Report: Marvel Wants James Gunn Back for ‘Guardians 3’ & They’re Trying to Convince Disney

by Haleigh Foutch
August 9, 2018

Another day, another development in the curious case of James Gunn‘s firing. On the heels of a united cast statement in support of reinstating Gunn from Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana and the rest of the Guardians of the Galaxy core cast, Deadline reports that Marvel Studios is also backing. Per the report, Marvel and Disney are having behind-the-scenes conversations and that Marvel is trying to persuade the folks at Disney to bring Gunn back into the fold for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

Disney fired Gunn last month after a series of old offensive tweets were dug up online by alt-right personalities. Since then, the entire Guardians cast has come together in support of the filmmaker, with Dave Bautista going as far as asking to be released from his contract in the circumstance that they don’t use Gunn’s script. Yesterday, we learned that Disney indeed plans to use Gunn’s script, even if he isn’t brought back as director, though the studio is in the midst of complicated exit negotiations.

According to Deadline, the latest conversations opened up after the cast letter but previous reports about the unlikelihood of Gunn’s rehiring mostly remain true at this point. The report notes that there’s “no clash or strong arming” between parties at the studios and that Marvel’s “11th hour approach” to rescue their franchise is a long shot. more...

Dave Bautista is willing to take a hard stance in support of fired Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn.

The actor, 49, has previously expressed his support for Gunn multiple times on Twitter, saying that the franchise isn’t the same without its original writer and director. But Bautista went further on Monday when he revealed he’d be opting out of the third movie if Disney and Marvel don’t use Gunn’s already completed script. more

I think he's ultimately going to be brought back.

Everyone makes mistakes in life, and if stupid tweets are the worst thing you've done, you're doing alright.

He said some vile, stupid things ten years ago. And has realized and apologized for the error of his ways.

I honestly think society is going too far in their Twitter outrage.

I have no idea what he said, but if it was that long ago (Was Twitter around ten years ago?) I really don't care.

It seems the cast feels the same way in this particular instance. Methinks Disney thought the cast would go with the Twitter flow and fall in line. They were wrong if they anticipated the cast reacting that way.

Very wrong. They've bungled this.

I just wish both sides would stop trying to bring up dirt on people. One thing if an actual crime was committed, another thing is digging for ugly things they said online on social media.

Disagree. He had a ton of tweets referencing pedophilia. Pictures are now coming out of him attending customs parties and guess what his theme was--pedophilia. He had shared videos with with Huston Huddleston who was arrested for child pornography.

There is just too much smoke around this guy for there not to be anything there. I don't give any sympathy to those who abuse children.

I don't either, and if there's actual proof? He should be arrested. But I'm not going to give credence to heresay.

I mean, it not exactly hearsay--its a pattern of behavior centering around a common theme.

No, it is heresay. Show me proof of anything done that breaks the law. Answer then I'll join the real outrage, rather than getting upset about what somebody says on Twitter.
