role in getting us into those playoff situations, it would be dumb not to recognize that, but those who say the coaches “wasted his career” is nonsense. He was just as responsible for wasting his own career. One of, if not the biggest, part of his legacy will be he couldn’t get it done in big games. There were some he had a legitmate shot (ie GB and NY) but I don’t think any of those came down to bad coaching or Romo, we just got out played as a team.

Back to JG though, just look at the stuff he had to deal with, I think a lot of people forget that. 3 years in a row he had a chance to get us in the playoffs with a W in the last game of the season. 2 of those was with a backup QB (only lost by 2 in one of them) and the other Romo completely blew on his own.

its people like you that make me glad that i don't do more social sites online. Keep being a dick, it will get you far in life and make you feel much better about yourself.

And by the way, hope you have a great season enjoying the fact that Jason Garrett isnt going anywhere and there is nothing you can do about it.

LOL........Im retired at 47. Just sold my business 4 months ago. Im in southern Maine enjoying the 70 degree weather with my family on the beach. IM doing just fine. But its amazing how your cursing me out and calling me names. Who is the guy with the issues?

And as far as Garrett yah it really sucks knowing he will be around. And you can bet I will be complaining about it. Enjoy your benching.

Well, every year is different, you would think that sooner or later we's be due better teams, but that remains to be seen.

We're stuck with Dak for now, he's too cheap to bring in a veteran, even if one was available, and since he's got two years with the team, to start over again with Rush or the rookie would regress the team, which Jerry isn't willing do do imo.

Defense? At this point the defense doesn't appear to be top notch, but with so many new and young guys I wouldn't put it past the realm of possibility that the defense could be pretty good.

And I don't think many fans are expecting Garrett to be a difference maker, only that he's not that bad of a coach (debatable) and isn't the progress stopper many think he is.

I can understand their expectations, though at this point I don't share them, but I'd have to see how things shake out after pre-season, at the least, and maybe a quarter of the regular season before I'd have any firm expectations...
