NFL teams made more money but only because current contract not affected by ratings decline yet

What about the Fox Thursday NFL deal was signed earlier this year in the midst of all the chatter about declining ratings and lower ad revenue that still represented a 47% increase over the previous deal? 5 years, $3.3 Billion and that was a higher than expected price tag according to some. Not only that, but it's not even an exclusive deal as the NFL retained digital rights to the games to place them online in other places if they want. I know people want to hope against hope, but the next deals will also see an increase.
FOX Sports is in the middle of a huge upheavel with its parent companies and is willing to take on a loss leader with the Thursday Night package to push FS1 and stabilize the Fox Network

They are also getting an 11th game compared to 10 for CBS and NBC and they get to distribute their TNF and Sunday games to customers phones

CBS and NBC both lost money on the latest deal and came in with much lower bids

Those negotiations started a while back, not just when we heard about them. I am sure there was media optimism that all of the negative issues would eventually blow over, but as time goes by, that optimism will be replaced with a new reality that the NFL is no longer immune to the changes in viewing habits that most other entertainment sources have already been dealing with along with the various controversies directly affecting the NFL such as social, health, etc. related issues.

I have no agenda against the NFL and as a fan, I hope the ratings rebound. That said, it has enjoyed an immunity against the things damaging most other media and entertainment mediums and organizations, so at some point it was going to start affecting the NFL as well. I am sure the NFL owners have been aware of this for quite some time and are trying their best to prepare and position the NFL to stabilize somewhat before the next primary contracts are negotiated. It remains to be seen if they will be successful in stopping the decline or if they can only slow it down a little.
For the TV nets, it's a broader stroke than the NFL. They're fighting a losing battle against the internet and time spent viewing TV nets is declining and time shifting is increasing. And there is no solution but to try and keep the broadcasts of the games, promo other programming and let the internet competitors come in and take their share. The NFL might cut them some slack to keep the standard broadcasts. 17% of TV households rely on over the air reception as of 2016 and that has been on the increase. The NFL needs the nets to broadcast the games.

The demo above 45+ is not going to put up with the inherent glitches in streaming games and being forced to watch ads. Once people have been given control, you cannot take it back. I am looking forward to time shifting the Cowboys games this season for the first time. It's either that or I am done as that is not my idea of entertainment. If not for that time shifting element that I have found to be so prevalent with the younger viewers in their 30's/40's, the NFL would indeed be in serious trouble. They have succeeded in making these games almost unwatchable and a chore to watch. And this season, it is only going to get worse.

Because it’s familiar to us. We’re often too stupid or stubborn to change . I’ve seen what they have to do and it’s look like more hassle to me.

It’s bad enough now if we had bad thunderstorms and why I have alternate TVs ready to go with Rabbit Ears. I haven’t missed a Cowboy game in over 54 years. I’m not about to change now to save a buck.

TV is my #1 entertainment at home and an expense I’m willing to incur . I have 2 receivers and 5 Genies in my Sports Cave alone. And with AT&T I get Direct TV on all my devices Free with no data usage applied.

It's not because you and I are too stupid or stubborn. Not to be ugly, but $150 a month is simply nothing to me now. I understand that isn't the case for everyone.

And streaming is lackluster still. I prefer blurays because they are much clearer with better sound, too.

I can’t believe people are still with Dish/Direct or any traditional contract service in areas where high speed internet exists.
You are basing that solely on cost. There are advantages those services offer that you cannot get with streaming and I will put my DirecTV up against the consistency and dependability of the internet service all day, every day.

It is also ease of use and what someone is used to if money isn't the only issue. My older son dumped DirecTV and went Roku and while he is happy with the savings, the service is not comparable. But the goal was to cut the bill with 3 kids.

As for myself, I know there are other ways and more on the way but unless it comes down to my drugs or DirecTV, I ain't interested. And I am talking prescription drugs, the others are not available to even consider replacing. Hell, if it weren't for alcohol and drugs, I wouldn't watch any of this stuff.

Right. The streaming is all about saving money which to us isn’t an issue especially if there’s any inconvenience or interruption in service.

