The insanity of this FO

What is the possibility that that 2nd round pick is going to make it more difficult to sign other players because his salary is so high, or that age will catch up to him before his contract is up?
Sign what other players? Most of our top guys are already signed or will be no problem. Lawrence was the last “concern” and it was dealt with. I just can’t see after dumping Dez how salary is an argument. So I say that possibility is slim to none.

As for age, he’s 29 and appears to be one of the guys whose physically gifted but also a workout warrior. Whatever his contract, it’ll effectively be for 3-4 years of expected production which I think is highly likely.

I think Cowboys like most teams have areas that need help but overall looking at this roster I see a lot of very good talent brought in by this organization. There clearly have been moves in the past that set this team back but in more recent times seeing the talent that they have brought in give me a lot of reasons for optimism and the future of this team. I'm not here to change the minds of the pessimist I can only speak for myself.

As for Earl Thomas I would love to have him but I don't want Dallas handing out top draft picks, they have offered up a 3rd, most I would go would be a 2nd and if that is not good enough then so be it. Where this team has gotten in trouble is making moves and selling the farm to do so.

Please show me the team in the NFL that has no questionable positions on their roster.

By the time you solve those positions, a ton of our players will have retired or moved on. Then, you'll have other areas to address.

This is a very complete roster in today's NFL if the QB is up to snuff. Thomas really establishes the defense as an elite group.
This team will never be finished rebuilding. We've been in rebuild mode ever since Garrett got here.

Indeed most loosing teams.
And yes it's not hard to predict if you bother looking at the evidance instead or relying on the hope of "next year".

Last year is last year, 20 years is 20 years, which in itself is a fallacy from the agenda crowds.
Can't change it, can only whine about it. And whining is detrimental.

So one must always look at what can be the upcoming year. es I know, this positive outlook can make you whine more. So go ahead.

Did anyone think after the mid to late 90's, this team would not have some down years. So it really has not been 20 years. Tuna gave some hope, then he left the team with one year left on his contract. Wade had some decent teams, but just not good enough. How many teams were in the same situation?

Now these past 8 years, yeah, has not been good except a few good years, Garrett seen to that. But this team is not devoid of talent. So there is a chance for all of us to look forward to.

Well except some will never see it that way.

so, whine away.

Yes, Ben's first Super Bowl was on his rookie contract, but that wasn't within the last 10 years I mentioned. I believe the second was after the rookie contract expired (rookie contracts are 4 years, right?). In any case, as you noted, the bulk of the winners have not been in their rookie contracts.

I believe so. His rookie contract was under the old CBA/rookie contract slider.
Basically, like you said, it has been Wilson and that's it.

Conventional wisdom in the NFL says the absolute best time to compete and win titles is with a good QB on a rookie contract. We have that. This year and next. This is the time to strike. Yet Jerry and son are content to with the status quo. Content to roll out scrubs at safety instead of spending the $. The money saved on Dez’s contract pays for Earl. Earl makes this defense a top 5 unit. Who cares that we give up a third. A third rounder is what got us Chaz Green. Spend the damn money.
And what happens when our "good QB on a rookie contract" goes down? I'll tell you. The rest doesn't mean squat!

This issue we've had is that we had Dak on a rookie deal, but with two years of the back end of the Romo deal hanging over us. So our overall QB spend for the position wasn't really all that low. Dak's cheap contract effectively bailed us out of what would have been a really tough spot if Romo couldn't go and we had to acquire and pay another vet.

Hat's off to the staff for getting a rookie 4th rounder ready the way they did with a player who'd never taken regular snaps under center before becoming a Cowboy.

But it's not that "simple", is it?

There's also the matter of what Thomas is actually looking for in terms of a contract. Unless we know what that amount is, it's impossible to truly say one way or another if this is a great idea or a bad one.

And that might be exactly why Seattle has no interest in extending him.

We will never know the amount until he signs somewhere. I think what’s been bandied about is likely generally correct and seemed affordable by this front office at draft time if we were willing to part with a third as has been reported. Clearly we wouldn’t have been in the discussion if it wasn’t deemed reasonable in the first place and I think we can all agree that this front office is not throwing out the huge cap killer contracts anymore.

I think Seattle has simply decided to turn the page on that era, i.e., legion of boom, and commit to youth.

I feel we are going to struggle in the passing game for a while while Dak gets used to these new guys and if we can actually look to the defense to possibly keep us in games, who knows?

I hope you're right, because if Thomas is looking for $13 million- plus a year, he can stay and rot in Seattle.

I think Seattle has simply decided to turn the page on that era, i.e., legion of boom, and commit to youth.

While I think they should , their stubbornness in holding onto Thomas flies against that. A rebuilding team should get what they can, trade the guy, and reap the $8 million in cap savings. And yet, here we are.

I feel we are going to struggle in the passing game for a while while Dak gets used to these new guys and if we can actually look to the defense to possibly keep us in games, who knows?

Despite not having Earl Thomas at safety, this starting defense has allowed zero points in three games thus far. Can't do better than that.

But, like you, I'm also concerned about the safety position. But I'm not willing to throw caution to the wind and get gouged by either the Seahawks or Earl Thomas either. Much the same way the Cowboys are playing this.

They won't take a 3rd for him! That is why we did not get him during the draft.

LOL some down years!!!
How many playoff games have we won since the last SB?
I expect a team with a QB the quality of Romo to at least be able to make a run at an SB but we only could win two playoff games and not in the same year either.
In the football sense we've been a joke for 20+ years whether you want to admit it or not and the same people still run the circus.
You keen hoping but don't hold your breath.

Such a loser's mentality. You are willing to stand pat with our roster instead of improving? No kidding one guy doesn't guarantee a Super Bowl but Earl puts us much closer than what we are rolling out right now.

Newsflash, no team who wins a Super Bowl is perfect at every single position.

No one called for "standing pat" , genius..................Learn to read and comprehend before shooting off your stupid mouth , Yosemite...............

Well technically he can be forced to play on that, and fined over and over for holding out. I don't think Dak would do that though, from the type of person he seems to be. Most teams don't force that on them if they are playing well though, since you don't want ill will from players, especially if they are your QB.

But if Dak performs like last year, then I see no reason to give him a deal.

I was speaking in the hypothetical that Dak has a good year...it would be insane for a team to battle their only QB over a contract, especially when he’s so undeniably underpaid.

But if Dak and the team repeat last year it’s going to be a real weird time in Dallas. No idea what we’d do with either the coach or the QB in that scenario. Or at least what Jerry would do...I know what I would do.
