The insanity of this FO

That's a different issue than this topic was about. In any case, the coaching staff wont have to get an offense full of 2nd teamers, 3rd teamers and practice squad players (and players who will be cut) ready to play in regular season games. My only real concern was how bad Rush looked.

If you can’t get your backups to at least look adequate against other teams backups, then you have no chance to get your starters in a position to win in the playoffs.

I think this FO is insane, but not overpaying for Earl is one of the things they're getting right.

"Overpay" is the most tired term in sports. There is no such thing as overpaying. You are worth what the highest bidder is willing to pay. Fans love using this term to convince themselves not to make a move.

But hey, if you are fine with the trash we are rolling out at safety because you don't want to "overpay", thats cool. Just don't expect any different results than any other year. They will get carved by any offense worth anything when it matters. Safety is extremely important position. So is DT. Dallas goes the cheap route on both and that is the main reason this defense has been bad for so long now.

Earl Thomas just turned 29 a few months ago. Not even close to being too old for a safety. He is still in his prime.

But hey, save that salary cap space so we can crown ourselves Salary Cap Champs!

If Dak playes well, they are going to give him a huge contract
If Zeke plays well, he is getting a big new deal
If Gregory plays well, watch them be stupid and ink him a new deal.
Lawrence will need a deal...

What are we going to do? Give a 30 year old player a 5yr $60mil contract, and a signing bonus? So we can go back to the land of no cap space?

If a safety is the difference between us making the playoffs and not making the playoffs, we are screwed to start with.

Finally, someone else who understands finance.

You mean a top 3 in the entire league at a position Dallas currently is fielding a 3 headed dumpster fire? Gotcha.

Earl Thomas is going to be top 3 in the entire league going forward, during that big extension he wants?

Funny how 30 other teams not named the Cowboys haven't jumped at that deal, either.

You’re saying it like Dak has no choice. He certainly does. It would be absolute insanity for Dak and his agent to let him play on a 1 year $700K deal next year. Very little chance it happens unless Dak is flat out bad, and in that case we will likely to be looking for a new franchise QB anyway

That is what I'm saying. That any new contract takes place after his rookie deal. I could be wrong.

I will say it, he is wrong. As much hate as Jerry gets he has 3 Superbowls and is in the hall of fame.

All based on one right decision. Ever since he blew that decision a few years later he has done nothing except make tons of money and bad decisions. We fans are left holding our empty wallets time and time again.

Honestly, I wonder if the plan here isn't actually to win a SB but rather just stay competitive year in and year out. That keeps the money flowing in at a fairly consistent level.

If they happen to get lucky and make a run, so be it. But I wonder if they just want to make sure they can consistently spit out 8-9 wins and minimize the downside instead of trying to win in a certain window.
If you really believe that I have some prime real estate in the Gulf of Mexico I'll sell you. The ignorance of our fans is infinite.

This fanbase cracks me up. Those Super Bowls were how long ago? They are ancient history. But like the cliche and stereotypical Cowboys fan, somehow the mid 90s always gets brought back up to try and make a point. What has Jerry done the last 2 decades? Some of us want to see results in the dvd era. You are welcome to go pop in those VHS tapes and watch us win Super Bowls in the early and mid 90s. But Jerry has been a god awful GM/owner since those. Terrible GM because he has no business being one at all. Terrible owner because he won't fire the GM (himself) even though he has admitted that he should have been fired as a GM a long time ago if the situation was normal. But we don't have a normal situation. Our owner is our GM so huge conflict of interest.

For the record, this defense - despite the "dumpster fire" - has given up exactly zero points thus far in the preseason. An "inconvenient truth" to be sure for those trying to claim that this is some awful defense if they don't give up the farm for Earl Thomas. But the truth all the same.

Well you can say that about most teams, and be right. It's not like it is a Nostradamus type vision.
Indeed most loosing teams.
And yes it's not hard to predict if you bother looking at the evidance instead of relying on the hope of "next year".

The Cardinals were playing starters, just as we were playing starters on defense (except Lee). Our defense looked very good. It was only the scrub loaded offense and punt return game that let us down. Lance Lenoir's punt return flubs were responsible for a lot of AZ's points. Realistically, 8 turnovers is a fluke.

Earl Thomas alone doesn't guarantee us a Super Bowl......................I still have questions about this receiver group and the tight end position...........
Please show me the team in the NFL that has no questionable positions on their roster.

By the time you solve those positions, a ton of our players will have retired or moved on. Then, you'll have other areas to address.

This is a very complete roster in today's NFL if the QB is up to snuff. Thomas really establishes the defense as an elite group.