I stream sports all the time on the go but I’m not going to miss a play of the Cowboys due to streaming. That’s unacceptable. I’m either glued at home , at the game or at my best friends who has basically the same set up I do.

Just because I don’t attend all the games anymore I still plan my life around the Cowboys schedule and football season. Direct TV is a service I’m more than happy to pay and they often provide me free services when I complain:)

Something tells me the Cowboys domain as the most valuable franchise in sports isn't going to be in danger anytime soon.

Also, so much for the NFL is failing. Despite TV ratings being down on TV overall, they're still bringing in that cash.

A lot of that decline stuff is fluff for the media, the NFL isn't going anywhere, and will continue to make astronomical money.

Streaming sucks

It has lag and comes and goes and gets throttled .......I have no problems with HD Cable
I’ve never had lagging issues with legit streaming services (Netflix, Hulu, etc.) if you internet service is **** then I understand.

Oh hell no on losing a Cowboy. I haven’t had an legit service streaming issues but I keep an antenna around for those just in case moments.

Now when I had satellite I lost service if the damn wind blew the wrong direction.

I have Directvnow and the services are comparable to traditional Directv, while at a steep steep difference in price.

I hope the players union see this and get the players the money they deserve and the guaranteed contracts. That's far too much money for the players to not be getting more.
The players get enough already. What about the common man? He works for a company that has a wealthy owner, CEO, CFO, etc., and the disparity between incomes is much greater. Hard for me to be sympathetic for guys like Le’Veon Bell.

I don’t need it, but yes I could if I needed it.

I just don't like the lack of picture quality and other issues with most streaming. I have a 110-inch screen with Dolby Atmos 7.2.4.

I already complain that my Cowboys games are still stuck in 720p/1080i antiquity. I don't want an iffy stream as well.

It's because few humans can do what Le'Veon Bell does. Lots of people can do what the common man does.

They were willing to "loss lead" when they outbid CBS for NFC games back in the day. Did that pay off enough to come back for a 2nd bite?

CBS and NBC paid an average of $45M per game. Fox is going to pay $60M. Extra game means nada when you talk averages.

Who cares who lost? The winner sets the market and as the market setter, Fox will be bidding to retain their Sunday games when that comes up too.

The sky is falling though. I get it. Lol. Hope against hope is what I call it.

And that’s the bottom line. I’m glad there’s an option if your more cost aware.

But it’s an Expense I justify with my priorities in life. I’m like what else can I buy sports related . I’m a sports TV Junkie.

I currently have 5 Tv’s in Cave and looking to see how I can add another one. Each bedroom has one , living area and patio. Direct TV loves me. It’s just not an expense which curbs my enthusiasm. Lol

Plus thru AT&T I can record or watch any recording I’ve made on any device anywhere without using data.

They don't get enough. They risk their lives. Firefighters should get more than what they get. Teachers should get more than what they get. I'd put players there too. To fans like you you don't take into account how much they are damaging their bodies and their brains all in favor of OUR entertainment.

In comparison to NBA players they are getting robbed. A third tier player in the NBA will sign a 4 year 150 million dollar a year deal. A First tier in the NFL that isn't a quarterback? 4 years 60 million. And that's in the most profitable sport in the country and also the most violent. But because the "common man" gets 10 dollars a hour that means NFL players get too much money lol.

These arguments always kill me when the "common man" will side with the billionaire owner who robs their fans blind with overpriced tickets, crappy on the field product and and overpriced beer....all just to go against the athletes who are closer to being common man than those owners are lol.

Thank you. Out of the billions of people in this world......there's a few people as good as Leveon Bell and what he does.

But still dependent on the internet connection and that is not great in a lot of places.

Define high speed because the best I can get out of this cable provider is 24/2 and when the homes on the lake beside me are rented out, I have to change a band through the provider or it times out.

But I know as I write this, the nerds are working on something else to endanger TV and satellite in general and become billionaires.

I have never seen any RB do what he can do, it is really odd how he hesitates or stops and then just goes.
